Book excerpt: This new, thoroughly updated fifth edition of Bradt's Serbia remains the most acclaimed guide available to a country which in recent years has welcomed an increasing number of foreign tourists to discover its attractive rolling countryside, lively cities, excellent food and friendly people. Development of tourism infrastructure continues apace in Serbia and this new edition reflects all the changes and trends of recent years, including Belgrade's increasing popularity as a weekend break destination, the continued evolution and rising quality of accommodation across all price brackets in both the capital and beyond, the development of Belgrade's Savamala riverfront area, the rise in popularity of bird-watching holidays, the possibilities for wine tours, and the increase in visitors to the EXIT festival held annually in Novi Sad and to the Guca trumpet festival in central Serbia. Particularly notable since the previous edition is Serbia's dramatic improvement in English-language facilities for visitors, with many towns and cities now having tourist information centres with helpful staff, all of which are detailed in this guide. Written by an expert author, the Bradt guide to Serbia offers up-to-date background information on the country's geography, history, economy, politics and people, as well as a strong emphasis on culture and the arts - music, literature, cinema and art - and on natural history, including a thorough overview of Serbia's best wildlife sites. This guide recommends facilities and places of interest that will hold appeal for all types of visitor - from impecunious young travellers seeking a fun-filled city break to older visitors who prefer a slower pace and wish to immerse themselves in local tradition. Despite burgeoning interest, Serbia remains one of the least known corners of Europe. With the Bradt guide you will be able to discover all this intriguing country has to offer.

Download or read book Spomenik Monument Database written by Donald Niebyl and published by Fuel Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spomenik - the Serbo-Croat/Slovenian word for monument - refers to the pioneering abstract memorials built in Josip Tito's Yugoslavia between the 1960s and the 1990s, marking the horror of occupation by Axis forces and the triumph of their defeat during World War II. Through these imaginative creations, a forward-looking socialist society, free of ethnic tensions, was envisaged. This publication brings together more than 80 examples of these stunning brutalist monuments. Each has been extensively photographed and researched by the author to make this book the most comprehensive survey available of this obscure and fascinating architectural phenomenon. A fold-out map on the reverse of the dust jacket shows the exact location of each spomenik using GPS coordinates.

Download or read book Workers and revolution in Serbia written by Martin Upchurch and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a refreshing new analysis of the role of workers both in Tito’s Yugoslavia and in the subsequent Serbian revolution against Miloševic in October 2000. The authors argue that Tito and the Communist leadership of Yugoslavia saw self-management as a modernising project to compete with the West, and as a disciplining tool for workers in the enterprise. The socialist ideals of self-management were subsequently corrupted by Yugoslavia’s turn to the market. The authors then move on to examining the central role of ordinary workers in overthrowing the nationalist regime of Miloševic and present an account which runs contrary to many descriptions of 'labour weakness' in post-Communist states. Organised labour should be studied as a movement in and of itself rather than as a passive object of external forces. Two labour movement waves have emerged under post-Communism, the first an expression of desire for democracy, the second as a collaboration and clientelism. A third wave, against the ravages of neoliberalism, is only just emerging.
