Book Neighbourhoods in Urban India

Download or read book Neighbourhoods in Urban India written by Sadan Jha and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: '...a brilliant exploration of urbanism between the concept city and the lived city.... The volume focuses on urban life lived between home and the world, institutions and experiences, representations and affects.... Its fascinating range of empirically rich and analytically sophisticated excavations of neighbourhoods make the volume a must-have in the bookshelf on South Asian urban studies.' -Gyan Prakash, Princeton University 'A must-read for those who wish to study the micro aspects of contemporary urbanity.' -Sujata Patel, Savitribai Phule Pune University 'This book is a powerful addition to the study of Indian urbanism.' -Ravi Sundaram, Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) In the last couple of decades, the global South, in general, and India, in particular, have witnessed a massive growth of cities. In India, more than one-third of its population lives in cities. However, urban development, growth and expansion are not merely about infrastructures and enlargement of cityscapes. This edited volume focuses on neighbourhoods, their particularities and their role in shaping our understanding of the urban in India. It locates Indian experiences in the larger context of the global South and seeks to decentre the dominant Euro-American discourse of urban social life. Neighbourhoods in Urban India: In Between Home and the City offers an understanding of neighbourhoods as changing socio-spatial units in their specific regional settings by underlining the way value regimes (religiosity and subjectivities) give neighbourhoods their social meanings and stereotypes. It unpacks discourses and knowledge practices, such as planning, architecture and urban discourses of governance. It further discloses the linkages and disjunctures between the social practices of neighbourhoods and the language, logic and experiences of dwelling, housing, urban planning and governance, and focuses on the particularities and heterogeneities of neighbourhoods and neighbourliness.

Book excerpt: There is little documented mapping of conflict prior to the Renaissance period, but, from the 17th century onwards, military commanders and strategists began to document the wars in which they were involved and later, to use mapping to actually plan the progress of a conflict. Using contemporary maps, this sumptuous new volume covers the history of the mapping of war on land and shows the way in which maps provide a guide to the history of war. Content includes: The beginnings of military mapping up to 1600 including the impact of printing and the introduction of gunpowder The seventeenth century: The focus is on maps to illustrate war, rather than as a planning tool and the chapter considers the particular significance of maps of fortifications. The eighteenth century: The growing need for maps on a world scale reflects the spread of European power and of transoceanic conflict between Europeans. This chapter focuses in particular on the American War of Independence. The nineteenth century: Key developments included contouring and the creation of military surveying. Subjects include the Napoleonic Wars and the American Civil War The twentieth century including extended features on the First and Second World Wars including maps showing trench warfare and aerial reconnaissance. Much of the chapter focuses on the period from 1945 to the present day including special sections on the Vietnam War and the Gulf Wars.

Book Urban Growth Analysis and Remote Sensing

Download or read book Urban Growth Analysis and Remote Sensing written by Basudeb Bhatta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-06-19 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents research conducted on the analysis of urban growth and sprawl by using remote sensing data and GIS techniques. The research was conducted between 1980-2010 in the city of Kolkata, India. The aim of the research was to use metrics that were less demanding in terms of data and computation than normal metrics. However, it has been found that most of them were inferior in capturing insights of urban sprawl. For this book, some of these metrics have therefore been modified and new ones are proposed. The research focuses on problems associated with the analysis of urban growth by using remote sensing data from a technological perspective.

Book Humane Approach to Urban Planning

Download or read book Humane Approach to Urban Planning written by Priya Choudhary and published by Copal Publishing Group. This book was released on 2017-02-07 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is an effort to evolve and present a humane approach for urban planning practices in India. The planning approach followed in India, mostly, ignores the cultural peculiarities, habits, preferences of Indian users. This is mainly because the city planning –preparation of development plans – is based on the planning norms formulated in Europe or North America. Due to socioeconomic, demographic and cultural differences in Indian context, the Indian users and their preferences are very much different. It may be useful to incorporate culture-specific user aspects and evolve a humane approach to city planning in India. The consideration of user preferences will not only reduce conflicting situations in urban areas due to non-congruence between planning principles adopted and principles of urbanism rooted in the place, but will also help to develop living social environments in developing cities. Hence in the book, a study about user preferences is presented. It brought out few facts about the peculiarities of Indian users, their preferences and Indian principles of urbanism, which is discussed in the book. The study establishes the fact that there are culture-specific user preferences in Indian context. It further evolves framework for humane approach to deal evolving built environments in urban India.
