Book Fundamentals of Transportation Systems Analysis

Download or read book Fundamentals of Transportation Systems Analysis written by Marvin L. Manheim and published by Mit Press. This book was released on 1979-06 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation systems analysis is a multidisciplinary field which draws on engineering, economics, operations research, political science, psychology, management, and other disciplines. The major text synthesizes from these fields an approach that is intellectually coherent and comprehensive. Numerous details are provided to indicate how major concepts can be applied in practice to particular modes and problems. But the major objective of this book is to provide the reader with a basic framework onto which many different areas of specialization can be added by later coursework and practical experience. Fundamentals of Transportation Systems Analysis identifies concepts that are truly fundamental to serious work in the planning, design, or management of transportation systems. It also emphasizes, through more detailed treatment, certain topics, such as transportation demand and performance and the processes of evaluation and choice, that are inadequately treated in the available literature. A unique feature of the book is its emphasis on multimodal solutions to transportation problems. The student is taught to view the transportation system as a unified whole and to evaluate it within the context of the overall social, economic, and political system of a given region. According to Professor Manheim, "The challenge of transportation systems analysis is to intervene, delicately and deliberately, in the complex fabric of a society to use transport effectively, in coordination with other public and private actions, to achieve the goals of that society."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Logistics is the management function responsible for the flow of materials through the supply chain. Freight transport typically accounts for a third of total logistics costs and is a major determinant of the quality of a distribution service. This comprehensive and integrated collection includes a wide range of previously published articles from logistics management, operations research and economics journals, as well as the mainstream transport literature. The volume is divided into 13 sections covering the full spectrum of research in the field, including the modelling of freight flows, just-in-time delivery, modal split, vehicle routing and utilisation, the environmental impact of freight transport operations, city logistics and telematics and the deregulation of freight markets. This authoritative volume will be an essential compendium for those teaching in and researching in the rapidly-expanding field of transport logistics and will be of interest to those involved in the management of logistics and formulation of public policy on freight transport.

Book Analysis of Transport Phenomena

Download or read book Analysis of Transport Phenomena written by William Murray Deen and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of Transport Phenomena, Second Edition, provides a unified treatment of momentum, heat, and mass transfer, emphasizing the concepts and analytical techniques that apply to these transport processes. The second edition has been revised to reinforce the progression from simple to complex topics and to better introduce the applied mathematics that is needed both to understand classical results and to model novel systems. A common set of formulation, simplification, and solution methods is applied first to heat or mass transfer in stationary media and then to fluid mechanics, convective heat or mass transfer, and systems involving various kinds of coupled fluxes. FEATURES: * Explains classical methods and results, preparing students for engineering practice and more advanced study or research * Covers everything from heat and mass transfer in stationary media to fluid mechanics, free convection, and turbulence * Improved organization, including the establishment of a more integrative approach * Emphasizes concepts and analytical techniques that apply to all transport processes * Mathematical techniques are introduced more gradually to provide students with a better foundation for more complicated topics discussed in later chapters

Book Topics in Optimal Transportation

Download or read book Topics in Optimal Transportation written by Cédric Villani and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2021-08-25 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive introduction to the theory of mass transportation with its many—and sometimes unexpected—applications. In a novel approach to the subject, the book both surveys the topic and includes a chapter of problems, making it a particularly useful graduate textbook. In 1781, Gaspard Monge defined the problem of “optimal transportation” (or the transferring of mass with the least possible amount of work), with applications to engineering in mind. In 1942, Leonid Kantorovich applied the newborn machinery of linear programming to Monge's problem, with applications to economics in mind. In 1987, Yann Brenier used optimal transportation to prove a new projection theorem on the set of measure preserving maps, with applications to fluid mechanics in mind. Each of these contributions marked the beginning of a whole mathematical theory, with many unexpected ramifications. Nowadays, the Monge-Kantorovich problem is used and studied by researchers from extremely diverse horizons, including probability theory, functional analysis, isoperimetry, partial differential equations, and even meteorology. Originating from a graduate course, the present volume is intended for graduate students and researchers, covering both theory and applications. Readers are only assumed to be familiar with the basics of measure theory and functional analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been my experience in teaching graduate and undergraduate courses that if the students are conversant with the pertinent mathematical proce dures, and can "think mathematically," there is almost no limit to their comprehension. Most courses that are considered difficult by students are either poorly taught or require a degree of mathematical sophistication that the students do not possess. In Transport Analysis, J have culled some basic momentum transport (fluid flow) and mass transport phenomena and explicitly revealed the derivation of the governing equations. There is no mystery, no omitted steps or "it can be shown" phrases that are usually the bane of the student. There are chapters that review basic calculus, vector and matrix concepts, Laplace transform operations, and finite difference calculus. Ordinary dif ferential and partial differential equations are derived and solved. This book is intended for undergraduates and graduate students in engineering, chemistry, physics, and even biology and medicine. It is also intended for my non-engineering colleagues with whom I have collaborated during our cooperative research in the life sciences. If they knew what is contained in Transport Analysis, they probably wouldn't need me. v Acknowledgments To Barbara and Michael, who helped keep me alert, happy, and ful filled. Book Advanced Methods in Transportation Analysis

Download or read book Advanced Methods in Transportation Analysis written by Lucio Bianco and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a compendium of papers presented during the second TRlennal Symposium on Transportation ANalysis (TRISTAN II) that took place in Capri, Italy on June 23-28, 1994. The Symposium was organized by the Progetto Finalizzato Trasporti and the Istituto di Analisi dei Sistemi ed Informatica of the Italian National Research Council jointly with the Italian Operations Research Society. The purpose of this kind of meetings is to periodically allow an exchange of views and findings by scientists in the field of transportation analysis methods and tools. Therefore, the papers presented dealt with a wide range of topics and cover the different aspects of transportation analysis. The material contained in this book gives particular emphasis to the development of mathematical modelling and algorithms. This development is due to the evolution of digital computers and the continuous increase of the computing power. In fact the need of solving large scale problems (crew scheduling, network traffic control, pollution monitoring and control,. etc ... ) involves in some case, thousands of variables and therefore sophisticated mathematical models and computational algorithms.

Book Heavy Traffic Analysis of a Transportation Network Model Classic Reprint

Download or read book Heavy Traffic Analysis of a Transportation Network Model Classic Reprint written by William P. Peterson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heavy Traffic Analysis of a Transportation Network Model We study a model of a stochastic transportation system introduced by Crane. By adapting constructions of multidimensional reflected Brownian motion (RBM) that have since been developed for feedforward queueing networks, we generalize Crane's original functional central limit theorem results to a full vector setting, giving an explicit development for the case in which all terminals in the model experience heavy traffic conditions. We investigate product form conditions for the stationary distribution of our resulting RBM limit, and contrast our results for transportation networks with those for traditional queueing network models.
