Book Guide to the Library of Congress Classification

Download or read book Guide to the Library of Congress Classification written by Lois Mai Chan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like earlier editions, this thoroughly updated sixth edition of the classic textbook provides readers with a basic understanding of the Library of Congress Classification system and its applications. The Library of Congress Classification system is used in academic, legal, medical, and research libraries throughout North America as well as worldwide; accordingly, catalogers and librarians in these settings all need to be able to use it. The established gold standard text for Library of Congress Classification (LCC), the sixth edition of Guide to the Library of Congress Classification updates and complements the classic textbook's coverage of cataloging in academic and research libraries. Clear and easy to understand, the text describes the reasoning behind assigning subject headings and subheadings, including use of tables; explains the principles, structure, and format of LCC; details notation, tables, assigning class numbers, and individual classes; and covers classification of special types of library materials. The last chapter of this perennially useful resource addresses the potential role of classification in libraries of the future.

Book The Endoscopic Classification of Representations Orthogonal and Symplectic Groups

Download or read book The Endoscopic Classification of Representations Orthogonal and Symplectic Groups written by James Arthur and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the Langlands program, endoscopy is a fundamental process for relating automorphic representations of one group with those of another. In this book, Arthur establishes an endoscopic classification of automorphic representations of orthogonal and symplectic groups . The representations are shown to occur in families (known as global -packets and -packets), which are parametrized by certain self-dual automorphic representations of an associated general linear group . The central result is a simple and explicit formula for the multiplicity in the automorphic discrete spectrum of for any representation in a family. The results of the volume have already had significant applications: to the local Langlands correspondence, the construction of unitary representations, the existence of Whittaker models, the analytic behaviour of Langlands -functions, the spectral theory of certain locally symmetric spaces, and to new phenomena for symplectic epsilon-factors. One can expect many more. In fact, it is likely that both the results and the techniques of the volume will have applications to almost all sides of the Langlands program. The methods are by comparison of the trace formula of with its stabilization (and a comparison of the twisted trace formula of with its stabilization, which is part of work in progress by Moeglin and Waldspurger). This approach is quite different from methods that are based on -functions, converse theorems, or the theta correspondence. The comparison of trace formulas in the volume ought to be applicable to a much larger class of groups. Any extension at all will have further important implications for the Langlands program.

Book Mixture Model Based Classification

Download or read book Mixture Model Based Classification written by Paul D. McNicholas and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a great overview of the field of model-based clustering and classification by one of its leading developers. McNicholas provides a resource that I am certain will be used by researchers in statistics and related disciplines for quite some time. The discussion of mixtures with heavy tails and asymmetric distributions will place this text as the authoritative, modern reference in the mixture modeling literature." (Douglas Steinley, University of Missouri) Mixture Model-Based Classification is the first monograph devoted to mixture model-based approaches to clustering and classification. This is both a book for established researchers and newcomers to the field. A history of mixture models as a tool for classification is provided and Gaussian mixtures are considered extensively, including mixtures of factor analyzers and other approaches for high-dimensional data. Non-Gaussian mixtures are considered, from mixtures with components that parameterize skewness and/or concentration, right up to mixtures of multiple scaled distributions. Several other important topics are considered, including mixture approaches for clustering and classification of longitudinal data as well as discussion about how to define a cluster Paul D. McNicholas is the Canada Research Chair in Computational Statistics at McMaster University, where he is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. His research focuses on the use of mixture model-based approaches for classification, with particular attention to clustering applications, and he has published extensively within the field. He is an associate editor for several journals and has served as a guest editor for a number of special issues on mixture models.

Book New Developments in Classification and Data Analysis

Download or read book New Developments in Classification and Data Analysis written by Maurizio Vichi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-05-06 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains revised versions of selected papers presented during the biannual meeting of the Classification and Data Analysis Group of SocietA Italiana di Statistica, which was held in Bologna, September 22-24, 2003. The scientific program of the conference included 80 contributed papers. Moreover it was possible to recruit six internationally renowned invited spe- ers for plenary talks on their current research works regarding the core topics of IFCS (the International Federation of Classification Societies) and Wo- gang Gaul and the colleagues of the GfKl organized a session. Thus, the conference provided a large number of scientists and experts from home and abroad with an attractive forum for discussions and mutual exchange of knowledge. The talks in the different sessions focused on methodological developments in supervised and unsupervised classification and in data analysis, also p- viding relevant contributions in the context of applications. This suggested the presentation of the 43 selected papers in three parts as follows: CLASSIFICATION AND CLUSTERING Non parametric classification Clustering and dissimilarities MULTIVARIATE STATISTICS AND DATA ANALYSIS APPLIED MULTIVARIATE STATISTICS Environmental data Microarray data Behavioural and text data Financial data We wish to express our gratitude to the authors whose enthusiastic p- ticipation made the meeting possible. We are very grateful to the reviewers for the time spent in their professional reviewing work. We would also like to extend our thanks to the chairpersons and discussants of the sessions: their comments and suggestions proved very stimulating both for the authors and the audience.

Download or read book Classifying the Cosmos written by Steven J. Dick and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the invention of the telescope 400 years ago, astronomers have rapidly discovered countless celestial objects. But how does one make sense of it all? Astronomer and former NASA Chief Historian Steven J. Dick brings order to this menagerie by defining 82 classes of astronomical objects, which he places in a beginner-friendly system known as "Astronomy’s Three Kingdoms.” Rather than concentrating on technicalities, this system focuses on the history of each object, the nature of its discovery, and our current knowledge about it. The ensuing book can therefore be read on at least two levels. On one level, it is an illustrated guide to various types of astronomical wonders. On another level, it is considerably more: the first comprehensive classification system to cover all celestial objects in a consistent manner. Accompanying each spread are spectacular historical and modern images. The result is a pedagogical tour-de-force, whereby readers can easily master astronomy’s three realms of planets, stars, and galaxies.
