Book excerpt: The highly acclaimed Russian classic of twentieth-century theatre about a wealthy family unable to let go of the past or face the future. At the turn of the century, Russia is undergoing massive changes. Feudalism has ended, the middle class is growing, and the aristocracy are uncertain of their future . . . The cherry orchard on the Ranevskaya grounds is known throughout the country for its beauty, but it now sits on the brink of ruin. The entire estate is headed for auction if the family cannot pay off their debts. The land’s fate lies in the hands of the family’s matriarch, Madame Ranevskaya, recently returned from five years in Paris where she wasted away much of her fortunes. Neither Ranevskaya nor anyone else in her household can fathom the gravity of the situation. But a merchant, the son of a former serf on the land, has an idea . . . Written in 1903, The Cherry Orchard premiered in Moscow in 1904. It was Chekhov’s last play before his death that same year. Since then, the work has been translated and adapted into numerous languages and performed around the world.

Book excerpt: A room which is still called the nursery. One of the doors leads into ANYA'S room. It is close on sunrise. It is May. The cherry-trees are in flower but it is chilly in the garden. There is an early frost. The windows of the room are shut. DUNYASHA comes in with a candle, and LOPAKHIN with a book in his hand. LOPAKHIN. The train's arrived, thank God. What's the time? DUNYASHA. It will soon be two. [Blows out candle] It is light already. LOPAKHIN. How much was the train late? Two hours at least. [Yawns and stretches himself] I have made a rotten mess of it! I came here on purpose to meet them at the station, and then overslept myself . . . in my chair. It's a pity. I wish you'd wakened me. DUNYASHA. I thought you'd gone away. [Listening] I think I hear them coming.

Book excerpt: Anton Chekhov wrote that "narrative is my legal wife and drama a flamboyant, rowdy, impudent, exhausting mistress." At a time when the Russian stage was dominated by farces, formulaic melodramas, and vaudevilles, Chekhov created plays that focused on characters grappling with moral questions. His works baffled his audiences, but his sensitive explorations of love, loss, and time as well as his portrayal of complex characters and ambiguities, revolutionized the theater with an exhilarating new form of drama. This volume includes new translations, full explanatory notes, a chronology, suggestions for further reading, and a glossary, as well as an introduction by eminent Chekhov scholar Richard Gilman.

Book excerpt: "Pevear and Volokhonsky are at once scrupulous translators and vivid stylists of English."--"The New Yorker" There have always been two versions of Chekhov's heartrending and humorous masterwork: the one with which we are all familiar, staged by Konstatine Stanislavski at the Moscow Art Theatre in 1904, and the one Chekhov had originally envisioned. Now, for the first time, both are available and published here in a single volume in translations by the renowned playwright Richard Nelson and Richard Peavar and Larissa Volokhonsky, the foremost contemporary translators of classic Russian literature. Shedding new light on this most revered play, the translators reconstructed the script Chekhov first submitted and all of the changes he made prior to rehearsal. The result is a major event in the publishing of Chekhov's canon. Richard Nelson's many plays include "Rodney's Wife," "Goodnight Children Everywhere," Drama Desk-nominated "Franny's Way" and "Some Americans Abroad," Tony Award-nominated "Two Shakespearean Actors" and "James Joyce's The Dead" (with Shaun Davey), for which he won a Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical, and the critically acclaimed, searing play cycle, "The Apple Family Plays." Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky have produced acclaimed translations of Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Nikolai Gogol, Anton Chekhov, and Mikhail Bulgakov. Their translations of "The Brothers Karamazov" and "Anna Karenina" won the 1991 and 2002 PEN/Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prizes. Pevvear, a native of Boston, and Volokhonsjky, of St. Petersburg, are married to each other and live in Paris.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Cherry Orchard' is the last play by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov. It opened at the Moscow Art Theatre on 17 January 1904 in a production directed by Constantin Stanislavski. Although Chekhov intended it as a comedy, and it does contain some elements of farce, Stanislavski insisted on directing the play as a tragedy. Since this initial production, directors have had to contend with the dual nature of the play. The play concerns an aristocratic Russian woman and her family as they return to their family estate (which includes a large and well-known cherry orchard) just before it is auctioned to pay the mortgage. While presented with options to save the estate, the family essentially does nothing and the play ends with the sale of the estate to the son of a former serf; the family leaves to the sound of the cherry orchard being cut down. The story presents themes of cultural futility - both the futile attempts of the aristocracy to maintain its status and of the bourgeoisie to find meaning in its newfound materialism. In reflecting the socio-economic forces at work in Russia at the turn of the 20th century, including the rise of the middle class after the abolition of serfdom in the mid-19th century and the sinking of the aristocracy, the play reflects forces at work around the globe in that period.
