Book excerpt: I like things clean. But I don't really like cleaning. I notice that our family runs more smoothly when there is order and stability in our home. The kids are better behaved when their living space is organized and they know where their things belong. I love being able to spontaneously invite friends over without fear of dirty dishes crowding the kitchen sink, wet towels on the bathroom floor, or messy unmade beds. I like being able to shrug when the kids lick crumbs from the floor (will the playing-cat-game ever get old?). I like that we can plan outings on the weekend rather than spend valuable free time cleaning up after a way-too-busy week. I like that the laundry is manageable and not overwhelming. But I still don't like cleaning. Instead, I prefer to do a little bit every day (or have someone else do it!) so I never spend a whole entire day inside cleaning when I could be outside having fun! I have chosen to Clean Less and Play More. Stephanie O'Dea is a New York Times best selling author of 10 books and Slow Living expert. I was in a hotel room, when a maid came in and sprayed a solution on every surface...and then left. Right when I thought she'd forgotten, she returned. She wiped for less than two minutes with a thin dry cloth, and the whole place sparkled. It had, frankly, never occurred to me to let one solution do all the work, so I asked her what she'd used. It was something called Butcher's Bath Mate-an industry standby. Pro cleaners have brilliant tricks to get the job done. So, I write this book to tell you about this!

Download or read book Clean written by James Hamblin and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named a Best Book of 2020 by NPR and Vanity Fair One of Smithsonian's Ten Best Science Books of 2020 “A searching and vital explication of germ theory, social norms, and what the modern era is really doing to our bodies and our psyches.” —Vanity Fair A preventative medicine physician and staff writer for The Atlantic explains the surprising and unintended effects of our hygiene practices in this informative and entertaining introduction to the new science of skin microbes and probiotics. Keeping skin healthy is a booming industry, and yet it seems like almost no one agrees on what actually works. Confusing messages from health authorities and ineffective treatments have left many people desperate for reliable solutions. An enormous alternative industry is filling the void, selling products that are often of questionable safety and totally unknown effectiveness. In Clean, doctor and journalist James Hamblin explores how we got here, examining the science and culture of how we care for our skin today. He talks to dermatologists, microbiologists, allergists, immunologists, aestheticians, bar-soap enthusiasts, venture capitalists, Amish people, theologians, and straight-up scam artists, trying to figure out what it really means to be clean. He even experiments with giving up showers entirely, and discovers that he is not alone. Along the way, he realizes that most of our standards of cleanliness are less related to health than most people think. A major part of the picture has been missing: a little-known ecosystem known as the skin microbiome—the trillions of microbes that live on our skin and in our pores. These microbes are not dangerous; they’re more like an outer layer of skin that no one knew we had, and they influence everything from acne, eczema, and dry skin, to how we smell. The new goal of skin care will be to cultivate a healthy biome—and to embrace the meaning of “clean” in the natural sense. This can mean doing much less, saving time, money, energy, water, and plastic bottles in the process. Lucid, accessible, and deeply researched, Clean explores the ongoing, radical change in the way we think about our skin, introducing readers to the emerging science that will be at the forefront of health and wellness conversations in coming years.

Book The More of Less

Book excerpt: Don’t Settle for More Most of us know we own too much stuff. We feel the weight and burden of our clutter, and we tire of cleaning and managing and organizing. While excess consumption leads to bigger houses, faster cars, fancier technology, and cluttered homes, it never brings happiness. Rather, it results in a desire for more. It redirects our greatest passions to things that can never fulfill. And it distracts us from the very life we wish we were living. Live a better life with less. In The More of Less, Joshua Becker helps you... • Recognize the life-giving benefits of owning less • Realize how all the stuff you own is keeping you from pursuing your dreams • Craft a personal, practical approach to decluttering your home and life • Experience the joys of generosity • Learn why the best part of minimalism isn’t a clean house, it’s a full life The beauty of minimalism isn’t in what it takes away. It’s in what it gives. Make Room in Your Life for What You Really Want “Maybe you don’t need to own all this stuff.” After a casual conversation with his neighbor on Memorial Day 2008, Joshua Becker realized he needed a change. He was spending far too much time organizing possessions, cleaning up messes, and looking for more to buy. So Joshua and his wife decided to remove the nonessential possessions from their home and life. Eventually, they sold, donated, or discarded over 60 percent of what they owned. In exchange, they found a life of more freedom, more contentment, more generosity, and more opportunity to pursue the things that mattered most. The More of Less delivers an empowering plan for living more by owning less. With practical suggestions and encouragement to personalize your own minimalist style, Joshua Becker shows you why minimizing possessions is the best way to maximize life. Are you ready for less cleaning, less anxiety, and less stress in your life? Simplicity isn’t as complicated as you think.

Book How to Keep House While Drowning

Download or read book How to Keep House While Drowning written by KC Davis and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-04-26 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you're tired of staring at the same mess every day, but struggling to find the time and willpower to clean it, you probably have a very good reason: anxiety, fatigue, depression, ADHD, or lack of support. Designed by therapist KC Davis, this revolutionary method of cleaning and organizing helps end the stress-mess cycle. After KC Davis gave birth to her second child, she didn't fold a single piece of laundry for seven months. Between postpartum depression and ADHD, she felt numb and overwhelmed. She regained her sanity--and the functionality of her home--after one life-changing realization: You don't work for your home; your home works for you. In other words, messiness is not a moral failing. A new sense of calm washed over her as she let go of the shame-based messaging that interpreted a pile of dirty laundry as "I can never keep up" and a chaotic kitchen as "I'm a bad mother." Instead, she looked at unwashed clothes and thought, "I am alive," and at stacks of dishes and thought, "I cooked my family dinner three nights in a row." Building on this foundation of self-compassion, KC devised the powerful practical approach that has exploded in popularity through her TikTok account, @domesticblisters. The secret is to stop following perfectionist rules that don't make sense for you--like folding clothes that don't wrinkle anyway, or thinking that every room has to be clean at the same time--and to find creative solutions that accommodate your needs, pet peeves, daily rhythms, and attention span. Inside, you'll learn exactly how to customize your approach and rebuild your relationship with your home, including: -How to stop seeing care tasks as a reflection of your worth, but rather as kindnesses to your future self -How to use calming rituals to keep you from feeling overwhelmed when you look at a big mess -How to stagger tasks that are easy to procrastinate throughout the week and month -How to quickly transform a room from messy to fully functional through the "5 Things" tidying method, and other shortcuts requiring minimal energy Read this book to make home feel like a sanctuary again: where you can move with ease, where guilt, self-criticism, and endless checklists have no place, and where you always have permission to rest, even when things aren't finished.

Download or read book Still Learning written by Allison Rodman and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2023-11-13 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thoughtful guide offers a framework for creating and sustaining learning organizations where both students and educators can truly thrive. For years, schools have worked to ensure that students develop their social-emotional learning skills, which research shows can benefit not only students' well-being, but also their academic achievement. Until now, however, developing these skills in adults has not received the same emphasis in schools, despite evidence that they are just as helpful for advancing professional practice. With Still Learning: Strengthening Professional and Organizational Capacity, educator and author Allison Rodman, founder of the Learning Loop, seeks to correct this oversight so that teachers, administrators, and other school leaders can thrive both individually and collectively. Rodman offers a comprehensive "Framework for Educator Capacity Building" that sequences, defines, and outlines key concepts and strategies in five disciplines: attunement, alignment, perspective, collective efficacy, and organizational learning. In this essential resource, you'll find * Protocols, checklists, reflection exercises, and myriad other practical tools for supporting educators' social-emotional development and strengthening professional and organizational capacity. * Data and examples from decades of research into the benefits of and best practices related to capacity building. * Lessons and insights from real-life educators. * Recommended resources for further exploration. You'll also be able to access editable PDF versions of many of the tools and resources within the book to support and enhance your reflection, learning, and action planning. The evidence is clear: Social-emotional development is a must not just for students, but for educators, organizations, and systems as well. Still Learning has everything you need to ensure that the adults in your school or district implement and sustain healthy practices to benefit themselves, their colleagues, and their students.
