Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An exciting new collection, The L.M. Montgomery Reader assembles significant rediscovered primary materials on one of Canada's most enduringly popular authors throughout her high-profile career as the author of the resoundingly successful Anne of Green Gables (1908) and after her death. Each of its three volumes gathers pieces published all over the world to set the stage for a much-needed reassessment of Montgomery's literary reputation. Much of the material is freshly unearthed from archives and digital collections and has never before been collected in book form. The ninety selections appearing in this first volume focus on Montgomery's role as a public celebrity, giving a strong impression of her as a writer and cultural critic as she discusses a range of topics with wit, wisdom, and humour, including the natural landscape of Prince Edward Island, her wide readership, anxieties about modernity, and the continued relevance of "old ideals." These essays and interviews are joined by a number of additional pieces that discuss her work's literary and cultural value in relation to an emerging canon of Canadian literature, with nearly one hundred selections in all. Each volume is accompanied by an extensive introduction and detailed commentary by leading Montgomery scholar Benjamin Lefebvre that trace the interplay between the author and the critic, as well as between the private and public Montgomery. This volume, and the Reader as a whole, adds tremendously to our understanding and appreciation of Montgomery?s legacy as a Canadian author and as a literary celebrity both during and beyond her lifetime." --Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Anne Shirley was curled up on the window-seat of Theodora Dix's sitting-room one Saturday evening, looking dreamily afar at some fair starland beyond the hills of sunset. Anne was visiting for a fortnight of her vacation at Echo Lodge, where Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Irving were spending the summer, and she often ran over to the old Dix homestead to chat for awhile with Theodora. They had had their chat out, on this particular evening, and Anne was giving herself over to the delight of building an air-castle. She leaned her shapely head, with its braided coronet of dark red hair, against the window-casing, and her gray eyes were like the moonlight gleam of shadowy pools. Then she saw Ludovic Speed coming down the lane. He was yet far from the house, for the Dix lane was a long one, but Ludovic could be recognized as far as he could be seen. No one else in Middle Grafton had such a tall, gently-stooping, placidly-moving figure. In every kink and turn of it there was an individuality all Ludovic's own. Anne roused herself from her dreams, thinking it would only be tactful to take her departure. Ludovic was courting Theodora. Everyone in Grafton knew that, or, if anyone were in ignorance of the fact, it was not because he had not had time to find out. Ludovic had been coming down that lane to see Theodora, in the same ruminating, unhastening fashion, for fifteen years!

Book The Chronicles of Avonlea

Download or read book The Chronicles of Avonlea written by Lucy Maud Montgomery and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 1928 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Miss Montgomery continues to follow up the vein she opened in "Anne of Green Gables." These stories are all of Spencervale or Avonlea. Anne herself —or what we hope to be a caricature of her—appears on the cover, and is mentioned now and again within. But she is not the leading figure in any of the tales, which might have been called "Romances of Middle Age," so strongly does a single motive dominate them. Ten out of the dozen stories deal with belated love-affairs, or with the pathetic devotion of age for youth.

Book excerpt: The first thing every listener will want to know is whether Anne Shirley appears in these stories of Avonlea and Spencervale. She certainly does. As a matter of fact, chapter one starts off in this manner: "Anne Shirley was curled up on the window seat of Theodora Dix's sitting-room one Saturday evening, looking dreamily afar at some fair starland beyond the hills of sunset. Anne was visiting for a fortnight of her vacation...." However, most of the people who appear in this audiobook are new to listeners of the Anne books. There are Ludovic and Theodora, "Old Lady Lloyd" and Sylvia Gray, Felix Moore and his grandfather, Little Jocelyn and Aunty Nan, Lucinda Penhallow, Old Man Shaw's Blossom, Olivia Sterling, and many, many others. The charm of Anne of Green Gablesand Anne of Avonleais to be found in every chapter of this gently sentimental and enjoyably humorous audiobook. LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY (1874--1942) was born in Clifton, Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.), Canada. Although she lived at a time when few women received a higher education, Lucy attended Prince Wales College in Charlottestown, P.E.I., and Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. At seventeen she went to Halifax to write for its two newspapers, but she returned to live with her grandmother in Cavendish, P.E.I., where she taught and contributed stories to magazines and found the basis for her "Anne" books. Anne of Green Gables(1908) brought her overnight success and international recognition. She and her husband, the Reverend Ewen MacDonald, eventually moved to Ontario. She died in Toronto in 1942 Excerpted from Chronicles of Avonlea by L. M. Montgomery All rights reserved by the original copyright owners.
