Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chunda a Story of the Navajos "These horses are dragging us to certain death on the bottom of that black canon," shouted the guide, with a terrible oath. In the gloom of a mesa park covered with lofty pines two men were struggling with their horses, which were trying to free themselves from a rude buckboard wagon. The Indian trail across this mountain plateau, to which they ascended from the Fort Defiance agency early in the morning, had led them astray. In the afternoon they had lost the new wagon road to Chin-a-li, which the guide had confidently chosen, but had turned into this well-worn trail for ponies, which made but an uncertain and difficult track for wheels. The two horses, well jaded and cross from hard usage, were showing a dangerous temper, but the desperate driver swore that they should bring his companion and himself to their destination in the Canon de Chelly by noon of the next day. The darkness was deepened by the shadows which the moon cast through the dense treetops, yet wherever the trail would permit the horses leaped forward on an uneven gallop to avoid the deep ruts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nah-Nee-Ta: A Tale of the Navajos The purpose of the author in giving this labor of real and fictitious things to the public may find expression better in a preface, probably, than elsewhere. For a period of several years following close upon the war of the rebellion, he was stationed in Western New Mexico in the immediate vicinity of the country occupied by the Navajos, and became during that time largely acquainted with the customs and habits of this remarkable people. Since that period a railroad has been built almost upon the Southern line of their reservation, and settlements of white people have been made upon all sides about them. Influenced by these means, many of their time-honored practices and customs have been largely modified or entirely abandoned. A new people, virtually, has made its appearance in place of the old one, with entirely different views of life, and its duties. A people, it may be said, without practically a single national characteristic yet developed in this new transitional state. The influences thus exerted have caused the young men to become skeptical of the teachings of their elders, and at the same time have made them slow to adopt the habits and practices of strangers. The customs of the people before these changes occurred, will now only be preserved by means of unreliable legends. Anticipating this result, the author endeavored during his residence near them, to obtain reliable information concerning their ancient customs and beliefs, in order that it might be preserved as a possible contribution to science. The task proved to be a difficult one. Such practices and evidences, of belief as fell under his personal observation, day after day, for long periods of time, alone seemed well substantiated. Book excerpt: Leeming illustrates the various stages or rites of passage of the mythic universal hero, from birth to childhood, through trial and quest, death, descent, rebirth, and ascension. The arrangement of texts by themes such as "Childhood, Initiation and Divine Signs," "The Descent to theUnderworld," and "Resurrection and Rebirth" strip mythic characters of their many national and cultural "masks" to reveal their archetypal aspects. Real figures, including Jesus and Mohammed, are also included underlining the theory that myths are real and can be applied to real life. This editionis updated to include additional heroine myths, as well as Navajo, Indonesian, Indian, Chinese, and African tales.

Book The Napo Runa of Amazonian Ecuador

Download or read book The Napo Runa of Amazonian Ecuador written by Michael Uzendoski and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Uzendoski's theoretically informed work analyzes value from the perspective of the Napo Runa people of the Amazonian Ecuador. Based upon historical and archival research, as well as the author's years of fieldwork in indigenous communities, The Napo Runa of Amazonian Ecuadorpresents theoretical issues of value, poetics, and kinship as linked to the author's intersubjective experiences in Napo Runa culture. Drawing on insights from the theory of gift and value, Uzendoski argues that Napo Runa culture personifies value by transforming things into people through a process of subordinating them to human relationships. While many traditional exchange models treat the production of things as inconsequential, the Napo Runa understand production to involve a relationship with natural beings (plants, animals, and spirits of the forest) that they believe share spiritual substance, or samai. Value is the outcome of a complicated poetics of transformation by which things and persons are woven into kinship forms that define daily social and ritual life.

Book Fields of Plenty

Download or read book Fields of Plenty written by and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2005-10-13 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fields of Plenty is the memoir of respected farmer, writer, and photographer Michael Ableman as he and his son travel from his own farm in British Columbia across the United States in search of innovative and passionate farmers who are making a difference in what we eat and how we experience food. From California to New York, this story captures the essence of each farmer's vision, the spirit of the land that they work, and the beauty and flavors of the foods that they lovingly produce. Ableman's odyssey takes him to a melon grower who is "militant about flavor," sheep-cheese producers who have built their own culturing caves, an urban farmer growing heirloom tomatoes for market on abandoned lots, and others who are trying to answer the complex questions of sustenance philosophically and, most important, practically." "Fields of Plenty is a hopeful memoir that reveals the larger issues of food in a modern world. Illustrated with Ableman's photographs and flavored with recipes that feature each farmer's bounty, Fields of Plenty is an intimate portrait of food and agriculture at a critical crossroads."--BOOK JACKET.
