Download or read book Clay Mineralogy of Recent Marine Sediments in the Gulf of Mexico written by Jürg Walter Meyer and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation is intended to be a contribution to the study of Recent marine sediments. The review of previous work will indicate that little is known about such deposits. A study of Recent marine sediments was therefore considered to be of great interest because many questions pertinent to sedimentation, diagenesis and oil formation can only be answered, if more is known about Recent deposits. Since most studies have been restricted to shelf areas and all other studies of marine deposits have been from widely separated localities, the Gulf of Mexico has been chosen as a promising area for study. The cores used in this study were made available by the Lamont Geological Observatory, which has a tremendous collection of cores. Since most Recent marine sediments consist of fine grained clay material and since the clay minerals, among all crystalline phases, would be the first ones to show any chemical reactions with their new environment (diagenetic changes), an investigation of the clay fraction was thought to be very interesting. This would include a study of the clay mineral composition of various size fractions, which might give a clue about the origin of some components due to their occurrence in definite size fractions. It was thought that diagenetic changes would be detected most easily if a long, single core was carefully sampled and studied. Also any sudden changes in the mineralogical composition would indicate a difference in source area, which would be of paleogeographic interest. In addition it was preferred to study surface samples which might reveal the reaction of clay minerals to the present environments or outline various regions influenced by several rivers, each having a different source area.

Download or read book Foundation Engineering Handbook written by Hsai-Yang Fang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 935 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than ten years have passed since the first edition was published. During that period there have been a substantial number of changes in geotechnical engineering, especially in the applications of foundation engineering. As the world population increases, more land is needed and many soil deposits previously deemed unsuitable for residential housing or other construction projects are now being used. Such areas include problematic soil regions, mining subsidence areas, and sanitary landfills. To overcome the problems associated with these natural or man-made soil deposits, new and improved methods of analysis, design, and implementation are needed in foundation construction. As society develops and living standards rise, tall buildings, transportation facilities, and industrial complexes are increasingly being built. Because of the heavy design loads and the complicated environments, the traditional design concepts, construction materials, methods, and equipment also need improvement. Further, recent energy and material shortages have caused additional burdens on the engineering profession and brought about the need to seek alternative or cost-saving methods for foundation design and construction.

Download or read book Petroleum Science and Technology written by Muhammad Abdul Quddus and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-04-02 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Petroleum Science and Technology: Petroleum Generation, Accumulation and Prospecting describes natural hydrocarbon geology along with applicable aspects of physics, chemistry, biology, environmental science, mathematics, and engineering/technology. It starts off with a brief coverage of the origin and evolution of the universe, petroleum origin and generation in subsurface condition, source rock, oil/gas migration path and reservoir rock. Geological, geophysical, and geochemical petroleum surveys are also included. This book covers both theory and applied information. Aimed at graduate students, researchers, and professionals in petroleum engineering and chemical engineering, it: Covers petroleum geology and technology including petroleum generation, migration, and reservoir formation Introduces the nature and formation of petroleum and its exploration Describes oil/gas prospecting using geophysico-chemical methods under subsurface condition Includes a detailed geochemical survey along with an analysis of kerogen and bitumen Explains petroleum migration and accumulation using two-dimensional graphs MA Quddus PhD, has served in the petroleum sector and R&D organization, both national and multinational, for more than 40 years and has worked in various capacities including in the laboratory, office, field, and plant, and has also engaged in teaching petroleum technology as a visiting professor for 17 years. He earned BSc (Hons) and MSc degrees along with a PhD with thesis titled "Oxidation of Asphalt." As a result of his constant research, he has published nine international and 12 national papers, obtained one patent, presented five papers in conferences and prepared six technical reports. He has also visited the USA, Canada, and Indonesia for short courses in petroleum technology and teacher training.
Download or read book Sedimentary Basins written by Gerhard Einsele and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 845 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern geological sciences are characterized by extraordinarily rapid progress, as well as by the development and application of numerous new and refined methods, most of them handling an enormous amount of data available from all the continents and oceans. Given this state of affairs, it seams inevitable that many students and professionals tend to become experts in relatively narrow fields and there by are in danger of losing a broad view of current knowledge. The abun dance of new books and symposium volumes testifies to this trend toward specialization. However, many geologic processes are complex and result from the interaction of many, seemingly unrelated, individual factors. This signifies that we still need generalists who have the broad overview and are able to evaluate the great variety of factors and processes controlling a geologic system, such as a sedimentary basin. In addition, this also means that cooperation with other disciplines in the natural sciences and engi neering is increasingly important. Modern text books providing this broad overview of the earth sciences are rare. Some are written by several authors together to make sure that all topics are treated properly. When individual authors write a book, they run the risk of creating a text that is less balanced, because they cannot avoid indulging their own preferences for specific topics and field examples. However, this disadvantage can be compensated for by the fact that just one author can produce a more concise and uniform text and include ap propriate cross references.
