She acted, sang and danced her way into the hearts of millions-and she was only five. For four years in row, she was the number one box office star, beating out the likes of Clark Gable, Joan Crawford and Gary Cooper. She was Shirley Temple. The "Shirley Temple Movie Poster Book" presents, for the first time and in full color, nearly 50 rare movie posters from Temple's films, including those from her mid-to-late teens and foreign versions.Temple's film career began in 1932 when she was cast in a series of one reel and two reel short subjects. Those shorts led to various bit and small roles in feature length films. Her big breakthrough was her performance in "Stand Up and Cheer" (1933). That resulted in her first starring feature, "Bright Eyes" (1934), which included her signature song, "On the Good Ship Lollipop." In the years that followed, Temple became a child superstar during the Great Depression and later, a cultural icon. In 1939, her popularity ultimately declined. In her mid-to-late teens, Temple appeared in more than a dozen films, including "The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer" (1947) with Cary Grant. She retired from motion pictures in 1950 at the age of 22.The "Shirley Temple Movie Poster Book" is a colorful tribute to a huge child star that captured the affections of millions around the world. 62 Pages/Color on White Paper

Book excerpt: "Clark Gable is a man de-classed. You can't guess in any way where he came from or what he was." Frank Taylor, producer of Gable's last film, The Misfits (1961), said this of the man who, to many people, will forever be Southern gentleman Rhett Butler of Gone with the Wind. This work tells Gable's life story, from his birth in 1901 in Cadiz, Ohio, to his death in 1960 in Hollywood. It chronicles his stage career, and of course gives information on every one of his films. His family background, his development as a person, the many romances including five marriages, and his relationships with friends and co-workers are all explored in detail. The sources used and the bibliography are fully annotated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the very beginning of Clark Gable's screen career, the life of the glamorous film star came under the scrutiny of the camera. While audiences are familiar with the public Gable as seen through the studio lens, the private Gable as seen in photos taken by members of the public, friends, and family is much less known. This collection of candid photographs, many of them published here for the first time, has been compiled by biographer Chrystopher J. Spicer from his archives and from sources around the world. As with Spicer's acclaimed centenary biography Clark Gable (McFarland, 2002), this volume provides rare insight into the life of the man behind the star.

Book Clark Gable

Download or read book Clark Gable written by Warren G. Harris and published by Crown Archetype. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clark Gable arrived in Hollywood after a rough-and-tumble youth, and his breezy, big-boned, everyman persona quickly made him the town’s king. He was a gambler among gamblers, a heavy drinker in the days when everyone drank seemingly all the time, and a lover to legions of the most attractive women in the most glamorous business in the world, including the great love of his life, Carole Lombard. In this well-researched and revealing biography, Warren G. Harris gives an exceptionally acute portrait of one of the most memorable actors in the history of motion pictures—whose intimates included such legends as Marilyn Monroe, Joan Crawford, Loretta Young, David O. Selznick, Jean Harlow, Judy Garland, Lana Turner, Spencer Tracy, and Grace Kelly—as well as a vivid sense of the glamour and excess of mid-century Hollywood.

Book When We Were Colored Vintage Movie Posters 1941 1946 Vol 3

Download or read book When We Were Colored Vintage Movie Posters 1941 1946 Vol 3 written by Al Blue and published by . This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the continuation of the series When we were Colored. Third installment of the collection. I hope that the earlier volumes were helpful. My job is only to find, compile and organize. This early film history can never be forgotten or lost. Even as I write these words, some of our earliest known film works are vanishing. Hopefully my effort will help our youth take a look back at some of the good things about the so called "good old days."This book is a collection of some of the early films/movies and shorts. Directed, produced, starring, featuring African Americans. Or Persons of Color. The time frame is the turn of the century. Up until the early 1960's. The genre was known as Race Films or Race Movies. During this time period America was still going through the Jim Crow and just out of Slavery complex. Movie theaters were set up based on skin color. For example if you were Black then you had to attend a Black or Colored theater. The same would apply if you were White. This in turn also caused a separation in the way movies were made. By having such a cultural divide the movies of the time would reflect the same. Just imagine if you will, if you have a White Clark Gable. Then of course you would also have a Black Clark Gable. This was totally noticeable in the film world. Some of the posters in this book will reflect this feeling and concept. This is a brief collection of some of the posters, promo material and Lobby cards from that era. i hope that you enjoy this collection as much as I have. I have tried to list the films in chronological order. Based on availability and documented evidence. Some of the images may appear grainy or of low resolution. If that is the case, that means that was the only available image I could find at the time of the printing of this book. In some cases only Lobby cards are Shown. That would mean that no known poster exist. If this book is well received by you, the public. I will continue my historical journey. I will continue to do more research and compile more Vintage posters, promo material and Lobby cards. Thanks to everyone that helped me on this long and tedious endeavor. We can never forget the pioneers of Early cinema. Lincoln film company, Norman Studios, Oscar Micheuax and we can not leave out Thomas Edison. Film has something magical about it. Allowing time to be frozen, If only for that brief moment. See you in volume # 4

Book Hollywood Movie Stills

Download or read book Hollywood Movie Stills written by Joel Waldo Finler and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe . . . it is through the eye of the stills camera that we experience and recall some of the cinema's most memorable events and faces. Still images are so powerful that they can easily pass for actual scenes from the movies they represent—rather than separately posed, lighted, and photographed shots that may not even find their way into the finished film. This classic study traces the origin of stills photography during the silent era and the early development of the star system, to the rise of the giant studios in the 1930s and their eventual decline. Finler focuses on the photographers, on the stars they photographed, and on many key films and filmmakers. Hollywood Movie Stills is illustrated by hundreds of rare and unusual stills from the author's own collection, including not only portraits and scene stills but production shots, behind-the-scenes photos, poster art, calendar art, leg shots, photo collages, and trick shots. There are also photos showing the stars' private lives and special events in Hollywood, all produced in vast numbers by the great studios in their heyday.
