Book excerpt: Charles Grant Blairfindie Allen (February 24, 1848 - October 25, 1899) was a Canadian science writer and novelist, educated in England. He was a public promoter of evolution in the second half of the nineteenth century. After leaving his professorship, in 1876 he returned to England, where he turned his talents to writing, gaining a reputation for his essays on science and for literary works. A 2007 book by Oliver Sacks cites with approval one of Allen's early articles, "Note-Deafness" (a description of what became known as amusia, published in 1878 in the learned journal Mind). Allen's first books dealt with scientific subjects, and include Physiological Æsthetics (1877) and Flowers and Their Pedigrees (1886).

Staffs in hand, clad in the short knickerbockers, the khaki shirts and the wide campaign hats that mark the Boy Scout all over the world, they were enough of a spectacle to draw the attention of the busy citizens of Liege, who stopped to watch them admiringly. Their scoutmaster, Armand Van Verde, had been addressing them. And now in the fading light of the late afternoon, he dismissed them."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Belgium: Its Cities, Vol. 1 For several years past I have devoted myself to collecting and arranging material for a set of books to embody the idea I had thus enter tained. I earnestly hope they may meet a want on the part of tourists, especially Americans, who, so far as my experience goes, usually come to Europe with an honest and reverent desire to learn from the Old World whatever of value it has to teach them, and who are prepared to take an amount of pains in turning their trip to good account which is both rare and praiseworthy. For such readers I shall call attention at times to other sources of information. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Belgian Life in Town and Country Classic Reprint

Download or read book Belgian Life in Town and Country Classic Reprint written by Demetrius C. Boulger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Belgian Life in Town and Country It is a fact, which cannot be explained away, that Flemings and Walloons have never in the long course of their combined history, which commenced with the close of feudalism, engaged in a racial war, and this absence of strife has left an abiding impression on their relations. The strongest link, however, in the chain that connects the two peoples of the South Netherlands is provided by identity of religion; so that the most fruitful cause of all human differences and quarrels has never arisen to create a feud between Flemings and Walloons. There is, consequently, every reason to conclude that the two races, which in the past never came into hostile collision, are now well content to perform their duties together, and to be known as Belgians. When people talk of the Belgians as a modern people, with a history of only seventy-four years, they should not forget that the Flemings have scarcely changed in character, and not at all in their tongue, since the days of the Plantagenets; and that the Walloons, of Liege at least, are very much what they were in the time of the prince-bishops. Book Belgium Old New Classic Reprint

Download or read book Belgium Old New Classic Reprint written by George Wharton Edwards and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-21 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Belgium Old New With wealth pouring in from all quarters, art natur ally followed in the wake of commerce. Nowhere was the cultivation of architecture more general than in Flan ders. Knowledge of the Middle Ages is so imperfect that little can be written with certainty about the men who designed and built the wondrous cathedrals and guild halls; but it is believed that these superb structures owe the1r origin to a great secret masonic league or guild, bound probably by religious vows, with headquarters in France and the Netherlands, and branches elsewhere in Europe. To a branch of this league are attributed the splendid buildings with which the Netherlands adorned the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. Chief among these buildings were the cathedrals of Flanders and Brabant (motley). Burgher opulence and energy are grandly and vigorously expressed in the secular buildings of these towns. For example, we have the Hall of the Cloth Makers (destroyed in at Ypres; Town Hall at Bruges, 1284; Council House at Bruges, 1377; Council House at Brussels, 1401 - 5 5; the still more magnificent Town Hall at Louvain, belonging to the second half of the fifteenth century; and that at Oudenarde, built in 1527 - (destroyed in 1915) (lubke's History of Art. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Brussels All of these cities, however, have this in common, and this it is which makes them so interesting: we know something of their general history, and something too of the intimate lives of the men and the women who inhabited them, five hundred years ago - how they were lodged and clothed, what they drank and ate, the way in which their food was dressed and their tables served, something of their distractions and their business pursuits, how they loved and hated, what they thought of this world, and what of the next.
