Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Roman Curia is the central body for the administration of the Roman Catholic Church. The structure and organization of the Curia are governed by Praedicate evangelium, issued by Pope Francis in 2022. The Curia is both difficult to understand and vitally important for the administration of the Church and the Vatican. Interest in the Curia has been growing since Francis' 2022 reform, and this book provides a historical, theological, and juridical explanation of the nature of the Roman Curia, highlighting its relationship to the Pope. It is intended as an overview of the Roman Curia and allied ecclesiastical institutions, like the Vatican and the Holy See, for those unfamiliar with their nature and operation. The book is divided into seven chapters. Chapter one explains the three terms that are often used interchangeably but refer to different entities: The Vatican City State, the Holy See and the Roman Curia. While chapter two offers a brief history of the Curia, chapter three focuses on the concrete steps that led to the production of PE, the principles and criteria that inspired it, the meaning of its title and its noteworthy innovations. Chapter four treats the theological self-understanding that underpins the Roman Curia as developed in PE. Chapter five concentrates on the Secretariat of State and the sixteen Dicasteries of the Roman Curia, offering a brief history and an examination of the juridical structures and responsibilities of each. In a similar way, Chapter six offers a brief historical note and reflection on the juridical competence of each of the institutions of justice of the Roman Curia. So too, Chapter seven reflects on the history and internal juridical ordering of the institutions of finance and other Offices of the Roman Curia"--

The book concluded with a searching assessment of how the Catholic faith will confront the immense challenges posed in the new millennium by the scientific community, by women questioning their role in the Church, and by those seeking reform of the strictures against abortion and contraception. • Author : J. A. Wylie
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2018-03
  • ISBN : 9781980435419
  • Pages : 407 pages

Download or read book The Papacy written by J. A. Wylie and published by . This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Papacy is one of most powerful institutions in the history of religion. During the medieval period it had the authority to condemn kings and queens, define what was Christian and what wasn't, and even organize huge military campaigns. But how did the Papacy rise to become this almost invincible seat of power? Where did it originate from? And from what source did it draw its legitimacy? James Aiken Wylie, the brilliant scholar of church history, casts his critical eye over the Papacy and uncovers the answers to these questions. Looking first at ancient Rome, Wylie studies how the Papacy emerged in the aftermath of the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. Wylie's work explores how the Papacy grew in power through the course of the Middle Ages as it worked to legitimize itself by allying with powerful rulers such as Charlemagne. The work and acts of some important individual popes, such as Gregory VII and Innocent III are studied in more detail, providing the reader with insight into what sort of men rose to the height of power in the Roman Catholic Church. Wylie exposes how the bureaucracy of the Papacy developed as the curia grew in power and the central ordinances and regulations of canon law were laid out. Particularly fascinating is Wylie's analysis of why the Papacy struggled to cope with the Protestant Reformation that erupted in the sixteenth century and tore Christianity in two. Indulgences and the concept of purgatory, as well as many other beliefs and actions, that were held and taken by the Papacy are questioned by Wylie through the course of the book. This is essential reading for anyone interested in the Papacy and how it has changed through the course of its long history. James Aitken Wylie was a Scottish historian of religion and a staunchly Presbyterian minister who had a critical view of the Catholic Church. He was a prolific writer and is most famous for his twenty-four book long The History of Protestantism, which was first published in 1878. Wylie died before completing his History of the Scottish Nation in 1890.

Book The Avignon Papacy Contested

Download or read book The Avignon Papacy Contested written by Unn Falkeid and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Avignon papacy (1309–1377) represented the zenith of papal power in Europe. The Roman curia’s move to southern France enlarged its bureaucracy, centralized its authority, and initiated closer contact with secular institutions. The pope’s presence also attracted leading minds to Avignon, transforming a modest city into a cosmopolitan center of learning. But a crisis of legitimacy was brewing among leading thinkers of the day. The Avignon Papacy Contested considers the work of six fourteenth-century writers who waged literary war against the Catholic Church’s increasing claims of supremacy over secular rulers—a conflict that engaged contemporary critics from every corner of Europe. Unn Falkeid uncovers the dispute’s origins in Dante’s Paradiso and Monarchia, where she identifies a sophisticated argument for the separation of church and state. In Petrarch’s writings she traces growing concern about papal authority, precipitated by the curia’s exile from Rome. Marsilius of Padua’s theory of citizen agency indicates a resistance to the pope’s encroaching power, which finds richer expression in William of Ockham’s philosophy of individual liberty. Both men were branded as heretics. The mystical writings of Birgitta of Sweden and Catherine of Siena, in Falkeid’s reading, contain cloaked confrontations over papal ethics and church governance even though these women were later canonized. While each of the six writers responded creatively to the implications of the Avignon papacy, they shared a concern for the breakdown of secular order implied by the expansion of papal power and a willingness to speak their minds.

Book A Companion to Early Modern Rome 1492 1692

Download or read book A Companion to Early Modern Rome 1492 1692 written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-02-04 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2020 Bainton Prize for Reference Works This volume, edited by Pamela M. Jones, Barbara Wisch, and Simon Ditchfield, focuses on Rome from 1492-1692, an era of striking renewal: demographic, architectural, intellectual, and artistic. Rome’s most distinctive aspects--including its twin governments (civic and papal), unique role as the seat of global Catholicism, disproportionately male population, and status as artistic capital of Europe--are examined from numerous perspectives. This book of 30 chapters, intended for scholars and students across the academy, fills a noteworthy gap in the literature. It is the only multidisciplinary study of 16th- and 17th-century Rome that synthesizes and critiques past and recent scholarship while offering innovative analyses of a wide range of topics and identifying new avenues for research. Committee's statement "The volume includes a multidisciplinary study of early modern Rome by focusing on the 16th and 17th centuries by re-examining traditional topics anew. This volume will be of tremendous use to scholars and students because its focus is very well conceptualized and organized, while still covering a breadth of topics. The authors celebrate Rome’s diversity by exploring its role not only as the seat of the Catholic church, but also as home to large communities of diplomats, printers, and working artisans, all of whom contributed to the city’s visual, material, and musical cultures". Book excerpt: The Chair of Saint Peter surveys the history of the papal office from the first century to the current papacy of Pope John Paul II. At the approach of the third millennium, the office of the papacy remains a vital sign of unity in the Catholic church and a link with the earliest church. But the papal office in its current form is the product of a long and conflicted history of evolution. The Chair of Saint Peter is an essential resource for future discussions about the shape of the church to come.
