Book Church and State in the Maryland Colony Classic Reprint

Download or read book Church and State in the Maryland Colony Classic Reprint written by Ernest Lloyd Harris and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church and State in the Maryland Colony In the writing of this thesis none but the best authorities have been taken. Few Protestant writers have been consulted. Chiefly among those are Bancroft's "History of the United States," and Gardiner's "History of England." Among Catholic writers John Gilmary Shea's "History of the Catholic Church in the United States" is without doubt the best of its kind that has been produced. It is a magnificent work of 4 vol's and almost entirely free from prejudice. Spalding's "Miscellanea" is considered by all Catholics as good authority, but a careful perusal of its pages will convince the reader that it is unjustly bigoted. If we say that it is but a machine attacking the figure heads and institutions of Protestantism we would but assign it its true place. I wish to acknowledge the kindness of those in charge of the Heading Room and Manuscript Department of the British Museum. As every one knows who has had an opportunity of research in its halls, that for richness of its archives, methods, and convenience, it remains without an equal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church Life: In Colonial Maryland The author feels, however, that he has some special qualifications for this work. A Maryland Churchman by birth, he is proud of her tradi tions, and proud of her eminent position. He also feels the heartiest sympathy with that tone of Churchmanship which permeates all parts of the commonwealth, which had its origin in those days when the Church was the Church in' the minds and mouths of all, when dissent was a small faction worshipping in its chapels, and when the parson was the generally accepted presentation of Christ's duly ordained minister. That is Maryland Churchmanship; and it has been fostered and preserved through all the older rural districts of Maryland, where the old temples still stand, and where the children of a long line of fathers still occupy the soil. Another qualification also, he feels that he has in being the rector of one of the first parishes in Maryland; first, principally because it was created along with those that were laid out under the earliest act of establishment; first, because from that earlier day it has been blessed, almost without exception, with a long line of ministers who have furthered the kingdom and done no dishonor to their holy calling, the parish thus enjoying an even life of high tenor first, because those who worship within its sanctuary. Love the Holy Name, and are thankful for their Churchly inheritance; and among the first, because though resources have been severely crippled, and num bers sadly reduced by untoward circumstances, their is a willingness to help build up Zion, to repair the waste places, to make the desert rejoice and blossom as the rose. Book Early Religious History of Maryland

Download or read book Early Religious History of Maryland written by B. F. Brown and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Religious History of Maryland: Maryland Not a Roman Catholic Colony, Religious Toleration Not an Act of Roman Catholic Legislation, Being the Substance of a Lecture Delivered Before the Guild of All Saints Church, Baltimore The perversions of history which come before us with all the assurance of truth, are both hurtful and difficult of correction. They mislead successive generations, deceiving their judgment and shaping their action. Tradition and myth form a large part of what men call history; and human selfishness, credulity, and prejudice, transmute them into the solidity of well-accredited facts. No sphere of human thought is so prolific of such misleading as the religious history of individuals and nations. Often the opinion of many generations respecting some historical character or action is utterly away from the truth; because ignorance or prejudice has misstated the facts of the case; and most persons are content to accept the current view, without questioning its accuracy. In this way history is manufactured from falsehood or fancy, while frequent and confident repetition of the same lie will often silence the timid remonstrant, and confirm in error the doubtful questioner. The good people of Maryland, in common with a large part of our whole nation, and thinking people everywhere, have been accustomed to receive, as an unquestionable fact, an assertion respecting the early history of Maryland, its settlement and government, which has no foundation in point of fact; yet has been used to mislead the ignorant, and silence the honest inquirer after truth. The error in question has been incorporated into our school-books, asserted in our newspapers, reiterated by politicians, in the interest of partisan discussion, and preached from pulpit and rostrum, until nearly our whole people give it credence, and regard the man who would call it in question as either wanting in knowledge, or blinded by prejudice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion Under the Barons of Baltimore: Being a Sketch of Ecclesiastical Affairs From the Founding of the Maryland Colony in to the Formal Establishment of the Church of England in 1692, With Special Reference to the Claim That Maryland Was Founded by Roman Catholics as the Seed Plot of Religio Students are well aware that much which passes current in Maryland for reliable history, is utterly unworthy of credit. This is especially the case with Maryland's ecclesiastical history. But this fact need occasion little or no surprise. That error should have been very largely incorporated in the story of Maryland's past, was as natural and inevitable as are the storms of March or the shortening of the days in winter, seeing that imagination had been called upon to fill up many and large gaps in her records. Now, however, it is altogether different. Increased historical research; the publication of the Maryland Archives; above all, the recovery and publication of the Calvert Papers after many years disappearance, have solved questions once apparently insoluble, removed difficulties long considered insuperable, and reconciled seemingly hopeless contradictions. Book Early Presbyterianism in Maryland Classic Reprint

Download or read book Early Presbyterianism in Maryland Classic Reprint written by J. William McIlvain and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Presbyterianism in Maryland The strength of the Puritan party in the province will further appear from the fact that after the Commonwealth was firmly established, they proceeded to take possession of the government, and pass laws contrary to the well known Wishes of the Lord Pro prietor. Among them was a new Act concerning Religion, which undid the generous provisions of the former one, and restricted the liberty of public worship to those who were neither Papists, Prelatists, nor Antinomians, in other words, to the Puritans. The language used is of interest as showing, that there were divisions in that party, and therefore that Presbyterians as well as Inde pendants were included under its provisions. The fact that the Puritan government lasted for a number of years shows that they must have had the majority of the colonists on their side in their political if not in their religious sympathies.
