When Sir Joseph Whitworth promulgated the results of his experiments in 1858, I took considerable pains to ascertain their value, not only from a military point of view, but also from that of the Sportsman and for some years after the institution of the annual trial of small bores by the National Rifle Association, I carefully-attended them at Woolwich, and duly reported the results in the Field, as well as the shooting of the selected rifle at Wimbledon. After some few years, however, they ceased to be of much value to the sportsman, and the pressure of other matters induced me not only to forego all allusion to the trials, but also to discontinue the reports of the Wimbledon Meetings. The result was that, when, after the publication of the first volume, on the Shot gun, I had to turn my attention to the rifle, Ifound that I was several.
