Download or read book The Laws and Legal System of a Free Market Cuba written by Matias F. Travieso-Diaz and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1996-11-25 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The re-entry of foreign-based businesses into Cuba will require a complete overhaul of Cuba's laws and legal institutions. It will also require enactment of major new legislation there, designed to enable and facilitate modern business transactions. Travieso-Diaz identifies these necessary legal, political, and economic changes, integrating legal and economic concepts in a way that businesspeople can understand and use in determining when it will be safe for them to reestablish business ties with Cuba. An important, readable resource for corporate management and their academic colleagues specializing in international business, trade, and investment. Using a practical, results-oriented approach, Travieso-Diaz organizes his book into three parts. In Part One, he discusses the specific political and economic changes that must occur and how U.S. policy must be modified to permit resumption of commerce between the two countries. Part Two covers the main legal concerns of a foreign business entity seeking to invest in Cuba, such as the resolution of property confiscation claims by U.S. and Cuban nationals, the enactment of a suitable foreign investment law, and the development of a program for the privatization of state-owned enterprises. Part Three surveys other legal issues important to foreign investors and to others who prefer trade with Cuba, rather than investment in it. Travieso-Diaz also provides checklists of changes that must occur in each area he covers—trade, investment, privatization—to provide business decisionmakers with a way of determining when it makes sense to enter the Cuban market. He also identifies the laws that the Cuban government must enact, and the most favorable form they should take, to encourage full participation from other nations.
Download or read book Reinventing the Cuban Sugar Agroindustry written by Jorge F. Pérez-López and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the key issues that faces Cuban policymakers today, and will continue to face them, is what steps to take in order to ensure the future of the sugar industry. In 2002, nearly one-half of the country's cultivated land was occupied by the 156 fully functional sugar mills, more than a dozen plants and refineries, and the complex transportation infrastructure brought about by the commerce. The loss of preferential markets for Cuban sugar that arose from the demise of the international socialist community constitutes a crisis that the Cuban government has only begun to address, with a radical restructuring plan that would foresee the reduction of sugar land and the elimination of about 100,000 jobs, for increased economic emphasis on tourism. The radical premise of this volume is that there is a future in the twenty-first century for a reinvented Cuban sugar agroindustry, responsive to market signals, organized around smaller and more agile production units, producing raw sugar as well as high value-added outputs, and using some of the facilities to produce ethanol and generate electricity. The editors have asked over a dozen recognized world experts on Cuban agroindustry to analyze specific topics and make recommendations that would not only reinvent an industry for effective transition to a free-market environment but that has the potential to reinvigorate the Cuban economy, providing employment opportunities and generating wealth for generations of Cubans to come.

Download or read book Paths for Cuba written by Scott Morgenstern and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2019-02-02 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cuban model of communism has been an inspiration—from both a positive and negative perspective—for social movements, political leaders, and cultural expressionists around the world. With changes in leadership, the pace of change has accelerated following decades of economic struggles. The death of Fidel Castro and the reduced role of Raúl Castro seem likely to create further changes, though what these changes look like is still unknown. For now, Cuba is opening in important ways. Cubans can establish businesses, travel abroad, access the internet, and make private purchases. Paths for Cuba examines Cuba’s internal reforms and external influences within a comparative framework. The collection includes an interdisciplinary group of scholars from around the world to explore reforms away from communism.
