Book excerpt: Claymont, Delaware, located strategically along the Delaware River, the Kings Highway, and the railroad, is a singular small town that, in many ways, has mirrored America's growth from the 1600s to the 1960s. Though an important thoroughfare between Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. since colonial times, the essence of the Claymont community has always been determined by the vision of the steadfast people who, for centuries, have made it their home. Within these pages, readers will discover the Claymont of yesteryear, visiting the inns and taverns that sprang up to serve the needs of early travelers, the homes of such famous residents as artists Adolph Wertmueller and F.O.C. Darley, and the summer retreats of Wilmington and Philadelphia's elite families. Readers will delight in views of the early farmhouses along the Post Road, the Delaware River's "gold coast" of the 1890s, the seaplane training facility of World War I, the old-fashioned meat counter at the A&P, and the Green Lantern Theatre. Schools and churches, neighborhoods and thoroughfares, businesses and memorable events, all captured and preserved by early photographers, make this entertaining trip down memory lane a must for Claymont residents, both past and present.

Book Classical Spirituality in Contemporary America

Download or read book Classical Spirituality in Contemporary America written by Michael S. Pittman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-08 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: G.I. Gurdjieff (d. 1949) remains an important, if controversial, figure in early 20th-century Western Esoteric thought. Born in the culturally diverse region of the Caucasus, Gurdjieff traveled in Asia, Africa, and elsewhere in search of practical spiritual knowledge. Though oftentimes allusive, references to Sufi teachings and characters take a prominent position in Gurdjieff's work and writings. Since his death, a discourse on Gurdjieff and Sufism has developed through the contributions as well as critiques of his students and interlocutors. J.G. Bennett began an experimental 'Fourth Way' school in England in the 1970s which included the introduction of Sufi practices and teachings. In America this discourse has further expanded through the collaboration and engagement of contemporary Sufi teachers. This work does not simply demonstrate the influence of Gurdjieff and his ideas, but approaches the specific discourse on and about Gurdjieff and Sufism in the context of contemporary religious and spiritual teachings, particularly in the United States, and highlights some of the adaptive, boundary-crossing, and hybrid features that have led to the continuing influence of Sufism.

Book excerpt: Crossroads: The Louis Lugo Story is the true account of a young kid raised on the streets of New York’s projects—the gangs and a lifestyle of crime would be his mentors into manhood. Follow Louis as he learns to be a hustler, a pusher, and evolves into a man to be afraid of. You will experience this gangster’s struggles every step of the way as he gambles with his life for his piece of the American dream. Serving serious time for serious crimes will be the debt he will have to pay. Yet through it all, Louis knew there were some lines he would not and could not cross. God watched as Louis hit rock bottom and waited patiently for Louis to open his heart to Him. Through the support and encouragement of his wife and his love for his children, Louis applied the skills he learned on the streets to his work as a mentor to those who are still where he once was.

Book The Great Paleolithic War

  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press

  • ISBN : 022629336X
  • Pages : 691 pages

Download or read book The Great Paleolithic War written by David J. Meltzer and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-11-03 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the discovery in Europe in the late 1850s that humanity had roots predating known history and reaching deep into the Pleistocene era, scientists wondered whether North American prehistory might be just as ancient. And why not? The geological strata seemed exactly analogous between America and Europe, which would lead one to believe that North American humanity ought to be as old as the European variety. This idea set off an eager race for evidence of the people who might have occupied North America during the Ice Age—a long, and, as it turned out, bitter and controversial search. In The Great Paleolithic War, David J. Meltzer tells the story of a scientific quest that set off one of the longest-running feuds in the history of American anthropology, one so vicious at times that anthropologists were deliberately frightened away from investigating potential sites. Through his book, we come to understand how and why this controversy developed and stubbornly persisted for as long as it did; and how, in the process, it revolutionized American archaeology.
