Book excerpt: "In poems that shuttle between Singapore and Australia, award-winning poet Boey Kim Cheng seeks to establish a new sense of self and home on the shifting ground between memory and imagination. A noodle-maker in Melbourne triggers connective threads to the poet's birthplace. A train crossing over the Johor-Singapore Causeway evokes the dislocating experience of interstitial existence. After six long years, one of Singapore's greatest modern voices returns with a work of profound insight and erudition." --cover page [4].

Book excerpt: ?The language of light? was written by Antonio Petrillo, who dedicated the last years of his short life to its drafting. Antonio was a friend of mine and a teacher and I applied his teachings about light and lighting of artworks during many years of my career. I had long promised to dear Luisa, Antonio's wife, to publish his unreleased work but I never found the time and serenity to handle it due my work and teaching. I do it now, taking advantage also of the skill and availability of Roberta Todisco, who oversaw the research of images and the book's graphics. It's left to me to try to recreate the writing style of his work, given that it would be impossible to re-propose an updated version without Antonio's advices, suggestions and affection that He always has given to me undeservedly. Book Tilopa s Mahamudra Upadesha

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sangyes Nyenpa Rinpoche
  • Publisher : Shambhala Publications
  • Release : 2014-04-15
  • ISBN : 0834829746
  • Pages : 263 pages

Download or read book Tilopa s Mahamudra Upadesha written by Sangyes Nyenpa Rinpoche and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All lineages of Mahamudra meditation have their source in a verse teaching—a "song of realization"—sung by the Mahasiddha Tilopa to his disciple Naropa on the banks of the Ganges River more than a thousand years ago. Since that time, the meaning of Tilopa’s instructions has been passed directly from master to disciple in a continuous stream that exists unbroken to this day. This book offers the reader a rare glimpse into the Mahamudra oral transmission, given in a traditional Tibetan context by one of the lineage’s most learned and accomplished contemporary masters. Mahamudra meditation, while highly advanced, is yet simple, practical, and accessible for anyone, because what is identified and meditated upon is the very nature of one’s own mind. In Sangyes Nyenpa Rinpoche’s words, "The distinction between deception and liberation lies in whether we understand the ever-present nature of our own mind or not. Knowing our own face is liberation; not knowing our own face is samsara. This is not something far distant from us." The instructions are ideal for Westerners because the root text is manageable and Rinpoche has provided an outline of his own composition that makes it easily understandable. He explains terminology with frequent comparisons between Dzogchen and Mahamudra, quotes prolifically from scripture, gives clear examples, and generally cajoles, admonishes, and encourages his listeners to be true to their own spiritual path.

Download or read book The Varnish and the Glaze written by Marjolijn Bol and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2023-05-03 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Both medieval panel painters and those working in the fifteenth century created works that evoke the glow of precious stones, the sheen of polished gold and silver, and the colorful radiance of stained glass. Yet their approach to rendering these materials is markedly different. Marjolijn Bol explores some of the reasons behind this radical transformation by telling the history of the two oil painting techniques used to depict everything that glistens and glows-the varnish and the glaze. For more than a century after his death, the fifteenth century painter Jan van Eyck was widely credited with the invention of varnish and oil paint, on account of his unique visual realism. This was a myth, however, and after it was revealed as such, the remarkable verisimilitude of his work was attributed instead to a new translucent painting technique, a technique the artist could have only innovated with oil paint already at his disposal: the glaze. Today, most theories about how Van Eyck achieved his visual realism revolve around this idea: that he was the first to discover or refine the glazing technique. Bol, however, argues that, rather than being a fifteenth-century refinement, varnishing and glazing began centuries before and, moreover, that these two techniques were not only explored by painters but were developed by a variety of artisans as part of the medieval material culture of splendor. Artisans embellished metalwork and wood with varnishes and glazes to imitate gems and enamel; infused rock crystal with oil, resin, and colorants to imitate more precious minerals; and oiled parchment to transform it into the appearance of green glass. Likewise, medieval panel painters used varnishes and glazes to create the look of water, silk, and more. What's more, Bol shows how the explorations of materials and their optical properties by these artists stimulated natural philosophers to come up with theories about transparent and translucent materials produced by nature"--
