Book Southern Steam Recollections

Download or read book Southern Steam Recollections written by Don Benn and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2019-11-30 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of historic photographs showcases the steam trains of England’s Southern Railway from Devon and Cornwall to Wimbledon and beyond. Train enthusiast Don Benn photographed steam locomotives along England’s Southern Railway from 1960 until steam engines were retired in 1967. In his most prolific years, between 1961 and 1963, Benn captured the last of the classic ex Southern Railway designs, such as the King Arthurs, Lord Nelson and Schools classes. Beloved trains such as the Bournemouth Belle and Lymington Pier boat trains are shown to good effect. The 150 black and white photos presented in this volume, many published here for the first time, span the Southern Region from the east to the ‘withered arm’ in Devon and Cornwall. Special focus is paid to the areas just south and south west of London, including such historic locations as the footpaths at South Croydon and Wimbledon.

Having served the continent for more than a century, North America's most visible symbol of industrial supremacy was obsolete. But a handful of railroads went out of their way to keep steam alive. This stunning volume is a pictorial tribute to working steam in North America, beautifully illustrated and lovingly told. -- Includes prime examples of accurate restorations that illustrate the development of steam locomotives while evoking the mood of this exciting period in North American History -- Filled with discussions of the dedicated preservationists who have kept steam alive in an era when the cost of overhauling and maintenance has become an extravagance -- More than 100 pristine, black-and-white photographs capture some of the most beautiful and historic steam locomotives in operation today

Download or read book The Twilight of Southern Steam written by Don Benn and published by Pen & Sword Books. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is first and foremost the story of the enginemen and their steeds which brought the steam era to an end on the Southern. It is therefore primarily about locomotive performance but enlivened by stories about how that was achieved and also about the band of young men who followed the exploits of men and machines, day and night over those last two years. It includes a substantial contribution from an ex-Nine Elms fireman and many anecdotes about the enginemen. The book contains about eighty train running logs plus records of lineside observations, detailed descriptions of the work covered by the locomotives and crews from the various steam motive power depots, copies of the actual duty rosters posted at Nine Elms, together with a unique collection of about 150 black and white and color images taken in the 1965 to 1967 period covered by this book. It is the most comprehensive story of those last few years yet produced, and it is truly 'The Untold Story', a fine tribute to the enginemen who performed near miracles with their doomed and run-down fleet of locomotives, in the very different world of the mid-1960's railway, unequaled anywhere else in Britain.

Book Perfecting the American Steam Locomotive

Download or read book Perfecting the American Steam Locomotive written by J. Parker Lamb and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2003-07-08 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perfecting the American Steam Locomotive documents the role played by mechanical engineers in the development of locomotive design. The steam engine and the mechanical engineering profession both grew directly out of the Industrial Revolution's need for sources of power beyond that of men and animals. Invented in England when coal mining was being developed, the practical steam engine eventually found numerous applications in transportation, especially in railroad technology. J. Parker Lamb traces the evolution of the steam engine from the early 1700s through the early 1800s, when the first locomotives were sent to the United States from England. Lamb then shifts the scene to the development of the American steam locomotive, first by numerous small builders, and later, by the early 20th century, by only three major enterprises and a handful of railroad company shops. Lamb reviews the steady progress of steam locomotive technology through its pinnacle during the 1930s, then discusses the reasons for its subsequent decline.

Book Southern Railway s Historic Spencer Shops

Download or read book Southern Railway s Historic Spencer Shops written by Larry K. Neal, Jr. and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern Railway's Spencer Shops was a vibrant part of the Southeast's transportation network for more than 80 years. Starting in the late 1800s and continuing until its closure in 1979, the shop complex and its accompanying yards, transfer sheds, and stockyards constituted a major force in the economy of North Carolina and Southern states. The trains that the shop prepared were hauling everyday freight--Appalachian lumber, Piedmont textiles, and perishables--or were famous passenger trains like the Crescent, the Peach Queen, and many more. Others were more notable, such as the locomotive in the folk ballad "The Wreck of the Old 97" or President Roosevelt's funeral train in 1945. The Spencer Shops was an industrial power whose prominence today is celebrated in its continued role as the home to the North Carolina Transportation Museum. This book tells the story of how Spencer Shops came to be, its role in transportation, and its continued use today as a North Carolina Historic Site.
