Book Fingerstyle Guitar Tunes Early Music Gems

Download or read book Fingerstyle Guitar Tunes Early Music Gems written by Raymond Gonzalez and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of 35 arrangements of early music from Medieval and Renaissance Europe presents familiar pieces like Greensleeves, Canarios, Wilson’s Wild and Kemp’s Jig, as well as pieces that you have probably heard but never knew their origins. Then too, the book includes pieces that reach deep into the repertoire and are new to most listeners and players. This volume contains a mix of vocal and instrumental compositions, all treated with the same melodic emphasis, using both traditional and modal harmonic accompaniment. When appropriate, the use of polyphony to create interesting harmonic structures and modal passing tones were used—a common practice in vocal music of the era. While keeping these arrangements within the language of the period, occasionally a harmonic twist was added for freshness and interest. The arrangements are in standard or dropped-D tuning and are suitable for both steel and nylon-string guitar performance. In addition, the pieces appear in standard notation and tablature so are easily accessible to the intermediate guitarist. To facilitate performance, this book includes access to online audio of every tune, expertly recorded by the author.

Book A Study in Flatpicking

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeff Troxel
  • Publisher : Mel Bay Publications
  • Release : 2024-06-20
  • ISBN : 1513478931
  • Pages : 85 pages

Download or read book A Study in Flatpicking written by Jeff Troxel and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2024-06-20 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, journalist, composer, songwriter, teacher, and 2003 Winfield Flatpicking Guitar Champion, Jeff Troxel, delivers a masterclass in arranging fiddle tunes for flatpicking guitar. These 20 themes and variations on favorite bluegrass melodies are designed to improve overall musicianship and augment your own arranging skills. Ideal for the intermediate to advanced flatpicking guitarist, the author reveals techniques for enabling readers to create their own theme and variations settings. Suggested rhythm guitar chords and light left-hand fingerings are also provided. Troxel points out that one of the unexpected benefits of learning and memorizing themes with variations is that the process will ultimately facilitate linear and harmonic improvisation. It would be a painstaking process to learn this skill from a teacher or a harmony textbook, but once memorized, the scale and arpeggio patterns within these tunes and variations will set you on a viable path towards original improvised lines. As a bonus, the author includes a generous appendix containing several of his Flatpicking Guitar Magazine articles that deal with aspects of musicianship that every guitarist should know. While written in standard notation and tab, if you have relied solely on tablature and recordings in the past, this book can provide the key to understanding essential music theory and reading standard notation. If you’re not quite ready to learn to read standard notation, you can still use the tab and the author’s excellent online recordings to learn these delightful arrangements. In any case, it will be fun to get these settings of standard bluegrass tunes “in-hand” and use them in future jam sessions.

Book The Guitar and Its Music

Download or read book The Guitar and Its Music written by James Tyler and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than twenty years ago James Tyler wrote a modest introduction to the history, repertory, and playing techniques of the four- and five-course guitar. Entitled The Early Guitar: A History and Handbook (OUP 1980), this work proved valuable and enlightening not only to performers and scholarsof Renaissance and Baroque guitar and lute music but also to classical guitarists. This new book, written in collaboration with Paul Sparks (their previous book for OUP, The Early Mandolin, appeared in 1989), presents new ideas and research on the history and development of the guitar and its musicfrom the Renaissance to the dawn of the Classical era.Tyler's systematic study of the two main guitar types found between about 1550 and 1750 focuses principally on what the sources of the music (published and manuscript) and the writings of contemporary theorists reveal about the nature of the instruments and their roles in the music making of theperiod. The annotated lists of primary sources, previously published in The Early Guitar but now revised and expanded, constitute the most comprehensive bibliography of Baroque guitar music to date. His appendices of performance practice information should also prove indispensable to performers andscholars alike.Paul Sparks also breaks new ground, offering an extensive study of a period in the guitar's history--notably c.1759-c.1800--which the standard histories usually dismiss in a few short paragraphs. Far from being a dormant instrument at this time, the guitar is shown to have been central tomusic-making in France, Italy, the Iberian Peninsula, and South America. Sparks provides a wealth of information about players, composers, instruments, and surviving compositions from this neglected but important period, and he examines how the five-course guitar gradually gave way to the six-stringinstrument, a process that occurred in very different ways (and at different times) in France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and Britain.
