Book excerpt: In Kincraft Todne Thomas explores the internal dynamics of community life among black evangelicals, who are often overshadowed by white evangelicals and the common equation of the “Black Church” with an Afro-Protestant mainline. Drawing on fieldwork in an Afro-Caribbean and African American church association in Atlanta, Thomas locates black evangelicals at the center of their own religious story, presenting their determined spiritual relatedness as a form of insurgency. She outlines how church members cocreate themselves as spiritual kin through what she calls kincraft—the construction of one another as brothers and sisters in Christ. Kincraft, which Thomas traces back to the diasporic histories and migration experiences of church members, reflects black evangelicals' understanding of Christian familial connection as transcending racial, ethnic, and denominational boundaries in ways that go beyond the patriarchal nuclear family. Church members also use their spiritual relationships to navigate racial and ethnic discrimination within the majority-white evangelical movement. By charting kincraft's functions and significance, Thomas demonstrates the ways in which black evangelical social life is more varied and multidimensional than standard narratives of evangelicalism would otherwise suggest.

Her job was to deliberately put drugs into the hands of selected types of users and collect money from the hands of well-know people. As a drug user, she found it entertaining watching others; it was easy to observe the habits of users as she worked the circle and business of drugs. When clergy who were drug users crossed her path, they were noticed immediately. As they hollered sermons and passed out in the pulpit, sometimes they were high and had been drinking, and enjoyed the attention. Pastor Alfred's death was a direct result of his dealing and use of the drug cocaine in several different styles and ways for decades. With church as the scenery behind the main business of drugs, church was perceived as the framework. He was apparent in producing his weekly paycheck and becoming his own best customer. They hired this particular secretary three times, fired her twice and then she quit, after winning a lawsuit for defamation of character. After becoming fully aware she was of no help to this church, she quit, nonetheless she continually gave praise the LORD.

Infidels and the Damn Churches explores the historical roots of this phenomenon from the 1880s to the First World War. Lynne Marks reveals that class and racial tensions fuelled irreligion in a world populated by embattled ministers, militant atheists, turn-of-the-century New Agers, rough-living miners, Asian immigrants, and church-going settler women. White, working-class men often arrived in the province alone and identified the church with their exploitative employers. At the same time, BC’s anti-Asian and anti-Indigenous racism meant that their “whiteness” alone could define them as respectable, without the need for church affiliation. Consequently, although Christianity retained major social power elsewhere, many people in BC found the freedom to forgo church attendance or espouse atheist views. This nuanced study of mobility, gender, masculinity, and family in settler BC offers new insights into BC’s distinctive culture and into the beginnings of what has become an increasingly dominant secular worldview across Canada.
