Book Clearing Hurdles

Download or read book Clearing Hurdles written by Dan O'Brien and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only one man, the Olympic Gold Medalist in the decathlon, is officially deemed the World's Greatest Athlete. As an orphan who has never met his biological parents, as a recovering alcoholic, as the subject of a timelessly infamous advertising campaign, as the athlete of maybe the most publicised and shocking failure in the history of sports, and as a man who persevered through it all to dominate his sport like few athletes ever have, it is no wonder Track & Field News calls Dan's life, the stuff movies are made of. Dan's meteoric rise to prominence saw him take the No.1 world ranking less than two years removed from his only college season, and he became an overnight celebrity when cast alongside Dave Johnson in Reebok's massive Dan & Dave ad campaign. The commercials debuted during the Super Bowl, but when O'Brien infamously failed to qualify for the Olympic team it was called the most shocking moment in U.S. Olympic history, and to this day ESPN ranks it as one of the all-time sports busts. Undeterred, O'Brien went on to capture his record-tying fifth national championship in addition to a third consecutive world championship the first decathlete in history to do so. Then at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, with what seemed like an entire country in his corner, O'Brien completed his tale of redemption by becoming the oldest decathlete to ever win an Olympic gold medal. Now, through the pages of this profoundly inspiring and fast-paced memoir, Dan will chronicle his extraordinary career. This book also offers a window into the world of the decathlon and an inside look at some of its most influential athletes. O'Brien offers an insiders view of some of the greatest Olympic decathletes -- of Bill Toomey the intellectual artist, Milt Campbell the most inspirational, and Bruce Jenner as the man most driven.

Book excerpt: When life takes a tragic turn . . . don't give up. Like most mothers, Jordan Lawrence's mom knew her first born was special from the moment he exited her womb and entered the race of life. His big brown eyes and day-one smile greeted everyone in the delivery room. Jordan was ready to take on the world. Then five months later, the unimaginable happened: two cars collided, and Jordan was in one of them. Suddenly, his bright future grew incredibly dim. Doctors didn't expect Jordan to survive his injuries, but God had a different plan. Jordan was still in the race, and so far from finished. Clearing the Hurdles: Facing Life's Obstacles with Determination to Overcome and Win [or Clearing the Hurdles: Facing Life's Obstacles with Determination to Win the Race] is Jordan's story of overcoming the looming obstacles on his long road toward recovery. Borrowing metaphors from his track-and-field days, Jordan shares how he has defied just about every "he'll never" declaration and shattered records along the way. He stresses the importance of starting well, being stretched, staying in your lane, and never giving up-especially after a setback. Jordan's personal story of tragedy and triumph will inspire you to face whatever obstacles you encounter in your race of life with faith, courage, and perseverance. After reading this book, you will discover that you have what it takes to overcome and clear every hurdle.

Book excerpt: Originally I had planned on naming this book "Ninety Days to Glory." By revelation of the Holy Spirit I was told to name the book "Speak Plainly God" as God would use my book to answer the cry of many to learn how to hear Him speak plainly in their daily lives. The greatest miracle I personally received was at the end of my own ninety-day transformation. A miracle occurred in heaven that was shared by others as a witness to God's commitment and love for those who overcome the obstacles of this world. Jesus appeared to me in the form of the Morning Star. The events that followed have led to the writing of this book. If you seek Him with an open mind and heart, He has promised through scripture to appear to you as well. II Peter 1:19, 21 Verse 19: And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and The Morning Star rises in your hearts. Verse 21: For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. Revelation 22:16 Verse 16: I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David and the Bright Morning Star. Revelations 2:26, 28 Verse 26: To him who overcomes and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations. Verse 28: I WILL ALSO GIVE HIM THE MORNING STAR.

Book A Seat at the Table

Download or read book A Seat at the Table written by Kelly Dittmar and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presence of women in Congress is at an all-time high -- approximately one of every five members is female -- and record numbers of women are running for public office for the 2018 midterms. At the same time, Congress is more polarized than ever, and little research exists on how women in Congress view their experiences and contributions to American politics today. Drawing on personal interviews with over three-quarters of the women serving in the 114th Congress (2015-17), the authors analyze how these women navigate today's stark partisan divisions, and whether they feel effective in their jobs. Through first-person perspectives, A Seat at the Table looks at what motivates these women's legislative priorities and behavior, details the ways in which women experience service within a male-dominated institution, and highlights why it matters that women sit in the nation's federal legislative chambers. It describes the strategies women employ to overcome any challenges they confront as well as the opportunities available to them. The book examines how gender interacts with political party, race and ethnicity, seniority, chamber, and district characteristics to shape women's representational influence and behavior, finding that party and race/ethnicity are the two most complicating factors to a singular narrative of women's congressional representation. While congresswomen's perspectives, experiences, and influence are neither uniform nor interchangeable, they strongly believe their presence matters in myriad ways, affecting congressional culture, priorities, processes, debates, and outcomes.

Book Behavioral Risk Management

Download or read book Behavioral Risk Management written by Hersh Shefrin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The psychological dimension of managing risk is of crucial importance, and its study has led to the identification of specific do's and don'ts. Those with an understanding of the psychology underlying risk and the skills to recognize its manifestation in practice, have the opportunity to develop frameworks that embody the do's and don'ts, thereby producing sound judgments and good decisions. Those lacking the understanding and the skills are destined to be more hit and miss in their approach to risk management, doing the don'ts and not doing the do's. Virtually every major risk management catastrophe in the last fifteen years has psychological pitfalls at its root. The list of catastrophes includes the 2008 bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers and subsequent global financial crisis, the 2010 explosion at BP's Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico and the 2011 nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant. A critical lesson from psychological studies for those involved in risk management is that people's judgments and decisions about risk vary with type of circumstance. In Behavioral Risk Management readers will learn that there are specific actions that organizations can undertake to incorporate understanding, recognition, and behavioral interventions into the practice of risk management. There are many examples throughout the book that illustrate doing the don'ts. The chapters in the first part of the book introduce the main ideas, and the chapters in the latter part provide insight into how to apply those ideas to the practical world in which risk managers operate.

Book excerpt: Bad Girlfriend What were the characteristics of a good girlfriend? Everything that wasn’t her. Tammy wasn’t good with mush, couldn’t stand watching romantic movies without wanting to hurl. She didn’t have songs with her significant others. Hell, she didn’t have significant others. So when Fletcher needed a fake girlfriend to take to a wedding—one who wouldn’t get attached like all the other women who fell in love with him at the drop of a hat—she was the obvious choice. She went, and everything was great. Until Fletcher fell for her. Until…she fell for him right back. Bad Best Friend Six overprotective older brothers. One hopelessly single younger sister. She loved her brothers, but, hell, they were ANNOYING. And good at scaring off every single man she’d ever dated. Cora just wanted the happy ending, the man would love her and her flaws. The one who wouldn’t be scared off by her six scary brothers. But that man didn’t appear to exist. Until one day there was a knock at the door. And Rafe showed up, moved in, and— Proved that her brothers’ best friend was the only man on the planet who wasn’t scared. Bad Rebound She was gorgeous…and infuriating. And he couldn’t stop thinking about her. Jeremy was used to taking care of people. His brothers, his sister, his mom. Hell, he’d been the “man” of his family for so long that the need to care of others was burned onto his soul. But Teresa didn’t want to be taken care of, and worse, she didn’t need it. Until…she did. Until she needed him. Jer knew that his chance with her wasn’t going to come more than once, so he had to be smart. She needed to fall for him. Irrevocably. Because he couldn’t end up a bad rebound.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spirit Sets Free reflects on the Spirit setting free from within as a basis for the spontaneous enthusiasm of hope and joy, expressed in general liveliness, music and dance. This poses the challenge of laying the foundation of moral integrity as the second stage of African renaissance. The commitment to this challenge of moral integrity makes African spirituality a prophetic spirituality in the service of universal hope and joy. These cultural and spiritual missions involve both opportunity and responsibility with wide-ranging implications for individuals and groups of peoples of African heritage. The reflections suggest how individuals or peoples of African heritage could convert this challenge of moral rebirth into the opportunity for true freedom from within, as basis of hope and joy.

Book Global Financial Stability Report April 2021

Download or read book Global Financial Stability Report April 2021 written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extraordinary policy measures have eased financial conditions and supported the economy, helping to contain financial stability risks. Chapter 1 warns that there is a pressing need to act to avoid a legacy of vulnerabilities while avoiding a broad tightening of financial conditions. Actions taken during the pandemic may have unintended consequences such as stretched valuations and rising financial vulnerabilities. The recovery is also expected to be asynchronous and divergent between advanced and emerging market economies. Given large external financing needs, several emerging markets face challenges, especially if a persistent rise in US rates brings about a repricing of risk and tighter financial conditions. The corporate sector in many countries is emerging from the pandemic overindebted, with notable differences depending on firm size and sector. Concerns about the credit quality of hard-hit borrowers and profitability are likely to weigh on the risk appetite of banks. Chapter 2 studies leverage in the nonfinancial private sector before and during the COVID-19 crisis, pointing out that policymakers face a trade-off between boosting growth in the short term by facilitating an easing of financial conditions and containing future downside risks. This trade-off may be amplified by the existing high and rapidly building leverage, increasing downside risks to future growth. The appropriate timing for deployment of macroprudential tools should be country-specific, depending on the pace of recovery, vulnerabilities, and policy tools available. Chapter 3 turns to the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the commercial real estate sector. While there is little evidence of large price misalignments at the onset of the pandemic, signs of overvaluation have now emerged in some economies. Misalignments in commercial real estate prices, especially if they interact with other vulnerabilities, increase downside risks to future growth due to the possibility of sharp price corrections.
