Book Music Data Mining

Download or read book Music Data Mining written by Tao Li and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research area of music information retrieval has gradually evolved to address the challenges of effectively accessing and interacting large collections of music and associated data, such as styles, artists, lyrics, and reviews. Bringing together an interdisciplinary array of top researchers, Music Data Mining presents a variety of approaches to successfully employ data mining techniques for the purpose of music processing. The book first covers music data mining tasks and algorithms and audio feature extraction, providing a framework for subsequent chapters. With a focus on data classification, it then describes a computational approach inspired by human auditory perception and examines instrument recognition, the effects of music on moods and emotions, and the connections between power laws and music aesthetics. Given the importance of social aspects in understanding music, the text addresses the use of the Web and peer-to-peer networks for both music data mining and evaluating music mining tasks and algorithms. It also discusses indexing with tags and explains how data can be collected using online human computation games. The final chapters offer a balanced exploration of hit song science as well as a look at symbolic musicology and data mining. The multifaceted nature of music information often requires algorithms and systems using sophisticated signal processing and machine learning techniques to better extract useful information. An excellent introduction to the field, this volume presents state-of-the-art techniques in music data mining and information retrieval to create novel ways of interacting with large music collections.

Book Echo and Narcissus

    Book Details:
  • Author : Amy Lawrence
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 1991-07-23
  • ISBN : 9780520070820
  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book Echo and Narcissus written by Amy Lawrence and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1991-07-23 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do women in classical Hollywood cinema ever truly speak for themselves? In Echo and Narcissus, Amy Lawrence examines eight classic films to show how women's speech is repeatedly constructed as a "problem," an affront to male authority. This book expands feminist studies of the representation of women in film, enabling us to see individual films in new ways, and to ask new questions of other films. Using Sadie Thompson (1928), Blackmail (1929), Rain (1932), The Spiral Staircase, Sorry,Wrong Number, Notorious, Sunset Boulevard (1950) and To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Lawrence illustrates how women's voices are positioned within narratives that require their submission to patriarchal roles and how their attempts to speak provoke increasingly severe repression. She also shows how women's natural ability to speak is interrupted, made difficult, or conditioned to a suffocating degree by sound technology itself. Telephones, phonographs, voice-overs, and dubbing are foregrounded, called upon to silence women and to restore the primacy of the image. Unlike the usage of "voice" by feminist and literary critics to discuss broad issues of authorship and point of view, in film studies the physical voice itself is a primary focus. Echo and Narcissus shows how assumptions about the "deficiencies" of women's voices and speech are embedded in sound's history, technology, uses, and marketing. Moreover, the construction of the woman's voice is inserted into the ideologically loaded cinematic and narrative conventions governing the representation of women in Hollywood film.

Book Classics in Voice and Laryngology

Download or read book Classics in Voice and Laryngology written by Ryan C. Branski and published by Plural Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A superb collection of carefully selected, reprinted articles classified into fifteen subject groups from laryngeal framework and endoscopic surgery, through anatomy, to clinical voice disorders and therapies, and more each of which includes a commentary by leading contemporary professionals. The editors recognize that the field of laryngology and voice represents a small niche within the small niche of otolaryngology. As such, it is unlikely that works seminal to the advancement of the field will ever be recognized in the context of science, in general. However, many publications have significantly altered the way voice production is conceptualized as well as shifted treatment paradigms for patients with voice disorders. Thus, in bringing this collection together for the first time, they have admirably achieved their threefold aim: to recognize great contributions to the field; to provide a written history of the field; and to provide a compilation of landmark manuscripts in the field of laryngology and voice science for both current clinician-scientists as well as future contributors to the field.
