Book excerpt: Now the Netflix Limited Series Unbelievable, starring Toni Collette, Merritt Wever, and Kaitlyn Dever • Two Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists tell the riveting true crime story of a teenager charged with lying about having been raped—and the detectives who followed a winding path to arrive at the truth. “Gripping . . . [with a] John Grisham–worthy twist.”—Emily Bazelon, New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice) On August 11, 2008, eighteen-year-old Marie reported that a masked man broke into her apartment near Seattle, Washington, and raped her. Within days police and even those closest to Marie became suspicious of her story. The police swiftly pivoted and began investigating Marie. Confronted with inconsistencies in her story and the doubts of others, Marie broke down and said her story was a lie—a bid for attention. Police charged Marie with false reporting, and she was branded a liar. More than two years later, Colorado detective Stacy Galbraith was assigned to investigate a case of sexual assault. Describing the crime to her husband that night, Galbraith learned that the case bore an eerie resemblance to a rape that had taken place months earlier in a nearby town. She joined forces with the detective on that case, Edna Hendershot, and the two soon discovered they were dealing with a serial rapist: a man who photographed his victims, threatening to release the images online, and whose calculated steps to erase all physical evidence suggested he might be a soldier or a cop. Through meticulous police work the detectives would eventually connect the rapist to other attacks in Colorado—and beyond. Based on investigative files and extensive interviews with the principals, A False Report is a serpentine tale of doubt, lies, and a hunt for justice, unveiling the disturbing truth of how sexual assault is investigated today—and the long history of skepticism toward rape victims.

Book Sex Secrets

Download or read book Sex Secrets written by Judith A. Allen and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is both a detailed study of criminal acts involving Australian women since 1880 and a feminist analysis of their social and political significance. Based on previously unpublished archival documents, including court reports, coroners' reports, and those of prisons and child welfare organizations, Allen's findings show that infanticide, prostitution, and sexual and other assaults nvolving women have been much more prevalent than generally believed. Contending that this lack of official attention is due to the crimes' connection with the sexual relationships between men and women, Allen demonstrates that such a false perception of their incidence has disguised their significance in the processes of social change that have occured over the last century. This study will be of particular value for courses in women's studies, criminology, and the sociology of law and of gender.

Book Unsportsmanlike Conduct College Football and the Politics of Rape

Download or read book Unsportsmanlike Conduct College Football and the Politics of Rape written by Jessica Luther and published by Akashic Books. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jessica Luther studied history and the classics before marshaling her writing talent toward of-the-moment topics like sexual assault and college sports culture. Now she's an investigative journalist, working from her adopted hometown, Austin, Tex., in what is perhaps the nation's most college-obsessed state. Ms. Luther's new book, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, examines the 'programmatic manner' in which sexual assaults are swept under the rug by institutions both on campus and in the media." --New York Times "Not to reckon with Luther's book would be an abdication not only of one's moral faculty but also of one's fandom...Luther does't just want to save future victims; she wants to save college football." --New York Times Book Review "A significant and riveting look at how one of the greatest cultural tragedies of the millennial generation--the silencing of sexual violence against women on campus--is nurtured by a system of cover-ups and corporatized crises management." --Playboy.com "In Unsportsmanlike Conduct, [Luther] draws on years of research and reporting to outline what she calls the 'playbook'--all the standard, predictable ways that football programs, universities, the NCAA, and sports media typically respond when athletes are accused of rape or assault. It's an infuriating, exhaustively researched catalogue of problems, from denial and toothless language to ignoring or discrediting the victim." --Elle.com "The most important sports book of the year." --Booklist, Starred Review "Jessica Luther is a Texas-based investigative reporter who broke the story of Sam Ukwuachu, a football player at Baylor University who was then on trial for sexual assault. Since then she's kept track of the dozens of sexual-assault claims made against college football players every year. Here, she looks at the relationship between football and sexual assault, the people and systems that perpetuate it, and how we can change the narrative going forward." --New York Magazine "Investigative journalist Luther catalogues the abuses created and enabled by college football programs and suggests workable reforms." -- Boston Globe, One of the Best Sports Books of 2016 The latest from Akashic's Edge of Sports imprint. Football teams create playbooks, in which they draw up the plays they will use on the field. Playbooks are how teams work and why they win. This book is about a different kind of playbook: the one coaches, teams, universities, police, communities, the media, and fans seem to follow whenever a college football player is accused of sexual assault. It's a deep dive into how different institutions--the NCAA, athletic departments, universities, the media--run the same plays over and over again when these stories break. If everyone runs his play well, scrutiny dies down quickly, no institution ever has to change how it operates, and the evaporation of these cases into nothingness looks natural. In short, this playbook is why nothing ever changes. Unsportsmanlike Conduct unpacks this societal playbook piece by piece, and not only advocates that we destroy the old plays, but also suggests we replace them with ones that will force us to finally do something about this issue. Political sportswriter and Edge of Sports imprint curator Dave Zirin (the Nation) has never shied away from criticizing that which die-hard sports fans hold dear. The Edge of Sports titles will address issues across many different sports--football, basketball, swimming, tennis, etc.--and at both the professional and nonprofessional/collegiate levels. Furthermore, Zirin brings to the table select stories of athletes' journeys and what they are facing and how they evolve both in their sport as well as against the greater backdrop of one's life's odyssey.

Book The Red Zone Report

Download or read book The Red Zone Report written by End Rape on Campus Australia (Organization) and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Residential Colleges of the University of Sydney have borne growing scrutiny and negative media reporting over decades of hazing, sexual assault, ritualistic humiliation, alcohol abuse, sexism, and violence by resident students. The latest article highlighting campus conditions in 2016, however, occured in a new era of awareness and concern and eventually led to the University agreeing to participate in a review by former Sex Discrimination Commissioner Elizabeth Broderick, published in 2017. EROC Australia welcomed some aspects of the review, but expressed concerns over the methodology and approach and whether the review was about managing reputational issues rather than genuinely seeking to address a culture that enabled sexual violence. In response, they have commissioned this report to address the perceived gaps and provide a more balanced and independent approach. The report: reviews what is known about the prevalence of sexual assault at these colleges; restores the missing context by outlining the series of events which triggered the Broderick review; situates recent events within the historical context of scandals at University of Sydney colleges dating back to the 1950s; situates these experiences within the broader national experience of residential college life; incorporates the voices of sexual assault survivors through case studies; and develops and presents recommendations for the University, the Residential Colleges, local secondary schools, and government.

Download or read book From Cop to Crusader written by Doug Williams and published by . This book was released on 2014-01-24 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2014 EDITION brings you up to date on all Doug is continuing to do to stop the abuse caused by the dangerous myth of "lie detection" and details the unscrupulous, unconstitutional methods the government is now using to try to stop - and even imprison him for speaking out against the abusive polygraph industry. It also includes the original version of his manual HOW TO STING THE POLYGRAPH. A decorated veteran of the Oklahoma City Police Department, Doug Williams held the rank of Detective Sergeant in charge of the Internal Affairs/Polygraph Section. As an expert police polygraphist, he administered thousands of tests. But, as Diane Sawyer said on 60 MINUTES, "Doug knows everything about the polygraph, and he says it doesn't work!" This is the true story of how Doug changed from cop to crusader in order to fight the abuse perpetrated by the sick joke called the "lie detector," and the practitioners of what he describes as an "insidious Orwellian instrument of torture." This is the ultimate "whistle blower" book that chronicles the exciting and dangerous adventures of Doug Williams and his crusade against the multi-billion dollar scam called lie detection; what the inventor of the polygraph, Dr. John Larson, referred to as "Frankenstein's monster." Before December of 1988, three out of every four people in private industry in the U.S. had to pass a polygraph test in order to get or keep a job; after December of 1988, that was a violation of federal law. How did that happen? Legislation to prohibit this type of polygraph testing had been introduced every year since 1972, and every year it failed to pass - every year, that is, until 1988. Why did that legislation finally succeed after so many failures? Many say it was primarily due to the efforts of Doug Williams. As a matter of fact, Doug Williams was given the VOLUNTEER ADVOCATE award by the ACLU for being "the one person most responsible for the Employee Polygraph Protection Act becoming a federal law." Doug tells of all he did to get this law passed and what he continues to do in his fight against the polygraph industry by employing a three pronged attack - LEGISLATION, LITIGATION, & EDUCATION. This book is an exciting behind the scenes account of Doug's first very controversial appearance on national television, his intensely explosive testimony in congress, and his work to build grass roots support to outlaw the use of the polygraph. His crusade against the polygraph industry became an obsession, and for many years he lived in the back of a 1967 Chevy panel truck and moved from city to city putting on seminars and going on radio and television talk shows to promote support for legislation that would outlaw the use of the polygraph. It tells of how he debunked the myth of "lie detection" on CBS 60 MINUTES; in this classic investigative report, three out of three polygraph operators called three different truthful people liars on a crime that never even happened. Doug has been featured on most of the major news programs, and on all of the major television and cable networks including CBS 60 MINUTES, CBS NIGHTWATCH, NBC NIGHTLY NEWS, CNN NEWS, FOX NETWORK'S EXPLORING THE UNKNOWN, NBC DATELINE, FOX NEWS, CNN NEWS STAND, THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL, BBC, TLC, and SHOWTIME PENN & TELLER: BULLSHIT! He has been featured in over 1000 newspaper and magazine articles, thousands of blogs, has been interviewed by hundreds of local TV news and talk shows, and appeared on over 500 radio talk shows. He has lobbied in the US House of Representatives and the Senate, and was a member of the Office of Technology Assessment studying the validity of the polygraph as a "lie detector." This book tells of what Doug Williams has done; the dangers he has faced, the victories he has had, and some of the humorous incidents that occurred along the way. It tells of how he continues to fight the dangerous myth of lie detection, and what the government is doing to try to stop him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has given national consciousness to the problematic treatment of sexual assault in Australia's past. Yet we still have little knowledge of the policing, prosecution and punishment of sexual crimes in the past. This book examines this history by investigating Australia in the 1950s. The 1950s has remained a decade with a nostalgic reputation for upholding the sanctity of the nuclear family. Fewer remember that it was this same decade that saw the sharpest rise in Australian history of arrests and prosecution of sexual assault and was the origin of many of our contemporary beliefs about sexual crimes. Using transcripts of 500 trials, Sex Crimes in the Fifties examine the full range of sexual assaults that came before the court, including rape, crimes against children, homosexuality and acts of indecency, to consider the ways sexual crimes was policed and treated, as well as the ways the wider public understood these offences.

Book excerpt: It was an easy case to close - until two detectives cracked it back open... 'I pretty much read A False Report in one sitting. It is deeply disturbing but brilliant. I hope it helps with the seismic shift needed in attitudes to women who are brave enough to come forward when they have been assaulted.' Sandi Toksvig One of Stylist Magazine's 20 Must-Read Books of 2018 ***SHORTLISTED FOR THE GOLD DAGGER AWARD*** On 11 August 2008, eighteen-year-old Marie reported that a masked man had broken into her home and raped her. Within days, police – and even those closest to Marie – became suspicious of her story: details of the crime just didn’t seem plausible. Confronted with the seeming inconsistencies, Marie broke down and said her story was a fabrication – a bid for attention. The police convicted her of making a false report. She was vilified as a liar. More than two years later, some 1,600 kilometres away, detective Stacy Galbraith was assigned to a case of sexual assault. It bore an eerie resemblance to a rape that had taken place months earlier in a nearby town. Galbraith contacted the detective on that case, Edna Hendershot, and they joined forces. Galbraith and Hendershot soon realised they were dealing with a serial rapist: a man who took calculated steps to erase all physical evidence, who photographed each of his victims, threatening to release the images online if the women went to the police. After weeks of meticulous investigation, they had a name. But they also had yet another victim – a young woman whose identity was a mystery, a possible missing link. It was imperative they find her. Based on investigative files and extensive interviews with those involved, A False Report is a serpentine tale of doubt, lies and a hunt for justice. It unveils the disturbing reality of how sexual assault is investigated and the long history of scepticism towards its victims. But it is also the story of two women whose determined resolve and detective brilliance finally brought the truth to light.

Book excerpt: If someone is accused of making a false allegation, it is usually assumed that the person making the false allegation is lying. Lying is an intentional misrepresentations of facts. In most allegations of sexual assault, there is no evidence. The woman says she was sexually assaulted and the accused man denies it. The woman says she can name her assailant, but might point her finger at the wrong guy. Supporters of the alleged assailant often try to undermine the credibility of the woman, to prove she is lying. Supporters of the woman making the allegations try to undermine the credibility of the man, to prove he is lying. Lying is just one of the many meanings of false. It is entirely possible for a woman to make an allegation against a man with 100% certainty of the truth of her allegations. It is also possible for a man to deny the allegations with 100% certainty. How false allegations happen is a testament to the complexity and fallibility of being human, as well as our tendency to surround ourselves with people who reflect our personal reality.Using the Christine Ford's allegations against Brett Kavanaugh as a case study, this book looks at how false definitions of sexual assault and consent are causing a fear based hysteria about sexual assault.

Book Researching Violence Against Women

Download or read book Researching Violence Against Women written by Mary Ellsberg and published by WHO. This book was released on 2005 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Draws on the collective experiences and insights of many individuals, and in particular from the implementation of the WHO Multi-country Study on Women's Health and Domestic Violence against Women in over 10 countries. Twenty years ago, violence against women was not considered an issue worthy of international concern. Gradually, violence against women has come to be recognized as a legitimate human rights issue and as a significant threat to women's health and well-being. Now that international attention is focused on gender-based violence, methodologically rigorous research is needed to guide the formulation and implementation of effective interventions, policies, and prevention strategies. The manual has been developed in response to the growing need to improve the quality, quantity, and comparability of international data on physical and sexual abuse. It outlines some of the methodological and ethical challenges of conducting research on violence against women and describes a range of innovative techniques that have been used to address these challenges.

Book Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States

Download or read book Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day in the United States, children and adolescents are victims of commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking. Despite the serious and long-term consequences for victims as well as their families, communities, and society, efforts to prevent, identify, and respond to these crimes are largely under supported, inefficient, uncoordinated, and unevaluated. Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States examines commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents of the United States under age 18. According to this report, efforts to prevent, identify, and respond to these crimes require better collaborative approaches that build upon the capabilities of people and entities from a range of sectors. In addition, such efforts need to confront demand and the individuals who commit and benefit from these crimes. The report recommends increased awareness and understanding, strengthening of the law's response, strengthening of research to advance understanding and to support the development of prevention and intervention strategies, support for multi-sector and interagency collaboration, and creation of a digital information-sharing platform. A nation that is unaware of these problems or disengaged from solutions unwittingly contributes to the ongoing abuse of minors. If acted upon in a coordinated and comprehensive manner, the recommendations of Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States can help advance and strengthen the nation's emerging efforts to prevent, identify, and respond to commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of minors in the United States.
