Book excerpt: The following study deals with the fluid-alteration history of fractured and faulted crystalline granitic basement in the Rhine rift system, based on the analytical investigation of clay mineral assemblages. It evaluates the argillite mineralizations along faults and fracture zones at key tectonic positions in relation to the upper Rhine graben rift structure and assesses the timing and episodic nature of clay mineral formation that occurred within both the buried basement rocks and similar exhumed units exposed in the uplifted rift shoulders. The rock alteration history is established largely on the basis of combined X-ray diffraction, X-ray textural goniometry, electron microscopy (SEM, HRTEM) and isotopic (K-Ar) techniques. One chapter presents results from the granitic basement rocks of the 2230m deep EPS-1 drilling site at Soultz-sous-Forêts, situated in the western part of the Upper Rhine graben basin (France). Pure illite without any sign of mixed-layerings could be distinguished in the different hydrothermal altered and fractured granite and argillite veins. The morphology of these illites varies clearly in the different rock types, with pseudo-hexagonal, platy 2M1 illite polytypes dominating the veins and thin and fibrous to lath shaped 1M trans-vacant illite polytypes common in pores of the granite matrix. Book excerpt: The Middle Proterozoic Midcontinent Rift System (MRS) of North America is a failed rift that formed in response to region-wide stresses about 1,100 Ma. In Iowa, the MRS is buried beneath 2,200-3,500 ft of Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks and Quaternary glaciogenic deposits. An extremely large volume of sediments was deposited within basins associated with the rift at several stages during its development. Although the uplift of a rift-axial horst resulted in the erosional removal of most of these clastic rocks from the central region of the MRS in Iowa, thick sequences are preserved in a series of horst-bounding basins. Recent studies incorporating petrographic analysis, geophysical modeling, and other analytical procedures have led to the establishment of a preliminary stratigraphy for these clastic rocks and interpretations of basin geometries. This information has allowed the refinement of existing theories and history of MRS formation in Iowa. Additionally, drill samples previously interpreted as indicating the existence of early Paleozoic basins overlying the Proterozoic MRS basins were re-examined. Samples previously interpreted as deep-lying Paleozoic rocks are now known to have caved from upper levels of the drillhole and were out of stratigraphic position. No deep Paleozoic basins exist in this area. These investigations led to the development of petrographic parameters useful in differentiating the Proterozoic MRS Red clastics from Paleozoic clastic rocks having similar lithologies.

Though, originally viewed primarily as source and seal rocks, introduction of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing technologies have essentially redefined the role of shale rocks in unconventional reservoirs. In the geological setting, the deposition, formation and transformation of sedimentary rocks are characterised by interactions between their clay components and formation fluids at subsurface elevated temperatures and pressures. The main driving forces in evolution of any sedimentary rock formation are geochemistry (chemistry of solids and fluids) and geomechanics (earth stresses). During oil and gas production, clay minerals are exposed to engineered fluids, which initiate further reactions with significant implications. Application of hydraulic fracturing in shale formations also means exposure and reaction between shale clay minerals and hydraulic fracturing fluids. This chapter presents an overview of currently available published literature on interactions between formation clay minerals and fluids in the subsurface. The overview is particularly focused on the geochemical and geomechanical impacts of interactions between formation clays and hydraulic fracturing fluids, with the goal to identify knowledge gaps and new research questions on the subject.

Book excerpt: Fluid is present in many tectonic settings in the Earth’s crust and plays a fundamental role in controlling chemical, physical and kinetic properties of rocks in both static and dynamic environments. This PhD project aims to provide a deeper understanding of the interaction between fluid, rock microstructure and chemical reactions by combining experimental and field approaches. In the experimental studies, a variety of aspects of fluid-mediated mineral replacement are explored in controlled static conditions. This study demonstrates that in simple salt systems fluid-mediated replacement reactions can create deformationresembling microstructures. Similar microstructures in natural samples may be misinterpreted as resulting from crystal-plastic deformation. The experiments on polycrystalline materials reveal that the microstructures of reaction products as well as the reaction pathways can vary dramatically depending on the rate-limiting step in the replacement process (either dissolution, component transport or precipitation) and can be modified by varying fluid composition. Even slight changes in the chemistry of the reactive fluid determine if the reaction is controlled by grain boundary geometry, crystallographic orientation or reaction-generated porosity. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that in systems, where fluid undergoes continuous compositional evolution during interaction with the parent material, rapid dissolution-precipitation processes can create mineralogically and structurally complex, symplectite microstructures. The thesis is concluded with a field study, comparing samples deformed in fluid-limited versus fluid-abundant conditions. The two cases display significant differences in the activated deformation mechanisms and chemical processes, indicating dramatically different rheologies and paths of microstructural evolution. Results of this thesis show that the presence of a reactive fluid in geologic systems is more than just a kinetic factor. Fluid can control the mechanisms that govern deformation and mineral reactions on a fundamental level. In-depth understanding of these controls can lead to more accurate models for predicting the consequences of fluid-rock interaction in a variety of physio-chemical systems.

Their petrological and structural alterations occur during their path from deep-seated sources to their crustal emplacement. Therefore, these rocks are suitable for the study of fluid-rock interaction during the syn- and postorogenic processes. Reactions between rock and water-dominated fluid result in matrix alterations, the formation of veins, shear zones and mineral zonations. Eight localities from the Upper- and Uppermost Allochthonous units of the Norwegian Caledonides were chosen to investigate relative time and place of fluid input, composition and amount of fluid, reacting with ultramafic rocks in different geological settings. Precursor rock, country rock and metamorphic evolution influenced fluid composition and reactions with the ultramafics. All rocks are isofacial with their country rock. Under greenschist facies conditions the formation of serpentinites is typical, and the formation of ophicarbonates only requires small amounts of CO2. With increasing temperature, the formation of talc-marbles requires higher CO2 amounts. In the brittle to ductile regime, fluid flow is mainly channelled and deformation enforces fluid-rock interaction. Under amphibolite facies conditions, pervasive and channelled fluid flow is about equal. With increasing temperature first CO2 is controlling the reactions. From amphibolite facies on, SiO2 becomes more abundant in the fluid and controls mineral reactions. Once SiO2 is released, it remains efficient during retrograde evolution. With increasing temperature, diffusion becomes more important. Under granulite facies conditions, CO2-metasomatism causes the formation of sagvandites, and SiO2 is inferred to be added from the country rock. Diffusion becomes more dominant resulting in the formation of reaction veins.

What is the direction and rate of flow in a given structure? What factors control the rates of chemical reaction within the rocks? What governs the dissolution of materials in some regions and their deposition in other areas that, over eons, leads to the distribution of minerals we see today? The search for answers to these issues involves a combination of approaches and subjects that includes geochemistry, structural geology, and fluid mechanics. In Flow and Reactions in Permeable Rocks, Dr. Owen Phillips provides the first book-length work that connects these different fields of study and applies them to the problem of flow and flow-controlled reaction in rocks. The author begins by specifying the general physical and chemical principles that govern fluid flow and chemical reactions in rocks. He then develops the theoretical underpinnings for a variety of different patterns of flow and for the three basic types of flow-controlled reaction: fronts, gradient reactions, and reactions in mixing zones. In the next chapter he explores some conditions for stability and instability in fluid flow, for instance the conditions under which one state of flow pattern spontaneously evolves into another. It is hoped eventually to present a survey of the ductile field in a separate volume. The last chapter of this volume deals with the transition between the two fields. The scope of this survey has been limited to the mec.hanical properties of rock viewed as a material on the laboratory scale. Thus, the topic and approach is of a "materials science" kind rather than of a "structures" kind. We are dealing with only one part of the wider field of rock mechanics, which also includes structural or boundary value problems, for example, those of the stability of slopes, the collapse of mine openings, earth quakes, the folding of stratified rock, and the convec tive motion of the earth's mantle. One topic thus ex cluded is the role of jointing, which it is commonly necessary to take into account in applications in engi neering and mining, and probably often in geology too.
