Book excerpt: The appearance of Margaret Atwood's first major collection of poetry marked the beginning of a truly outstanding career in Canadian and international letters. The voice in these poems is as witty, vulnerable, direct, and incisive as we've come to know in later works, such as Power Politics, Bodily Harm, and Alias Grace. Atwood writes compassionately about the risks of love in a technological age, and the quest for identity in a universe that cannot quite be trusted. Containing many of Atwood's best and most famous poems, The Circle Game won the 1966 Governor General's Award for Poetry and rapidly attained an international reputation as a classic of modern poetry. This beautiful edition of The Circle Game contains the complete collection, with an introduction by Sherrill E. Grace of the University of British Columbia.

Book The Circle

    Book Details:
  • Author : W. Somerset Maugham
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2018-05-05
  • ISBN : 9781718650329
  • Pages : 92 pages

Download or read book The Circle written by W. Somerset Maugham and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-05-05 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Circle is set in the fashionable drawing room of Aston-Adey, the Champion-Cheneys' house in Dorset. Maugham's plot, which may be unfamiliar, contains two triangles, each of a husband, wife, and lover. The first of these includes Clive, a cuckolded husband, Lady Kitty, his ex-wife, and Lord Porteous, her second husband. Thirty years before the start of the play, Lady Kitty ran off to Italy with Lord Porteous, leaving her husband and five-year-old son Arnold to their own devices. The play opens with the return of this now aged couple to England and a family reunion negotiated by Arnold's curious wife. To complicate matters, the earlier abandoned husband Clive intrudes upon the visiting couple, losing no chance to wreak hilarious verbal havoc. The second triangle, one of young people, consists of the stuffy MP and furniture collector Arnold, his lively but bored wife, and their pleasing house guest Teddie. Bringing matters full circle, Elizabeth and Teddie have fallen for each other. The central concern of the play thus becomes whether they will bolt like the lovers of thirty years ago. Maugham's hall of mirrors action wittily calls to mind the famous question: Do people learn anything from the past, or is the only lesson the past has to offer that people have never learned anything from it?

Book The Caucasian Chalk Circle

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bertolt Brecht
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2015-03-16
  • ISBN : 140816101X
  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book The Caucasian Chalk Circle written by Bertolt Brecht and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-16 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Student Edition of Brecht's classic dramatisation of the conflict over possession of a child features an extensive introduction and commentary that includes a plot summary, discussion of the context, themes, characters, style and language as well as questions for further study and notes on words and phrases in the text. It is the perfect edition for students of theatre and literature. Brecht projects an ancient Chinese story onto a realistic setting in Soviet Georgia. In a theme that echoes the Judgment of Solomon, two women argue over the possession of a child; thanks to the unruly judge, Azdak (one of Brecht's most vivid creations) natural justice is done and the peasant Grusha keeps the child she loves, even though she is not its mother. Written in exile in the United States during the Second World War, The Caucasian Chalk Circle is a politically-charged, much-revived and complex example of Brecht's epic theatre. This volume contains expert notes on the author's life and work, historical and political background to the play, photographs from stage productions and a glossary of difficult words and phrases. It features the acclaimed translation by James and Tania Stern with W. H. Auden.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “We have a collective responsibility—to bring about a more stable and more prosperous world” (Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund). It wouldn’t make headline news if a scientist declared that in today’s world, we are all connected and dependent on each other. But it would become a main feature if a scientist said there is a proven way we can not only benefit from our connectedness, but actually enjoy it. Completing the Circle: an empirically proven method for finding peace and harmony in life, presents precisely that. Over a period of four years, the Connection-Circle and Round-Table discussion formats have proven themselves as successful methods for resolving seemingly unsolvable conflicts, reassembling shattered relationships, and bringing together alienated families. These discussions have been taking place in the US, Europe, and Israel, all with resounding success. Now, for the first time, Dr. Laitman has written down the knowledge base of his successful method, and added easy-to-implement sample circles. As we try out these innovative circles, we will discover new depths in our connections with each other, and fresh ideas for managing our lives more peacefully and harmoniously both for ourselves and our loved ones.
