This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of the Citrus Industry of Italy The Italian citrus industry is an ancient one, and evidence exists that Citrus of some type or other has been planted in this region since Roman times, Many Italian lemon orchards are 75 Years of age, with individual trees on root stock at least 100 years old. Since all of the Italian orchards are cultivated by hand, greatest attention is paid to the details of cultivation and tree care, and even the old trees in the orchard seem to have excellent vigor. The climatic conditions under which citrus is produced in Italy and Sicily are practically ideal, the climate being very gentle and mild for most seasons of the year. Book Citrus Industry of Surinam Classic Reprint

Download or read book Citrus Industry of Surinam Classic Reprint written by Joseph Henry Burke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citrus Industry of Surinam Surinam, Netherlands Guiana, is on the northeast coast of South America, only 4 degrees above the equator. The Dutch colonized it in 1630, having received it from the British in settlement for New York. Until 1863, when the slaves were liberated, Surinam had a prosperous plantation agriculture producing coffee, sugar, cotton, and other crops for world markets. But when slave labor was no longer available, agricultural exports declined to secondary importance, and now Surinam's most important export is bauxite. Though Surinam still has a few specialty export cr0ps such as rice, coffee, cocoa, citrus, and coco nuts and their products, it has no large agricultural indus tries. These specialty crops probably represent the limit of agricultural opportunity in Surinam. Because of the great difficulties involved in combatting the jungle and draining the soil, most agriculture will continue to be primarily for sub sistence. Thus, in Surinam, citrus production on the subsistence level would be natural; but the production and marketing of citrus that can meet world competition in export markets presents many problems. Book Citrus Processing in Brazil Classic Reprint

Download or read book Citrus Processing in Brazil Classic Reprint written by Shackford Pitcher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citrus Processing in Brazil The fortunes of the Brazilian commercial citrus industry were closely identified with the fresh export market for many decades. In 1963, however, the creation of the first modern export-oriented processing plant added a new and profitable dimension to the industry. This development closely followed the 1962 freeze in Florida, prior to which the United States was by far the most important exporter of orange juice concentrate. Many countries, including Brazil, were encouraged by the high prices following the Florida freeze to establish or expand processing industries. While exports from some countries have declined in recent years as production resumed its upward trend in Florida, the production and exportation of concentrated orange juice in Brazil has moved ahead at an unprecedented rate. The availability of abundant supplies of processing fruit plus the ability to produce a competitive product has catapulted Brazil into the forefront as supplier of orange juice concentrate to the world's markets. An adequate supply of oranges for the Brazilian processing plants, almost all of which are located in the State of $50 Paulo, seems assured. Millions of trees have been planted in recent seasons, and nurseries are prepared to supply many more at least over the next 3 years. If yields improve as anticipated, the prospect exists for a very substantial increase in production. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citrus Investigations Citrus is not native to America. Oranges were probably introduced into Florida when St. Augustine was founded in 1565. The early American settlers about two centuries later found, in various parts of Florida, wild seedling orange groves, which probably had developed from seed dropped by the Indians. After Florida was ceded to the United States in 1821, sweet orange (citrus sinensis (linn.) Osbeck) seedling groves developed rapidly.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from 1903-'04, San Dimas Citrus Nurseries The destination of this shipment of California-grown Washing ton Navel orange trees is suggestive. For instanee, Sicily has a population of about and among her exports the orange and the lemon represent an annual value of the town of Messina has a population of some and exports citrus fruits to the value of and the essence of or ange, lemon, and Bergamot in the sum of Naples has half a million population, and exports worth of fruit; Sicilia, Which is the largest island in the Mediterranean, grows much fruit'in the warm and sheltered sections. Think of California Washington Navel trees nodding to the breeze in the presence of Mt. Etna, or casting their fragrance on the summer air on the historic ground where N ero fiddled and saw Rome burn, and Where Hannibal exercised his prowess as a warrior in the Punic wars. The exports of citrus fruits from Italy also afford a study in supply and demand. From them it can clearly be seen that citrus culture in this country is far from being overdone; quite to the contrary, it is only in the formative period. But to consider that California, the youngest citrus-producing country, should be ex porting citrus trees to the oldest, is certainly a compliment to our advanced methods. We believe that Mr. Teague can justly be considered the pioneer in this sort of enterprise, as he has re cently filled orders for South Africa, Australia, and other equally distant points. This not only affords a solace to our pride as a horticultural people, but gives strength to the conviction that our advantages are unequalled. - [from The Pomona Times.
