Book Spatial Analysis of Liberia s Transport Connectivity and Potential Growth

Download or read book Spatial Analysis of Liberia s Transport Connectivity and Potential Growth written by Atsushi Iimi and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberia has been influenced by the Ebola crisis since 2014, but the economy is now recovering quickly. Still, significant challenges lie ahead. Agriculture, an important sector that employs approximately half of the labor force, still has a weak growth trajectory. Many rural people are not well connected to markets and live below the poverty line. To use limited resources effectively, strategic planning and prioritization of public investment are essential. Particularly, the Ebola crisis revealed the vulnerability of the country's transport connectivity and health systems. This book analyzes the country's transport connectivity, identifying the existing bottlenecks and possible economic potentials. By taking advantage of the country's first-ever georeferenced road network data, the analysis casts light on various aspects of connectivity, such as rural accessibility, market access, access to port and health facilities and multimodal connectivity, including cabotage. It is shown that transport connectivity is crucial to increasing agricultural production, stimulating agglomeration economies, and supporting people's access to health care services. Significant resources are likely to be required to meet the existing gap. The book estimates the financial needs by development objective and discusses important policy issues, including the possibility of public-private partnerships to finance transport infrastructure.

Book Searching for Normal in the Wake of the Liberian War

Download or read book Searching for Normal in the Wake of the Liberian War written by Sharon Alane Abramowitz and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of Liberia's thirteen-year civil war, the devastated population struggled to rebuild their country and come to terms with their experiences of violence. During the first decade of postwar reconstruction, hundreds of humanitarian organizations created programs that were intended to heal trauma, prevent gendered violence, rehabilitate former soldiers, and provide psychosocial care to the transitioning populace. But the implementation of these programs was not always suited to the specific mental health needs of the population or easily reconciled with the broader aims of reconstruction and humanitarian peacekeeping, and psychiatric treatment was sometimes ignored or unevenly integrated into postconflict humanitarian health care delivery. Searching for Normal in the Wake of the Liberian War explores the human experience of the massive apparatus of trauma-healing and psychosocial interventions during the first five years of postwar reconstruction. Sharon Alane Abramowitz draws on extensive fieldwork among the government officials, humanitarian leaders, and an often-overlooked population of Liberian NGO employees to examine the structure and impact of the mental health care interventions, in particular the ways they were promised to work with peacekeeping and reconstruction, and how the reach and effectiveness of these promises can be measured. From this courageous ethnography emerges a geography of trauma and the ways it shapes the lives of those who give and receive care in postwar Liberia.

Book Liberia s Political Economy

Download or read book Liberia s Political Economy written by Stephen H. Gobewole and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since it was founded for freed blacks in the early 1800s, Liberia has been a country of extremes, whether comparing wealth and poverty; the lifestyles of urban elites and rural tribal communities; or corrupt national government and familial trust. This book uses Liberia’s history as the background and ongoing source of the current political and social situations, as revealed by Afrobarometer data. The study considers the ethnicity, gender, and residential location of Liberian citizens and their attitudes regarding the country’s rule of law, state authority and democratic accountability – it’s government and economic health. After presenting the history and the current data, the author makes recommendations for changing the future of this African nation. If implemented, these changes could have a profound and positive effect on the future of this country that is rated as the third-poorest in the world.

Years later, and the followings of each of the original warriors have become clans. The clans have grown and trained new warriors over time, creating the driving force in all the universe. Here are four people now, training to follow in the ways of one particular wolf. The wolf that ended it all in the first place, the Blackwolf. This is the start of their journey, the beginning of their training. Gregor Holden, a Prince, who's sense of duty is equaled only by his lust for adventure. Candace Orthon, a legacy who's father is a Blackwolf, who's gradfather was a Blackwolf, and who will be a Blackwolf if it kills her. Ran Grastle, already an accomplished warrior in his own right. He's on the run for a committing a crime to exact justice and cares very little for the clan or anyone else. Xesca, a child of the last planet that the Blackwolf attacked. She has come to learn his ways, his style, so that no one can ever attack her planet again. "These four. If no one else, let these four progress."

Download or read book The Dung Beetles of Liberia written by Daniel V. Meier Jr. and published by BQB Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-01 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberia’s oligarchy: The beginning of the end. 2019 Grand Prize Winner - Red City Review Based on the remarkable true account of a young American who landed in Liberia in 1961. *****The story weaves drama, dark comedy, and romance throughout a rich tapestry of narration - The San Francisco Book Review KEN VERRIER IS NOT HAPPY, NOR AT PEACE. He is experiencing the turbulence of Ishmael and the guilt of his brother's death. His sudden decision to drop out of college and del with his demons shocks his family, his friends, and especially his girlfriend, soon to have been his fiancee. His destination: Liberia - The richest country in Africa both in monetary wealth and in natural resources. NOTHING COULD HAVE PREPARED HIM FOR THE EXPERIENCES HE WAS ABOUT TO LIVE THORUGH. Ken quickly realizes that he has arrived in a place where he understands very little of what is considered normal, where the dignity of life has little meaning, and where he can trust no one. Flying into the interior bush as a transport piolot, Ken learns quickly. He witnesses, first-hand, the disparate lives of the Liberian "Country People? and the "Congo People" also known as Americo-Liberians. These descendants of President Monroe's American Colonization Policy that sent freed slaves back to Africa in the 1800's have set up a strict hierarchical society not unlike the antebellum South. Author Dan Meier describes Ken's many escapades, spanning from horrifying to whimical, with engaging and fast-moving narrative that ultimately describes a society upon which the wealthy are feeding and in which the poor are being buried. It's a novel that will stay with you long after the last word has been read.
