Download or read book African Water Resource Database Technical manual and workbook Technical manual written by Jeff Jenness and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African Water Resource Database (AWRD) is a set of data and custom-designed tools, combined in a geographic information system (GIS) analytical framework, aimed at facilitating responsible inland aquatic resource management with a focus on inland fisheries and aquaculture. It thus provides a valuable instrument to promote food security. The AWRD data archive includes an extensive collection of datasets covering the African continent, including: surface waterbodies, watersheds, aquatic species, rivers, political boundaries, population density, soils, satellite imagery and many other physiographic and climatological data. This technical paper is the second of two publications about the AWRD, and it includes a technical manual for spatial analysts and a workbook for university students and teachers. The first part of this technical paper is available separately (ISBN 9789251057407).

Book Freshwater Fish Distribution

Download or read book Freshwater Fish Distribution written by Tim M. Berra and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more than 29,000 species, fishes are the most diverse group of vertebrates on the planet. Of that number, more than 12,000 species are found in freshwater ecosystems, which occupy less than 1 percent of the Earth’s surface and contain only 2.4 percent of plant and animal species. But, on a hectare-for-hectare basis, freshwater ecosystems are richer in species than more extensive terrestrial and marine habitats. Examination of the distribution patterns of fishes in these fresh waters reveals much about continental movements and climate changes and has long been critical to biogeographical studies and research in ecology and evolution. Tim Berra’s seminal resource, Freshwater Fish Distribution, maps the 169 fish families that swim in fresh water around the world. Each family account includes the class, subclass, and order; a pronunciation guide to the family name; life cycle information; and interesting natural history facts. Each account is illustrated, many with historical nineteenth-century woodcuts. Now available in paperback, this heavily cited work in ichthyology and biogeography will serve as a reference for students, a research support for professors, and a helpful guide to tropical fish hobbyists and anglers.

Book Current Frontiers in Cryopreservation

Download or read book Current Frontiers in Cryopreservation written by Igor Katkov and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-03-14 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost a decade has passed since the last textbook on the science of cryobiology, Life in the Frozen State, was published. Recently, there have been some serious tectonic shifts in cryobiology which were perhaps not seen on the surface but will have a profound effect on both the future of cryobiology and the development of new cryopreservation methods. We feel that it is time to revise the previous paradigms and dogmas, discuss the conceptually new cryobiological ideas, and introduce the recently emerged practical protocols for cryopreservation. The present books, "Current Frontiers in Cryobiology" and "Current Frontiers in Cryopreservation" will serve the purpose. This is a global effort by scientists from 27 countries from all continents and we hope it will be interesting to a wide audience.

Book Emerging Sustainable Aquaculture Innovations in Africa

Download or read book Emerging Sustainable Aquaculture Innovations in Africa written by Ndakalimwe Naftal Gabriel and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-11 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book presents the emerging sustainable innovations in all areas of aquaculture in Africa with a view to create an opportunity whereby scientific outputs and recommendations can be endorsed for improved aquaculture outputs towards poverty alleviation and food security on the continent. Food insecurity and poverty are some of the challenges faced on the African continent. These challenges are further exacerbated by the growing human population and the impacts of climate change. Today, aquaculture has become one of the fastest food producing sectors in the world, with the potential to contribute significantly to food security and poverty alleviation in developing countries. In Africa, aquaculture is at an infant stage, however, many African countries have recognized the potential roles of aquaculture in food security, poverty alleviation and conservation of aquatic resources through their commitment to achieve the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals. The book reviews and synthesize research work from these thematic areas across Africa and provide a unique perspective on the emerging aquaculture innovations and illustrate how aquaculture practices could be feasible and cost effective while promoting social and environmental sustainability. The book also draws from global discussions on sustainable aquaculture practices and provides recommendations on what is feasible for Africa. This book is a great tool for the university students, scholars, aquaculture farmers, investors, and policymakers to understand the scientific based sustainable aquaculture innovations from an African perspective. This book is focused on SDG 2 and SDG 14.

Book Aquatic Physiology Environmental Pollution Nanotoxicology and Phytoremediation

Download or read book Aquatic Physiology Environmental Pollution Nanotoxicology and Phytoremediation written by Alaa El-Din Hamid Sayed and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2021-01-22 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Topic is part of the Aquatic Physiology, Environmental Pollution, Nanotoxicology and Phytoremediation series: Aquatic Physiology, Environmental Pollution, Nanotoxicology and Phytoremediation, Volume II Environmental pollution as a result of increasing industrialization is a major problem worldwide. The toxicity of the chemicals, hazards, radiation, and environmental stressor to the aquatic fauna was studied. Although, recently, the excess levels of wastes discharged in water caused severe toxicity in aquatic environments and their fauna, still there is some shortage in the nanotoxicology and phytoremediation studies. So, the aim of this Research Topic is to create some knowledge about the environmental pollution and remediation in aquatic environment in collaboration with experts in physiology, biochemistry, endocrinology, morpho-histology of aquatic fauna. The relation between physiology and other research fields is strong enough as all researchers in biology field use some extent physiological parameters to evaluate the organisms’ health status in normal and stressful conditions. In addition, physiology with endocrinology and neurology can provide a contribution on the endocrine stress response of aquatic vertebrates and regulate the responses of vertebrates to stressors. Whilst the physiology of most aquatic animals has been well studied, not many articles provide sufficient data that helps understanding the common bases of the stress response after exposure to environmental pollutants and mechanisms of action. Such approach needs to be taken both in terms of comparative responses among vertebrates but also among classes or orders within groups of vertebrates. Another aspect that has not been sufficiently approached so far is physiological stress response in relation to immunity, growth, reproduction or behavior and embryology of the aquatic organisms, which expands the knowledge on the interactions between physiological systems to build an overall stress response.
