Book Cleopatra of Egypt Antiquity s Queen of Romance

Download or read book Cleopatra of Egypt Antiquity s Queen of Romance written by Philip W. Sergeant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cleopatra of Egypt, Antiquity's Queen of Romance The present book may be described as an experiment. I wished to ascertain whether one of the great women rulers of antiquity could not be made as interesting to the general reader as I some of the queens and empresses of more recent times would appear to be, if I may judge by the reception given to their biographies in this country and elsewhere. Among the women of old none seemed a more promising subject than Cleopatra the Great; for, while she is a character of world-wide celebrity and therefore requires no introduction to the most exclusive of readers, she has hitherto been treated almost always as though she were a follower in the train of two of the great personages in Roman history instead of meriting to be considered by herself. Cleopatra appeared to me undoubtedly to furnish a worthy subject for a biography, if sufficient material could be got together to render her life intelligible. One great disadvantage in writing of the Egyptian Queen, as compared with the Empress Josephine, for instance, lies in the absence in ancient days of the host of memoirists, brilliant or otherwise, but always somehow valuable, who make vivid the stories of modern heroes and heroines. Book excerpt: Queen Cleopatra is a historical drama by Talbot Mundy. It depicts the biggest clash of the sexes known to history, that of Cleopatra and Julius Caesar. Excerpt: "Cleopatra yawned. The rising sun, with a hint in its hue of the heat it had left behind in Asia, began brightening the gilt and marble coloring of the harbor water, streaking it with silver, making spots of gorgeous color where the seaweed and the scum and flotsam drifted. Through the windows, the masts of a hundred ships appeared like pen-strokes in the haze. Three crows came and perched on the marble balcony rail, alert and impudent, as Cleopatra jumped from her bed and came out under the awning, stretching herself."

Book Cleopatra

Download or read book Cleopatra written by Joyce Tyldesley and published by Profile Books. This book was released on 2011-05-26 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She was the last ruler of the Macedonian dynasty of Ptolemies who had ruled Egypt for three centuries. Highly educated (she was the only one of the Ptolemies to read and speak ancient Egyptian as well as the court Greek) and very clever (her famous liaisons with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony were as much to do with politics as the heart), she steered her kingdom through impossibly taxing internal problems and railed against greedy Roman imperialism. Stripping away preconceptions as old as her Roman enemies, Joyce Tyldesley uses all her skills as an Egyptologist to give us this magnificent biography.

Book excerpt: This historical romance is about Egypt's last ruler, Cleopatra's life, desires, and love. None of the beautiful women of history has given the world such legends of her seductive charms as Cleopatra. She was the one who turned Rome's destiny and that of the world upside down because of her magnificence. Julius Caesar, whose corps crushed the conquered world from Canopus to the Thames, yielded to her, and Mark Antony threw away an empire and his honor to follow her to his destruction. At last, she took her own life by allowing an Egyptian Cobra to bite her. She took this bold step to avoid the dishonor of being paraded as a captive in a Roman triumph celebrating the victory of Octavian. It is a sensual and intellectual work that presents a beautiful and vivid picture of the time. German Egyptologist and novelist wrote it with a masterful eye for detail and archeological sense of historical accuracy. It gives a good glimpse into the lives of the people around Cleopatra.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An air of mystcry surrounds Cleopatra. A record of her reign as queen of Egypt simply doesn't exist and we must piece together her story from fragments, artifacts, and historical writings. Was she a selfish, extravagant, and overly ambitious tyrant? Or was she a patriotic advocate for her people with the courage to stand up to those who held power in Rome? Cleopatra spent her reign fighting for her right to rule and struggling to maintain Egypt's independence. Love, power, and political advantage became intertwined as Cleopatra aligned herself with the dominant political figures of her time. These partnerships both helped and hurt her beloved Egypt. So who was Cleopatra? Her motives may be open to debate, but it cannot be denied that she was a savvy political mastermind, a powerful queen, and a force to be reckoned with - in any age. Though it is a short text for a topic that has intrigued historians and lay-people alike for centuries, the book manages to give a succinct yet thorough and easy-to-understand overview of Cleopatra, the historical figures that surrounded her such as Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, as well as her reign in power and, ultimately, her demise.

Book excerpt: THE story of Cleopatra is a story of crime. It is a narrative of the course and the consequences of unlawful love. In her strange and romantic history we see this passion portrayed with the most complete and graphic fidelity in all its influences and effects; its uncontrollable impulses, its intoxicating joys, its reckless and mad career, and the dreadful remorse and ultimate despair and ruin in which it always and inevitably ends.Cleopatra was by birth an Egyptian; by ancestry and descent she was a Greek. Thus, while Alexandria and the delta of the Nile formed the scene of the most important events and incidents of her history, it was the blood of Macedon which flowed in her veins. Her character and action are marked by the genius, the courage, the originality, and the impulsiveness pertaining to the stock from which she sprung. The events of her history, on the other hand, and the peculiar character of her adventures, her sufferings, and her sins, were determined by the circumstances with which she was surrounded, and the influences which were brought to bear upon her in the soft and voluptuous clime where the scenes of her early life were laid.Egypt has always been considered as physically the most remarkable country on the globe. It is a long and narrow valley of verdure and fruitfulness, completely insulated from the rest of the habitable world. It is more completely insulated, in fact, than any literal island could be, inasmuch as deserts are more impassable than seas. The very existence of Egypt is a most extraordinary phenomenon. If we could but soar with the wings of an eagle into the air, and look down upon the scene, so as to observe the operation of that grand and yet simple process by which this long and wonderful valley, teeming so profusely with animal and vegetable life, has been formed, and is annually revivified and renewed, in the midst of surrounding wastes of silence, desolation, and death, we should gaze upon it with never-ceasing admiration and pleasure. We have not the wings of the eagle, but the generalizations of science furnish us with a sort of substitute for them.

Book excerpt: An epic tale of romance and adventure by the author of "King Solomon's Mines" and "She." In ancient Egypt, the royal line of the pharaohs had been driven from their throne by the Persians, who were routed in turn by the Greeks. Harmachis, the last descendant of the royal Egyptian dynasty, vowed to regain his kingdom and drive the foreign queen Cleopatra from the country. But he had not reckoned on the bewitching beauty of Cleopatra. For Harmachis, all the great kingdom of Egypt and the treasure within were not equal in worth to the queen's love. Originally published in 1889, "Cleopatra" was turned into a spectacular silent movie in 1917. A comic book version was published in 1961.
