Book excerpt: The Classic Film Series highlights movies from the past, forgotten, overlooked and cherished alike, selected for their influence, relevance and worth. Following on from the controversial success of If...., director Lindsay Anderson, writer David Sherwin and actor Malcolm McDowell teamed up again in 1973 for O Lucky Man! Epic, savage, sharp, wicked, satirical, and funny, O Lucky Man! wasn't quite as appreciated in its day as it perhaps should have been. Swiping at everything the nation had to offer, O Lucky Man! was damned as anarchic and arrogant, and met with a lukewarm reception. At almost 3 hours long and artier than most other films of the time, Warner Bros. didn't know what to do with it. Nearly 40 years on O Lucky Man! has a cult following and is seen by many as one of the finest British films of its day. Writer Chris Wade takes a look at this extraordinary film, through exclusive material from the Lindsay Anderson archive, interviews, cast recollections and press cuttings from the day.

Book The Terrible Privacy of Maxwell Sim

Download or read book The Terrible Privacy of Maxwell Sim written by Jonathan Coe and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-03-08 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maxwell Sim can’t seem to make a single meaningful connection. His absent father was always more interested in poetry; he maintains an e-mail correspondence with his estranged wife, though under a false identity; his incomprehensible teenage daughter prefers her BlackBerry to his conversation; and his best friend since childhood is refusing to return his calls. He has seventy-four friends on Facebook, but nobody to talk to. In an attempt to stir himself out of this horrible rut, Max quits his job as a customer liaison at the local department store and accepts a strange business proposition that falls in his lap by chance: he’s hired to drive a Prius full of toothbrushes to the remote Shetland Islands, part of a misguided promotional campaign for a dental-hygiene company intent on illustrating the slogan “We Reach Furthest.” But Max’s trip doesn’t go as planned, as he’s unable to resist making a series of impromptu visits to important figures from his past who live en route. After a string of cruelly enlightening and intensely awkward misadventures, he finds himself falling in love with the soothing voice of his GPS system (“Emma”) and obsessively identifying with a sailor who perpetrated a notorious hoax and subsequently lost his mind. Eventually Max begins to wonder if perhaps it’s a severe lack of self-knowledge that’s hampering his ability to form actual relationships. A humane satire and modern-day picaresque, The Terrible Privacy of Maxwell Sim is a gently comic and rollickingly entertaining novel about the paradoxical difficulties of making genuine attachments in a world of advanced communications technology and rampant social networking.

Book Lindsay Anderson Revisited

Download or read book Lindsay Anderson Revisited written by Erik Hedling and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the British film-maker Lindsay Anderson. Anderson was a highly influential personality within British cinema, mostly famous for landmark films like This Sporting Life (1963) and If....(1968). Lindsay Anderson Revisited deals primarily with hitherto unexplored aspects of his career: his biographical background in the British upper class, his devoted film criticism, and his angry relationship to contemporary society in general. Thus, the book contains chapters about his childhood in India, his writings about John Ford, his relationship to French star Serge Reggiani, his work on TV in the 1950s, his troubles with the British film establishment, and his gradually emerging preoccupation with being Scottish, not English. Also featured are chapters written by close friends of Anderson, who died in 1994, dwelling on his penchant for controversy and quarrel, but also on his remarkable artistic talent and commitment.

Book British films of the 1970s

Download or read book British films of the 1970s written by Paul Newland and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British films of the 1970s offers highly detailed and insightful critical analysis of a range of individual films of the period. This analysis draws upon an innovative range of critical methodologies which place the film texts within a rich variety of historical contexts. The book sets out to examine British films of the 1970s in order to get a clearer understanding of two things – the fragmentary state of the filmmaking culture of the period, and the fragmentary nature of the nation that these films represent. It argues that there is no singular narrative to be drawn about British filmmaking in the 1970s, other than the fact that these films offer evidence of a Britain (and ideas of Britishness) characterised by vicissitudes. While this was a period of struggle and instability, it was also a period of openings, of experiment, and of new ideas. Newland looks at many films, including Carry On Girls, O Lucky Man!, That'll be the Day, The Shout, and The Long Good Friday.

Book Lindsay Anderson

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Izod
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press
  • Release : 2019-01-04
  • ISBN : 1526141604
  • Pages : 349 pages

Download or read book Lindsay Anderson written by John Izod and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a long and varied career, Lindsay Anderson made training films, documentaries, searing family dramas and blistering satires, including This Sporting Life, O Lucky Man! and Britannia Hospital. Students of British cinema and television from the 1950s to 1990s will find this book a valuable source of information about a director whose work came to public attention with Free Cinema but who, unlike many of his peers in that movement did not take the Hollywood route to success. What emerges is a strong feeling for the character of the man as well as for a remarkable career in British cinema. The book will appeal to admirers, researchers and students alike. Making use of hitherto unseen original materials from Anderson’s extensive personal and professional records, it is most valuable as a study of how the films came about: the production problems involved, the collaborative input of others, as well as the completed films’ promotion and reception. It also offers a finely argued take on the whole issue of film authorship, and achieves the rare feat of being academically authoritative whilst also being completely accessible. It prompts renewed respect for the man and the artist and a desire to watch the films all over again.

Book British rural landscapes on film

Download or read book British rural landscapes on film written by Paul Newland and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British rural landscapes on film offers insights into how rural areas in Britain have been represented on film, from the silent era, through both world wars, and on into the twenty-first century. It is the first book to exclusively deal with representations of the British countryside on film. The contributors demonstrate that the countryside has provided Britain (and its constituent nations and regions) with a dense range of spaces in which cultural identities have been (and continue to be) worked through. British rural landscapes on film demonstrates that British cinema provides numerous examples of how national identity and the identity of the countryside have been partly constructed through filmic representation, and how British rural films can allow us to further understand the relationship between the cultural identities of specific areas of Britain and the landscapes they inhabit.

Book I Am Not a Number

Download or read book I Am Not a Number written by Alex Cox and published by Oldacastle Books. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enormously puzzling TV series The Prisoner has developed a rapt cult following, and has often been described as "surreal" or "Kafkaesque." In I Am (Not) a Number, Cox takes an opposing view. While the series has surreal elements, he believes it provides the answers to all the questions which have confounded viewers: who is Number 6? Who runs The Village? Who—or what—is Number 1? According to Cox, the key is to view the series in the order in which the episodes were made, not in the order of the UK or US television screenings. In this book he does exactly that, and provides an entirely original and controversial "explanation" for what is perhaps the best, and certainly the most perplexing, TV series of all time.
