Book The Defence and Fall of Singapore

Download or read book The Defence and Fall of Singapore written by Brian Farrell and published by Monsoon Books. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly after midnight on 8 December 1941, two divisions of crack troops of the Imperial Japanese Army began a seaborne invasion of southern Thailand and northern Malaya. Their assault developed into a full-blown advance towards Singapore, the main defensive position of the British Empire in the Far East. The defending British, Indian, Australian and Malayan forces were outmanoeuvred on the ground, overwhelmed in the air and scattered on the sea. By the end of January 1942, British Empire forces were driven back onto the island of Singapore Itself, cut off from further outside help. When the Japanese stormed the island with an an-out assault, the defenders were quickly pushed back into a corner from which there was no escape. Singapore’s defenders finally capitulated on 15 February, to prevent the wholesale pillage of the city itself. Their rapid and total defeat was nothing less than military humiliation and political disaster. Based on the most extensive use yet of primary documents in Britain, Japan, Australia and Singapore, Brian Farrell provides the fullest picture of how and why Singapore fell and its real significance to the outcome of the Second World War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing on from the bestselling true crime stories Three Crooked Kings and Jacks and Jokers, All Fall Down follows Terry Lewis as he becomes police commissioner and the era of corruption at the highest levels of the police and government goes on. As the Queensland police become more connected with their corrupt colleagues in Sydney, the era of heavy drugs and crime also begins. Tony Murphy and Glen Hallahan, two of the original "crooked kings," become more enmeshed with "The Joke" which is run by bagman Jack Herbert. All Fall Down introduces new characters, more extraordinary behavior outside the law by the law, and along the way it charts the meteoric rise of police commissioner Terry Lewis. But with the arrival of the Fitzgerald Inquiry in the late 1980s, many will fall—and it's not always the people who should. Once again award-winning journalist and novelist Matthew Condon has drawn from unprecedented access to Terry Lewis, as well as hundreds of interviews with key players and conspirators to craft the definitive account of the rise—and spectacular fall—of one man, an entire state, and over a generation of corruption.

Book excerpt: What if the core arguments for atheism reveal that God actually exists? With a rising dependence on science and rational thought in today’s culture, religion is often dismissed as “outdated” or “illogical” and atheism is gaining a wider audience. But award-winning author Dr. Frank Turek provides a strong case for how atheists steal logic, reasoning, evidence and science from God in order to support their claims. A result of careful study, Stealing from God exposes the intellectual crimes atheists are committing by taking a closer look at: Causality—how did the universe originate? Reason—what does atheism mean for truth? Information & Intentionality—God’s signature in creation Morality—objective morality without God Evil—is evil a contradiction for atheism? Science—how theism makes science possible And a powerful 4-point case for Christianity No matter your stance on religion or atheism, this book will prove a thought-provoking and compelling read. With clear, well-researched arguments, Stealing from God is a refreshing resource to bolster your faith, help you engage with those who disagree, and open your eyes to the truth of religion and atheism. “An unassailable case for the truth of Christianity.” —Eric Metaxas, New York Times bestselling author “Provides powerful and clear answers to questions of enduring importance for every thinking person.” —Dr. John Lennox, professor of mathematics at Oxford University “Will change the way you think about the world and equip you to defend what you believe.” —J.
