The present study used data from the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) to look at student, classroom and school factors influencing mathematics achievement in the United States ( US) and Australia. It found that classroom differences account for about one-third of the variation in student achievement in the United States and over 0ne-quarter in Australia. Much of the classroom variation was due to compositional and organisational factors. This has important implications for policy regarding the improvement of mathematics achievement in schools.

Book excerpt: No matter how mathematics achievement and persistence are measured, African Americans seem to lag behind their peers. This state of affairs is typically explained in terms of student ability, family background, differential treatment by teachers, and biased curricula. But what can explain disproportionately poor performance and persistence of African-American students who clearly possess the ability to do well, who come from varied family and socioeconomic backgrounds, who are taught by caring and concerned teachers, and who learn mathematics in the context of a reform-oriented mathematics curriculum? And, why do some African-American students succeed in mathematics when underachievement is the norm among their fellow students? Danny Martin addresses these questions in Mathematics Success and Failure Among African-American Youth, the results of a year-long ethnographic and observational study of African-American students and their parents and teachers. Mathematics Success and Failure Among African-American Youth goes beyond the conventional explanations of ability, socioeconomic status, differential treatment, and biased curricula to consider the effects of history, community, and peers--and the individual agency that allows some students to succeed despite these influences. Martin's analysis suggests that prior studies of mathematics achievement and persistence among African Americans have failed to link sociohistorical, community, school, and intrapersonal forces in sufficiently meaningful ways, and that they suffer from theoretical and methodological limitations that hinder the ability of mathematics educators to reverse the negative achievement and persistence trends that continue to afflict African-American students. The analyses and findings offered in Martin's book lead to exciting implications for future research and intervention efforts concerning African-American students--and other students for whom history and context play an important role. This book will be useful and informative to many groups: mathematics education researchers, education researchers interested in the social context of learning and teaching, policymakers, preservice and in-service teachers, students, parents, and community advocates. It will also be of interest to readers concerned with multicultural education, cross-cultural studies of mathematics learning, sociology of education, Black Studies, and issues of underrepresentation in science and mathematics.

Book excerpt: United States policymakers have taken measures to improve learning for all students emphasizing the use of scientifically based research in choosing educational programs to promote school improvement and student learning. However, educators, researchers and policymakers debate about which factors are most important in affecting student achievement. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) places major emphasis upon teacher quality as a factor in improving achievement for all students. This emphasis grows out of research showing that teachers' mastery of the academic content they teach is critical to engaging students and is a significant factor in raising levels of student achievement. Middle or secondary school teachers must possess the equivalent of an academic major in the core academic area (107th U.S. Congress, 2002). To meet this need, a key goal of the Cleveland MSP was to increase middle school teacher content knowledge in mathematics through teacher participation in graduate coursework. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the degree of impact that this program had on middle grades student mathematics achievement. In addition, the stability of teaching assignment was investigated. A two- level hierarchical linear model was used to explore the relationship between the teacher and student variables. Over 2500 student cases and over 90 teacher cases per grade level were used for analysis. Results indicated that teacher MSP participation, as a main effect, was significantly and negatively associated with student achievement on the sixth grade OAT-M. In addition, there was a significant positive relationship between teacher MSP participation and student achievement on the OAT-M when students had additional instructional time for sixth and eighth grades. Teacher assignment stability, as a main effect, was significantly and positively associated with sixth grade student achievement on the OAT-M and was significantly and negatively associated with eighth grades student achievement in mathematics when students had additional instructional time. Finally, the main effect of classroom mean prior achievement was significantly and negatively associated with eighth grade mathematics achievement, and classroom mean prior achievement was positively associated with student prior achievement for seventh grade students. As shown in this study, teacher participation in graduate level content coursework can enhance other teacher and student characteristics and thereby contribute to middle grades student achievement in mathematics.

Still, certain student at-risk factors have been identified across the research literature that negatively impact likelihood to finish school and may increase prevalence of school dropout. That is, for students identified as at-risk, more maladaptive profiles of risk factors often lead to lower academic performance. However, these risk factors are typically non-adaptive, stable constructs endemic of prior experiences or external family-focused factors often uncontrolled by students; as such, transforming student achievement just by addressing this risk-performance relationship is insufficient. This study targeted this limitation by focusing on virtual learning environments. In online virtual-based learning, several important variables more amenable to change are posited to be important for student success in this study. These include mathematics self-efficacy, technology self-efficacy for online learning, and effective time management planning and monitoring. Combining these adaptive student personal characteristics with risk factors, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between student at-risk factors and mathematics achievement in the context of one online charter high school. Further, the study examined how student personal characteristics, which are often amenable to change and intervention, impact the relationship between risk and mathematics achievement. Using multiple linear regression, this study explored how at-risk factors interacted with student personal characteristics to influence mathematics achievement. Thus, the priority was to interpret the statistical mechanisms by which these student personal characteristics influenced the risk to achievement relationship. Results show that student performed at an average level in their Algebra 1 course. Further, students’ age, likely coinciding with the grade level they took the courses negatively and significantly predicted course grade. This result suggests that when students take the course, when they take it for the first time, or if they repeat the course, has a significant impact of the course achievement outcomes. Additionally, domain-specific self-efficacy in mathematics contributed most to course grade among the hypothesized moderators. Finally, the impact of family socioeconomic status (SES) on course grade was conditioned on level of one’s self-efficacy or time management. In general, more adaptive levels of one of the moderators lessened the impact of SES. On the other hand, while not significant, the conditional effect of the moderators on the relationship between parental involvement to course grade generally showed that higher levels of the moderators amplified this impact. This inquiry aims to enhance our understanding of the learning context in high school online learning, seeking to improve our awareness of critical and personal online learning factors that positively impact at-risk students’ online learning experience and achievement. Results of this study have important significance to high school virtual leaning in the mathematics classroom. The results show that when students have more adaptive self-efficacy or study behavior profile, impacts of prior family-based academic risk factors on achievement are lessened or positively strengthened. For virtual schools moving forward, teachers and administrators should consider ways to strengthen students’ self-efficacy and build programs to teach students about important learning behaviors, such as time management strategies.
