Book Classification of Books in the Library Classic Reprint

Download or read book Classification of Books in the Library Classic Reprint written by University of California and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classification of Books in the Library The note to the first edition of this Classification, published in 1894, stated that this classification of books, practically applied to a university collection of volumes, in its collocation of subjects is believed to more nearly conform to courses of instruction at present pursued in the University than do other schemes now in print. Whenever required by large increase of the library, a more minute differentiation of topics may be effected by adding lower case letters of the alphabet to class marks here given. Gradual growth to over volumes (april, 1915) has necessitated amplification. No changes, no erasures, were re quired on the books, catalogues, or other records; the addition of one or more letters proved to be a simple, rapid, cheap process. New subjects. Like Aeroplanes, Photo-plays, War of 1914 easily found their appropriate places. The expansion has been carried down through class 302, and a few other subjects - as Botany, Architecture, Semitic and Ger manic Literatures, have been similarly treated. For these por tions the classification is ample in a general library of this size. We are printing a very limited edition of the classification as it now stands for our own convenience, and therefore need not apologize for not expanding it as a whole. The system is available, not only for the arrangement of books on the shelves, but also for their classification in a subject catalogue. Indeed, the shelf lists them selves form - when properly made - a subject catalogue, which may be sent Off to the printer as soon as there is money enough to pay for setting them Up in type. It is true that most of the ends of a subject catalogue may be gained by the modern dic tionary catalogue - combining authors and subjects in one alphabet - which it is to the credit Of Mr. Poole to have invented, and Of Messrs. Cutter, Noyes, and others to have developed; but, nevertheless, to my mind, the ideal printed catalogue is a classified one, with a cepious alphabetical index. Suppose that the British Museum had such a printed catalogue to-day, how much would the usefulness of that great Institution be enhanced! Book A Classification and Subject Index for Cataloguing and Arranging the Books and Pamphlets of a Library Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Classification and Subject Index, for Cataloguing and Arranging the Books and Pamphlets of a Library The plan of the following Classification and Index was developed early in 1873. It was the result of several months study of library economy as found in some hundreds of books and pamphlets, and in over fifty personal visits to' various American libraries. In this study, the author became convinced that the useful ness of these libraries might be greatly increased without additional expenditure. Three years practical use of the system here explained, leads him to believe that it will accomplish this result; for with its aid, the catalogues, shelf lists, indexes, and cross-references essential to this increased usefulness, can be made more economically than by any other method which he has been able to find. The system was devised for cataloguing and indexing purposes, but it was found on trial to be equally valuable for numbering and arranging books and pamphlets on the shelves. Book An Introduction to Library Classification

Download or read book An Introduction to Library Classification written by William Charles Berwick Sayers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Library Classification: With Readings, Questions and Examination Papers In order to meet it I have reproduced here, after an exhaustive and somewhat wearisome revision, a series of lessons which I prepared some eight or nine years ago at the suggestion of the late James Duff Brown for the use of students working for the examinations of the Library Association. This original purpose determined the plan of the book, and I have thought it advisable to retain it, in Spite of the fact that it leaves the work full of repeti tions which may be irritating to readers who have some knowledge of the subject. Throughout I have tried to be as rudimentary and as lucid as possible. I assume that my readers are beginners without the most elementary acquaintance with either logic or classification. Necessarily, in so small a compass, I have not exhausted any of the problems of classi fication every chapter could have been expanded tenfold, especially in the second half of the book, but I believe that the essential themes are all touched upon in a way that will lead students to appreciate their meaning and significance. One or two paragraphs are repeated from earlier books Of mine, as I thought it would be affectation to attempt to rewrite what I had written as well as I was able. The simple hypothesis that underlies all I have written is that a general classification is primarily a schedule of the field of knowledge that it is possible to assume an order in knowledge; and that the order most clearly indicated by modern scientific method is the historical order. A general book classification in its essentials is identical with a knowledge classification, and only differs from it in the provision of general and form classes and divisions, and such practical auxiliaries as a notation and an index. All mounting for this collection has been done with entire satisfaction by the Rose Bindery of Boston, Mass. Dark mounts, known as stone gray and steel gray, have been used in prefer ence to the light gray, as they harmonize better with the tones of the photographs and are less easily soiled. For some of the larger carbon prints, brown mounts have been chosen. I t is of the greatest impor tance that the mounting should be well done inorder to prevent warp ing, and that the mounts should be light in weight, thin, and flexible, yet tough. Download or read book Manual of Library Classification and Shelf Arrangement Classic Reprint written by James D. Brown and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Library Classification and Shelf Arrangement This work has been prepared to meet the requirements of those who are engaged or interested in the study of practical library methods. No English book on this subject has been issued since Edwards dealt with classifications generally in his Memoirs of Libraries, published in 1859; and the literature of the subject consists of little more than papers on single schemes. Classification has never been a strong point in British libraries, and this has arisen partly from apathy on the part of librarians, but also from the difficulty of obtaining information about American and foreign schemes which have been successfully applied to libraries. Leaving out of view Petzholdt's list of classifications contained in his Bibliotheca Bibliographica (1866), I have been unable to find that any single work devoted entirely to a systematic examination of schemes has ever been issued in any country. This little book has been prepared, accordingly, to fill a well-defined space in library literature; and however inadequate or slight the attempt may be, it is earnestly hoped that it will in some measure help to stimulate interest in the subject of classification. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Classification of Library Economy and Office Papers The date number analysed is 6 (for 1906) N (for November), 14 (for 14th). The main objection to classifying correspondence is the liability of placing a letter where it cannot be found when it is wanted, but this is a danger to some extent, of even an alphabetical arrangement. It may be entirely obviated by having an alphabetical index of correspondents and entering the numbers under which each letter is filed under their names. This should be on cards or slips, and will serve as an address register, as well as an index to the correspondence. There is practically no more trouble in keeping this record than in indexing an ordinary letter book. Of course.
