Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church and State in the Maryland Colony The question of who was tolerant in the Maryland colony in matters of religion has long been a subject of dispute. To day the Catholic points with boasting pride to the annals of Maryland and claims that they are conclusive evidence in favor of his tolerant spirit, while on the other hand the Protestant ever seeks to. Find some fallacy by which he may represent them otherwise or at least construe them in such manner as to enhance his own argument or conviction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion Under the Barons of Baltimore: Being a Sketch of Ecclesiastical Affairs From the Founding of the Maryland Colony in to the Formal Establishment of the Church of England in 1692, With Special Reference to the Claim That Maryland Was Founded by Roman Catholics as the Seed Plot of Religio Students are well aware that much which passes current in Maryland for reliable history, is utterly unworthy of credit. This is especially the case with Maryland's ecclesiastical history. But this fact need occasion little or no surprise. That error should have been very largely incorporated in the story of Maryland's past, was as natural and inevitable as are the storms of March or the shortening of the days in winter, seeing that imagination had been called upon to fill up many and large gaps in her records. Now, however, it is altogether different. Increased historical research; the publication of the Maryland Archives; above all, the recovery and publication of the Calvert Papers after many years disappearance, have solved questions once apparently insoluble, removed difficulties long considered insuperable, and reconciled seemingly hopeless contradictions. Book Disestablishment and Religious Dissent

Download or read book Disestablishment and Religious Dissent written by Carl H. Esbeck and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On May 10, 1776, the Second Continental Congress sitting in Philadelphia adopted a Resolution which set in motion a round of constitution making in the colonies, several of which soon declared themselves sovereign states and severed all remaining ties to the British Crown. In forming these written constitutions, the delegates to the state conventions were forced to address the issue of church-state relations. Each colony had unique and differing traditions of church-state relations rooted in the colony’s peoples, their country of origin, and religion. This definitive volume, comprising twenty-one original essays by eminent historians and political scientists, is a comprehensive state-by-state account of disestablishment in the original thirteen states, as well as a look at similar events in the soon-to-be-admitted states of Vermont, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Also considered are disestablishment in Ohio (the first state admitted from the Northwest Territory), Louisiana and Missouri (the first states admitted from the Louisiana Purchase), and Florida (wrestled from Spain under U.S. pressure). The volume makes a unique scholarly contribution by recounting in detail the process of disestablishment in each of the colonies, as well as religion’s constitutional and legal place in the new states of the federal republic.

Book Early Religious History of Maryland

Download or read book Early Religious History of Maryland written by B. F. Brown and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Religious History of Maryland: Maryland Not a Roman Catholic Colony, Religious Toleration Not an Act of Roman Catholic Legislation, Being the Substance of a Lecture Delivered Before the Guild of All Saints Church, Baltimore The perversions of history which come before us with all the assurance of truth, are both hurtful and difficult of correction. They mislead successive generations, deceiving their judgment and shaping their action. Tradition and myth form a large part of what men call history; and human selfishness, credulity, and prejudice, transmute them into the solidity of well-accredited facts. No sphere of human thought is so prolific of such misleading as the religious history of individuals and nations. Often the opinion of many generations respecting some historical character or action is utterly away from the truth; because ignorance or prejudice has misstated the facts of the case; and most persons are content to accept the current view, without questioning its accuracy. In this way history is manufactured from falsehood or fancy, while frequent and confident repetition of the same lie will often silence the timid remonstrant, and confirm in error the doubtful questioner. The good people of Maryland, in common with a large part of our whole nation, and thinking people everywhere, have been accustomed to receive, as an unquestionable fact, an assertion respecting the early history of Maryland, its settlement and government, which has no foundation in point of fact; yet has been used to mislead the ignorant, and silence the honest inquirer after truth. The error in question has been incorporated into our school-books, asserted in our newspapers, reiterated by politicians, in the interest of partisan discussion, and preached from pulpit and rostrum, until nearly our whole people give it credence, and regard the man who would call it in question as either wanting in knowledge, or blinded by prejudice.
