Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church and State: Columbus and America In view Of this, the author's thanks are due in a special sense to Mr. Jonas Olson, now in his eighty-eighth year, but remarkably well preserved, for the liberality with which he drew upon his memory for the facts connected with the inner history Of the Jansonists. Jonas Olson stood near to the person Of the founder Of J ansonism, and, after the great leader's death, succeeded to his authority. It is not too much to say, therefore, that without Mr. Olson's invaluable assist ance this monograph could not have been written. Recogni tion is due also to Mrs. S. J. Anderson, Messrs. John P. Chaiser, J. W. Olson, and others for valuable assistance. The author further acknowledges his indebtedness to Messrs. John Helsen and Andreas Berglund for the use Of manu scripts and original documents relating to the history Of the J ansonists. Mr. Berglund's collection Of original documents contained a part Of the correspondence and the incompleted autobiography Of Eric J anson. Mr. Helsen's manuscript notes were especially valuable. Their author is not a literary man and his collection was not intended for publication. But for many years past, in the leisure Of his retirement from active life, Mr. Helsen has been perfecting his notes for the use Of some future historian. Through the kindness Of an anonymous friend the author has also had access to a certified copy Of the complete trans actions Of the Bishop Hill Colony, the original records being no longer in existence. Mention is made elsewhere Of the printed books and documents which have any bearing on the history Of the J ansonists. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Churches in the Modern State The four lectures which make the main matter of this volume were delivered to the clergy in Gloucester in June 1911 at the request of the Bishop of the Diocese. Since then I have re-written them, still, however, retaining the lecture form. Pressure of other work is responsible for so long a delay in publication. The first Appendix contains a paper read to the Royal Historical Society, and printed in the Society's Transactions. This develops in greater detail the historical thesis which is the basis of the lecture on "The Great Leviathan." The other Appendix consists of three articles on Creighton, Maitland, and Acton, which were contributed by the author to the Guardian in the year 1907. Book Thoughts on the Separation of Church and State Classic Reprint

Download or read book Thoughts on the Separation of Church and State Classic Reprint written by Edward Burton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts on the Separation of Church and State It might, perhaps, be true in one sense to say, that the State united itself with the Church in this country: and it is important to remember, that the Church of England existed for centuries before there was any State, to which it could unite itself. A Church or body of Christians existed in this country, and was governed by Bishops, Priests, and Deacons, not only for many centuries before Unitarians, or Quakers, or Infidels were allowed to sit in Parliament, but for many centuries before Parliament itself was thought of. There is great reason to think, that Christianity was introduced into this island in the first century and there is positive evidence, that it had spread very widely in the second century, while the government was still Pagan. In the fourth century we read of Bishops from British churches attending Councils in different parts of Europe: and no fact in history is more demonstrable, than that the Episcopal form of Church Government prevailed at that time in Britain, as it did in the whole of Christendom. If we ask why our British ancestors preferred an Episcopal Church, we shall be drawn into the con troversy concerning Episcopacy, for which I have no fancy at present: and it is sufficient to observe, that the Christian inhabitants of the island settled the matter for themselves all Christians were then Episcopalians: there were no Presbyterians, no Independents, no Quakers, no Baptists, no Unita rians: there were, in fact, no Dissenters: all be longed to the Church of England and the frame work and constitution of that Church were precisely the same then as they are at present, with this difference in part of its arrangements, that the Epis copal sees were not established by any act of the civil power, nor was the nomination of Bishops in the hands of the Government. Download or read book The Church and the War Classic Reprint written by Edward Lee Hicks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-24 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the War Such were our hopes. They have been rudely stricken down. Violence has broken out and is being repulsed by violence. Nearly all the European nations are embroiled in the conflict. Christendom perhaps never before exhibited so hideous and shameful a spectacle. What has the Church to say to it? Is Christianity helpless 1 Is the Gospel bankrupt 2 I want to answer this question as one who has passed through the gloom of the first days of the war, as if stunned, but having been stunned is recovering from the shock, and begins to open his eyes to the light of day and the living facts of life.
