Book excerpt: The NATO - EMBO Advanced Study Institute - Lecture Course on "CHROMOSOME DAMAGE AND REPAIR" was held at God¢ysund Fjord Hotel outside Bergen, Norway. from Ms\r 27th to June 5th, 1980. This book represents the proceedings of this meeting. In addition to the for mal lectures, a number of short contributions presented in the dis cussion sessions following the lectures are also included. The papers have been divided into different groups according to topic, essentially in the same way as they were presented during the meet ing. The editors have m. ade' few alterations in the manuscript sub mitted and these were mostly confined to typing style and correc tion ot typographical errors. We would like to express our appreciation to all the persons who helped in making this meeting possible. Special thanks are due to Tomas Lindahl, Alan R. Lehmann and Erik Boye, who served in the advisory program committee. We would also like to thank our Danish friends and colleagues and others who provided invaluable assistance in an emergency situation. The editors are also grateful for the financial support provided by a number of organizations and institu tions. First and foremost of these were the NATO Scientific Affairs Division and the European Molecular Biology Organization.
Download or read book Cell Regulation by Intracellular Signals written by Stephane Swillens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1980, the IVth International Cyclic Nucleotide Conference was held in Brussels. As this meeting attracted many investigators involved in cyclic nucleotides and calcium role in intracellular regulation, it was thought that this opportunity could be used to organize, prior to the Congress, an in-depth introductory course on the subject. This was carried out as a NATO Advanced Study Institute. The participants included Ph. D. students and M. D. s engaged in a research training, but also fully trained and well known researchers who wanted a refresher course on the whole subject. During the course, most of the participants and lecturers asked to be provided with a text summarizing the basic lectures of the course. This book was therefore conceived as a basic textbook on the regulation and action of intracellular signal molecules, concentrating mainly on cyclic nucleotides and calcium. It was deliberately kept at a basic level. We would therefore be happy if it could be used as an introduction for interested M. D. s or Ph. D. s working in other fields or entering this field and as a general refresher for researchers interested in the subject. For this reason, very general schemes have been asked of the authors, along with reading lists of available reviews rather than extensive bibliographies. The editors should like to thank the NATO Scientific Affairs Committee for having supported the course and Mrs. Gh. Wilmes who prepared the manuscripts. S. SWILLENS J. E.

Download or read book Nitroimidazoles written by A. Breccia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 1979, the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Bologna received a proposal from Professor Breccia to hold an International Conference on "Nitroimidazoles: Chemistry, Pharmacology and Clinical Application". Because of the great interest in these drugs in various fields, I was very pleased to accept the proposal and to give to the Conference, the sponsorship of the University of Bologna. It was an added pleasure to accept the chairmanship of the meeting, together with Professors Sensi and Adams. At the same time, the Minister of Education approved the proposal also from the Faculty of Pharmacy, to offer an advanced Course on the tOpic: "Radiosensitizers of Hypoxic Cells". This Course was subsequently approved by a special Committee of the NATO Scientific Programme as an Advanced Study Institute. Since the subject matter of both the Conference and the Course are closely inter-related, it was logical to plan the Conference as part of the overall Course. Bringing together specialists from quite different and apparently unrelated fields of research, but all with an interest in the study and application of one single group of drugs, is a novel idea with intriguing possibilities. The volumes of the proceedings include contributions from experts with such diverse interests as synthetic chemistry, mechanism of drug action, parasitology, anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, pharmacology and toxicology, radiation sensitizers for use in radiotherapy and the development of drugs for use in cancer chemotherapy generally.
Download or read book Structural Molecular Biology written by David Davies and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural biology is undergoing a revolution in both the sophistication of new biophysical methods and the complexity of problems in biomolecular structure and organization opened up for study. These changes are directly attributable to major advances in computer technology, computational methods, development of high intensity synchrotron radiation sources, new magnetic resonance methods, laser optical techniques, etc. Structure-function problems previously considered intractable may now be solved. As this area of specialisation continues to expand, there is a need to review the various physical methods currently being used and developed in struc tural molecular biology. At the same time that individual techniques and their applications become more specialized, the need for effect ive communication between investigators gains in imperative. It is vital to forge links among sub-disciplines and to emphasise the complementary nature of results observed by different biophysical methods. This publication contains the review lectures given at a meeting on "Current Methods in Structural Molecular Biology" spon sored by NATO as an Advanced Study Institute and by FEBS ~s Advanced Course No. 78. The aim of the meeting was to bring together, in a teaching environment, students and specialists in diverse biophysical methodologies with the specific purpose of exploring, questioning and critically assessing the present and future state of biological structure research. The scientific content of the interdisciplinary Study Institute centred around three interrelated aspects; biophysical methods and instrumentation, their application to biological structure problems, and derivation of structural information and insights.

Download or read book Active Defense Mechanisms in Plants written by R. Wood and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Active Defence Mechanisms in Plants" was held at Cape Sounion, Greece, 21 April - 3 May 1981. It succeeded a similar Institute held at Porte Conte, Sardinia in 1975 on "Specificity in Plant Diseases. " What are active defence mechanisms in the context of plant disease in which a plant, the host, may be damaged by a pathogen? Defence mechanisms comprise properties of the host that decrease this damage. The mechanisms are passive when they are independent of the pathogen. They are active when they follow changes in the host caused by the pathogen. Thus for a fungal pathogen, cell walls of a higher plant which are lignified before infection would be a passive defence mechanism if they decreased damage by impeding growth of the fungus. Cell walls known to become lignified as a response to the pathogen would be an active defence mechanism if it were established that this response decreased damage. The papers and discussions at this Advanced Study Institute were about active defence mechanisms in higher plants, mainly econo mically important crop plants, against fungi, bacteria and viruses as pathogens. Taking the microorganisms first it is a truism but one that bears repeating that although plants almost always grow in close association with a wide variety of fungi and bacteria, often of types that can be pathogens, they rarely become diseased, at least not sufficiently so as to attract notice.

Download or read book DNA Repair Protocols written by Daryl S. Henderson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-03 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book, published in 1999 and called DNA Repair Protocols: Eukaryotic Systems, brought together laboratory-based methods for studying DNA damage and repair in diverse eukaryotes: namely, two kinds of yeast, a nematode, a fruit fly, a toad, three different plants, and human and murine cells. This second edition of DNA Repair Protocols covers mammalian cells only and hence its new subtitle, Mammalian Systems. There are two reasons for this fresh emphasis, both of them pragmatic: to cater to the interests of what is now a largely mammalocentric DNA repair field, and to expedite editing and prod- tion of this volume. Although DNA Repair Protocols: Mammalian Systems is a smaller book than its predecessor, it actually contains a greater variety of methods. Fourteen of the book’s thirty-two chapters are entirely new and areas of redundancy present in the first edition have been eliminated here (for example, now just two chapters describe assays for nucleotide excision repair [NER], rather than seven). All eighteen returning chapters have been revised, many of them ext- sively. In order to maintain a coherent arrangement of topics, the four-part p- titioning seen in the first edition was dispensed with and chapters concerned with ionizing radiation damage and DNA strand breakage and repair were re- cated to near the front of the book. Finally, an abstract now heads each chapter.

Download or read book Epigenetic Alterations in Oncogenesis written by Adam R. Karpf and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide an up to date review of the nature and consequences of epigenetic changes in cancer. Epigenetics literally means “above” genetics, and consists of heritable gene expression or other phenotypic states not accounted for by DNA base sequence. Epigenetic changes are now known to make a large contribution to various aspects of tumorigenesis. These changes include alterations in global and promoter specific DNA methylation, activating and repressive histone modifications, and changes in higher order chromatin structures. Each of these topics will be covered in this book.
