Book Chromatin and Chromosome Structure

Download or read book Chromatin and Chromosome Structure written by Hsueh Jei Li and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chromatin and Chromosome Structure consists of chapters that reflect a 1975 seminar course and the reported observations after the session. The seminar is organized for the benefit of both faculty and students in the Biology Ph.D. Program of the City University of New York. This book begins with a presentation of the conformational studies of histones. It then describes the histone-DNA interactions and the subunits isolated either from chromatin or from nuclei. It also explains the post-synthetic modifications of histone structure. Furthermore, the book talks about the chemistry and function of nuclear nonhistone proteins, low molecular weight nuclear RNA, and polytene chromosome structure. The regulation of gene expression in chick oviduct model system and the main features of lampbrush chromosomes are shown as well. Aside from the students and faculty of the above-mentioned university, this compilation will be invaluable as well to other undergraduate and graduate students; professors; and researchers. It will also be a good reference to those who are specializing in chromatin and chromosome studies.

Book Chromosomal Proteins and Gene Expression

Download or read book Chromosomal Proteins and Gene Expression written by Gerald R. Reeck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book stems from an Advanced Study Institute on Chromo somal Proteins and Gene Expression that was held in Sitges, Spain, on September 17-26, 1984. It would be misleading to call this volume a conference proceedings, however. The ASI was not a conference, but a course with diverse activities, only one of which was a set of major presentations by the lecturers. Indeed, the concept of lecturer was intentionally obscured as we all learned from each other through shorter presentations by other participants and through seminars, poster sessions, and small group discussions. Furthermore, many participants found that exchanging ideas outside organized sessions was among the most rewarding aspects of the course. Some even claimed to have profitably probed the intricacies of nucleosome structure and transcriptional regulation while basking in the sun on the beachl Obviously, it is difficult to catch the flavor of such varied proceedings in a book. (I cannot confirm the incident on the beach, never having found time to set foot there. Such is the fate of the director of a meeting. ) The ASI was judged a success -- and enthusiastically so - by most participants. Not only did we deepen our understanding of our scientific field, we made new friends and learned about scientific and nonscientific aspects of life in other countries and about issues that transcend international boundaries in our complex world. We hope that this volume will be as successful as the course was.

Book The Chromosomal Proteins

Download or read book The Chromosomal Proteins written by E Johns and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The HMG Chromosomal Proteins focuses on various research on HMG proteins, particularly their association with active genes. Composed of literature of authors that are divided into 10 chapters, the book starts with the discussions on the history and problems in the study of chromosomal proteins. The text proceeds with the discussions on the occurrence of HMG proteins in eukaryotes; tissue specificity of HMG proteins; and species specificity and evolution of HMG proteins. The book presents techniques that are used to analyze HMG proteins and provides information on the primary structures of different proteins, such as HMG 14 and HMG 17, and the methods for cleaving these proteins. The processes involved in isolating proteins and postsynthetic modifications of their structures are noted, clarified with the study done on the HMG proteins of rainbow trout. The text ends with discussions on the association of HMG proteins with chromatin and nucleosomes and a tabulation of accumulated data. This selection is valuable for readers interested in studying HMG proteins.

Book Histones and Other Basic Nuclear Proteins

Download or read book Histones and Other Basic Nuclear Proteins written by Gary S. Stein and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1989-06-30 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book is a compilation of Professor Lubomir S. Hnilica's twenty years of research experimentally addressing the chemistry and the biological functions of chromosomal proteins. The histones and other nuclear proteins found associated with DNA in a number of tissues and cell types are featured. Lubomir Hnilica played a major role in establishing the extent to which these basic chromosomal polypeptides are conserved and the manner in which they interact with DNA to modify chromatin structure. In addition, non-histone chromosomal protein research is explained, and his technique of applying several biochemical and immunological approaches to the characterization of this complex and heterogeneous class of chromosomal polypeptides is discussed. Highlighted is the use of chemical crosslinking for studying protein/DNA interactions in intact cells. The proteins as well as the structure, organization, and regulation of the genes are also presented.

Book Chromosomal Proteins And Their Role In The Regulation Of Gene Expression

Download or read book Chromosomal Proteins And Their Role In The Regulation Of Gene Expression written by Gary Stein and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chromosomal Proteins and Their Role in the Regulation of Gene Expression examines how chromosomal proteins take part in the regulation of gene expression. This book also looks at the variety of approaches that are used in studying the structural and functional properties of chromosomal proteins, particularly as they relate to the control of transcription. This text is organized into 15 chapters and begins by analyzing the regulation of histone gene expression during the cell cycle and the role of non-histone chromosomal proteins in such regulation. The following chapters focus on the in vitro transcription of the globin gene in mouse fetal liver chromatin; the involvement of non-histone proteins in both positive and negative controls of gene activity; and the role of phosphorylated proteins as regulators of gene activity. The discussion then shifts to the phosphorylation state of non-histone proteins and its correlation with gene transcription; changes in nuclear proteins during embryonic development and cellular differentiation; and the manner by which histones are deposited onto replicating chromosomes. This book also explains the histone methylation, specific phosphorylation sites in lysine rich (H1) histone, and the separation and characterization of nuclear non-histone proteins by means of DNA columns. This book is of interest to advanced undergraduate students, as well as to graduate students and researchers in genetics, cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and microbiology.

Book excerpt: Contemporary views on the structure and function of chromatin are presented and the history of the development of these ideas as well as the nature of the nucleic acid and protein components of chromatin are reviewed. The structure of chromatin is studied at several levels, and its modes of transcription and replication are analyzed. Chromatin provides researchers with a critical evaluation of current knowledge. It combines much information that has never before been assembled, and evaluates and interrelates it in a critical way. This has not been done before so that readers are not only provided with an overview, but with extensive references to the literature (there are about 2000 references in all).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there has been an increasing number of books on various aspects of epigenetics, there has been a gap over the years in books that provide a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of chromatin. Chromatin is the combination of DNA and proteins that make up the genetic material of chromosomes. Its primary function is to package DNA to fit into the cell, to strengthen the DNA to prevent damage, to allow mitosis and meiosis, and to control the expression of genes and DNA replication. The audience for this book is mainly newly established scientists and graduate students. Rather than going into the more specific areas of recent research on chromatin the chapters in this book give a strong, updated groundwork about the topic. Some the fundamentals that this book will cover include the structure of chromatin and biochemistry and the enzyme complexes that manage it.
