Book excerpt: There is one chance to stop the coming crisis, a world war that will lead to the end of civilization and the annihilation of mankind. To bring that message, the son of the future's most powerful man has used an unreliable technology of his own design to come back twenty years to our time and weave the tale of what is to come. The political and social unrest and the widespread corruption have fostered a dangerous rebellion. Its power is growing already, unnoticed in small towns, arming for a war. Time is against us, now and in the messenger's time. For us, it is a danger to our way of life and the comparative peace that we now have. For them, it is a question of the survival of the species. A lone reporter holds the key to stopping the crisis with the power of his voice.

Book The Disrupted Workplace

Download or read book The Disrupted Workplace written by Benjamin H. Snyder and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-08 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-first century workplace compels Americans to be more flexible, often at a cost to their personal well-being. In The Disrupted Workplace, Benjamin Snyder examines how three groups of American workers construct moral order in a capitalist system that demands flexibility. Snyder argues that new scheduling techniques, employment strategies, and technologies disrupt the flow and trajectory of working life, transforming how workers experience time. Work can feel both liberating and terrorizing, engrossing in the short term but unsustainable in the long term. Through a vivid portrait of workers' struggles to adapt their lives to constant disruption, The Disrupted Workplace mounts a compelling critique of the price of the flexible economy.

Book excerpt: It's the most influential religion you've never heard of: Discordianism took the world by storm when it was revealed to two young hippies in 1958 or 1959. Who would have thought this goofy nuttiness would eventually turn into a worldwide caper involving the assassination of a US President, Timothy Leary, a rubber gorilla, a ten hour play, a million pounds of burnt cash, the German secret service, a pumpkin launching trebuchet, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Charles Manson, twelve arrested New Orleans Mardi Gras participants, a series of murders, Kermit the frog, and an extremely confused Australian who wrote this very silly book? Not me, that's for sure. WITH A FORWARD BY JOHN HIGGS WITH AN AFTERWORD BY CRAMULUS

Book The Black Aesthetic Unbound

Download or read book The Black Aesthetic Unbound written by April C. E. Langley and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the era of the slave trade, more than 12 million Africans were brought as slaves to the Americas. Their memories, ideas, beliefs, and practices would forever reshape its history and cultures. April C. E. Langley's The Black Aesthetic Unbound exposes the dilemma of the literal, metaphorical, and rhetorical question, "What is African in African American literature?" Confronting the undeniable imprints of West African culture and consciousness in early black writing such as Olaudah Equiano's The Interesting Narrative or Phillis Wheatley's poetry, the author conceives eighteenth-century Black Experience to be literally and figuratively encompassing and inextricably linked to Africa, Europe, and America. Consequently, this book has three aims: to locate the eighteenth century as the genesis of the cultural and historical movements which mark twentieth-century black aestheticism--known as the Black Aesthetic; to analyze problematic associations of African identity as manifested in an essentialized Afro-America; and to study the relationship between specific West African modes of thought and expression and the emergence of a black aesthetic in eighteenth-century North America. By exploring how Senegalese, Igbo, and other West African traditions provide striking new lenses for reading poetry and prose by six significant writers, Langley offers a fresh perspective on this important era in our literary history. Ultimately, the author confronts the difficult dilemma of how to use diasporic, syncretic, and vernacular theories of Black culture to think through the massive cultural transformations wrought by the Middle Passage.

Book The Song of Abraham Other Poems

Download or read book The Song of Abraham Other Poems written by James Ronald Bartlett and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a nostalgic look backward into youth as a lad in Wyoming hay fields, the unfolding of hidden human relationships through the discovery of a book of German poetry in the rubble of razed house, or a bit of tractor-trailer irony, The Song of Abraham takes the reader through the subjective and personal, the lyrical and prophetic, mixing the biblical and secular, the humorous and serious in a series of dramatic conflicts - between man and God; an Indian fallen victim to the white man's world; a business man confronted by his fate in the form of the office scrubwoman, or simply the wind as harbinger of death to an old man feeding pigeons. More darkness than light, the poetry cuts a somber edge through life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galileo Unbound traces the journey that brought us from Galileo's law of free fall to today's geneticists measuring evolutionary drift, entangled quantum particles moving among many worlds, and our lives as trajectories traversing a health space with thousands of dimensions. Remarkably, common themes persist that predict the evolution of species as readily as the orbits of planets or the collapse of stars into black holes. This book tells the history of spaces of expanding dimension and increasing abstraction and how they continue today to give new insight into the physics of complex systems. Galileo published the first modern law of motion, the Law of Fall, that was ideal and simple, laying the foundation upon which Newton built the first theory of dynamics. Early in the twentieth century, geometry became the cause of motion rather than the result when Einstein envisioned the fabric of space-time warped by mass and energy, forcing light rays to bend past the Sun. Possibly more radical was Feynman's dilemma of quantum particles taking all paths at once — setting the stage for the modern fields of quantum field theory and quantum computing. Yet as concepts of motion have evolved, one thing has remained constant, the need to track ever more complex changes and to capture their essence, to find patterns in the chaos as we try to predict and control our world.
