Book Democratic Participation in Rural Tanzania and Zambia

Download or read book Democratic Participation in Rural Tanzania and Zambia written by Satu Riutta and published by Firstforumpress. This book was released on 2009 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Satu Riutta asks whether civic education initiatives - to which huge sums of donor funds and effort are devoted annually - actually promote political participation among the rural poor in nascent democracies. Does raising awareness about citizen rights and responsibilities increase participation? Are the effects of civic education greatest on collective or individual forms of participation? Do women respond differently than men? Drawing on a rich set of original data from villages in Tanzania and Zambia, Riutta casts new light on both the empowering effects and the limitations of civic education in the context of participatory development and democratization" -- Publisher's description.

Book Government of Development

Download or read book Government of Development written by Leander Schneider and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What drives state officials to force development projects on resisting "beneficiary" populations? In his new analysis of the Tanzanian state's 1960s and 1970s campaign to settle the country's rural population in socialist villages, Leander Schneider traces the discourses and practices that authorized state officials to direct the lives of peasants—by coercive means if necessary. Government of Development shows that the practices constituting this project's mode of government far exceeded political elites' pursuit of their own narrow interests, the go-to explanation for many accounts of similar instances of authoritarian rule and developmental failures in Africa and beyond.

Book The Political Economy of Tanzania

Download or read book The Political Economy of Tanzania written by Michael F. Lofchie and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2014-01-16 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since gaining independence, the United Republic of Tanzania has enjoyed relative stability. More recently, the nation transitioned peacefully from "single-party democracy" and socialism to a multiparty political system with a market-based economy. But Tanzania's development strategies—based on the leading economic ideas at the time of independence—also opened the door for unscrupulous dealmaking among political elites and led to economic decline in the 1960s and 1970s that continues to be felt today. Indeed, the shift to a market-oriented economy was motivated in part by the fiscal interests of government profiteers. The Political Economy of Tanzania focuses on the nation's economic development from 1961 to the present, considering the global and domestic factors that have shaped Tanzania's economic policies over time. Michael F. Lofchie presents a compelling analysis of the successes and failures of a country whose postcolonial history has been deeply influenced by high-ranking members of the political elite who have used their power to advance their own economic interests. The Political Economy of Tanzania offers crucial lessons for scholars and policy makers with a stake in Africa's future.

Download or read book Civil Society Responses to Changing Civic Spaces written by Kees Biekart and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-24 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book contributes to thriving debates in academic as well as professional circles about the role of civil society in shrinking civic spaces, rising authoritarianism and right-wing populism, conflicts, fragile states, and most lately, the global COVID-19 pandemic. This is one of the first books to address the implications of changing civic spaces for civil society organizations worldwide. It offers a unique overview of how social movements and civil society groups in very different settings are responding to state-imposed restrictions of basic civic freedoms. The authors are all experts in the field, and their analyses are based on original and onsite research. This unique book also contributes to a better understanding of the conceptualizations and practices of civil society. It is of keen interest to academic scholars, students, civil society practitioners, and policy makers in the field of international development research and civil society action.

Book Pragmatic Faith and the Tanzanian Lutheran Church

Download or read book Pragmatic Faith and the Tanzanian Lutheran Church written by Amy Stambach and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-11-09 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pragmatic Faith and the Tanzanian Lutheran Church: Bishop Erasto N. Kweka’s Life and Work examines the operations and organization of the Tanzanian Lutheran church through the life and times of its longest serving diocesan bishop, Erasto N. Kweka. Amy Stambach and Aikande Kwayu develop the concept of pragmatic faith, belief-in-practice, to analyze the integration of religious experience, institutionalism, and doctrine or orthodoxy. Pragmatic faith breaks down the lingering binary found in anthropological studies of Christianity between transcendental experience and pragmatic struggle, and between religious revival as rupture or continuity. Stambach and Kwayu analyze the instrumental use of religion in practice, as well as its socially mobilized potential for revelation and transformation. A key analytic agenda of this book is to illuminate how a church that retains the organizational and ritual forms of a European mission church "became" culturally localized over time and yet, paradoxically, also existed pre-colonially. Accordingly, this book offers detailed and ethnographically-grounded perspective on how leaders and laypeople affiliated with the Tanzanian Lutheran church connect the church with other significant institutions, not only the state and the government, but also descent groups, extended families, self-help groups, and existing civic organizations, in order to live meaningfully.
