Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the United States, groups of individuals have been confronting the issues surrounding sexually explicit materials. Many have concurred in their perceptions of what is pornographic, have assessed pornography to be a problem our society must deal with, and have made organized efforts within their communities to stop or restrict the commercial availability of such materials. Citizens for Decency is an examination of two antipornography crusades, one in the Midwest and the other in the Southwest. It examines the evolution and impact of such crusades, the satisfaction derived from participating, and the relevant characteristics of the participants and their opponents. It is the first systematic, comprehensive, and theory-oriented study of antipornography crusades and one of the few studies that analyze movements to resist change. The book begins with the assumption that the term pornography is a value judgment and that the labeling of sexually explicit materials as “pornographic” can be adequately understood only in the wider context of sociological and psychological structures and processes. In approaching the antipornography crusades, Louis A. Zurcher and R. George Kirkpatrick gathered data by observation and document search and by interviews with persons well informed about and central to the crusades. Their examination of the organizations that directed the two movements is particularly extensive, and their comparative analysis of the two organizations allows them to determine which features are the most important, how these characteristics interact, and what their relationship is to the symbolic crusade. Among their important findings, the authors show that antipornography crusaders are people discontent with their status who have mobilized to protect the dominance and prestige of their traditional life styles. The participants in the crusades are shown to differ from their opponents in a number of significant ways. In the final chapters, the authors analyze their findings with reference to social movement theory and offer predictions concerning future symbolic crusades.

Book Democracy Without Decency

Download or read book Democracy Without Decency written by William M. Epstein and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-10-20 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conservative attacks on the welfare system in the United States over the past several decades have put liberal defenders of poverty relief and social insurance programs on the defensive. In this no-holds-barred look at the reality of American social policy since World War II, William Epstein argues that this defense is not worth mounting—that the claimed successes of American social programs are not sustained by evidence. Rather than their failure being the result of inadequate implementation or political resistance stemming from the culture wars, these programs and their built-in limitations actually do represent what the vast majority of people in this country want them to be. However much people may speak in favor of welfare, the proof of what they really want is in the pudding of the social policies that are actually legislated. The stinginess of America’s welfare system is the product of basic American values rooted in the myth of “heroic individualism” and reinforced by a commitment to social efficiency, the idea that social services need to be minimal and compatible with current social arrangements.

Book The Decency Code The Leader s Path to Building Integrity and Trust

Download or read book The Decency Code The Leader s Path to Building Integrity and Trust written by James E. Lukaszewski and published by McGraw-Hill Education. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential guide to creating an honest, ethical workplace culture in any industry In The Manager’s Book of Decencies, Stephen Harrison showed how even the smallest gestures can produce big results and change the culture of an entire workforce. Now the author of that prescient bestseller has teamed up with Jim Lukaszewski, America’s Crisis Guru® to write the definitive guide to transforming or restoring your workplace into a showplace of honest, ethical behavior. Accountability, civility, compassion, empathy, honesty, humility, and principle: these are the seven characteristics embodied by every truly decent leader. The best organizations develop and maintain a civil culture, valuing ethical behavior, honesty, and integrity as much, or even more, than profitability. The Decency Code provides you with practical pathways to creating or restoring that type of culture. These strategies address the evolving workplace: flexible, fast-moving, delayered, virtual, unstable, out-of-balance, ambiguous, global, diverse, and ruthlessly competitive. Here are actionable tools and strategies to help you build your workplace on a new standard of honest, ethical behavior, along with informative case studies that examine the behavior of both ethical and unethical companies. Today’s climate of corporate cultural disorder needs a new type of leader, men and women who replace confusion with order, opaqueness with clarity, complexity with simplicity, hopelessness with confidence, greed with selflessness, and suspicion with trust. The common-sense prescriptions offered in The Decency Code can help you become the type of leader you wish to be—and effect the change you wish to see. This book is required reading for ethically conscious managers everywhere.
