Book excerpt: Christie Whitman was a freeholder from a small New Jersey county who became a politician with national credentials. Some think she could become the first woman president of the U.S. This biography reveals how this no-nonsense politician has confounded the predictions of the media and political establishment to become both a political player and a certifiable celebrity. Running for governor in 1993, she vowed to cut N.J. taxes by 30%, and she kept her word. This book provides insight into her decision to make this controversial move and shows how her closest advisers have helped shape both her policies and her public image. B&W photos.

Book It s My Party Too

Download or read book It s My Party Too written by Christine Todd Whitman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2005-01-27 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christine Whitman offers an insider’s view of the corrosive effects—on the party and the country as a whole—of the rise of zealous conservatism. She tells many stories from the front lines of her battles with conservatives, as well as those of other moderate Republicans, and argues that the rise of this bullying faction—as opposed to being the voting juggernaut party leaders have considered it—has kept the Republican party from building a true voting majority. It has also, she argues, pushed the polarization of the electorate to an appalling extreme. Each chapter focuses on the key hot-button issues that were the most contentious battlegrounds between moderates and conservatives in 2005, and the areas where she thinks the conservatives took the party in the wrong direction: race relations, abortion rights, the environment, taxes, and international affairs. In each of these areas, Whitman tells stories about how in her own career she has been able to make great progress by taking a moderate approach—by finding what she calls “the productive middle,” such as in her unprecedented admission that racial profiling was indeed happening on New Jersey’s highways. This is a fascinating insider’s account of how politics happens on the ground and behind the closed doors, with a message that will speak powerfully to an all too silent moderate Republican majority.

Book excerpt: "Shenanigans" is a brilliantly written book about the Machiavellian maneuverings between the most powerful political forces in New Jersey. Peter Christensen, who himself was an integral player in the story, recounts how Governor Christie Todd Whitman and her allies fought the largest unions in New Jersey in an attempt to keep her promise to reduce taxes by shell-gaming the pensions funds of over 500,000 New Jersey state workers and teachers. Mr Christensen's captivating style accurately depicts each calculated step of the political and legal wranglings which finally culminated in a surprising compromise that will burden New Jersey tax payers for decades to come. as a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, Mr. Christensen lucidly chronicles the inner workings of the state pensions system and allows the reader a rare glimpse of how billions of state pension dollars have been used in a political numbers game." John D. Marshall, F.S.A. "Shenanigans indeed! These events, this book, and this author present individually and collectively an odyssey like no other I have ever experienced. The events surround a massive pension raid by a popular governor on one of the nation's largest and arguably best public pension funds. The book is impeccably written and true to the facts. Presented in colorful, often humorous prose it accomplishes the impossible task of reducing the morass of actuary mumbo-jumbo to a level that the most unsophisticated mathephoic can understand and deal with. The author, who is one of the most unforgettable characters I have ever met, has become my close friend. Peter Christensen is the consummate actuary. he not only has mastered this arcane art/science but he can communicate this mastery to the lay person. I recommend the book without reservation. Having lived it I know it to be true. Having read it I know it can capture the interest of readers of all backgrounds and vocations." Harry W. Baldwin Chairman N.J. Teachers Pension and Annuity Fund

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many areas women have earned the equality we've been fighting for. We've broken through glass ceilings and achieved great success. We've shown that we can prosper by our own means. And we've become influential, respected leaders. Yet many of us find ourselves unhappy, anxious, overwhelmed. Where's the pot of gold at the end of our "I can do it just like a man" rainbow? The problem is that while we can be as successful as a man, we don't get there through a masculine approach. Being a "damsel in distress" is not the way to make your dreams come true, but neither is being the hyper-aggressive Alpha Bitch. In this New York Times bestselling book, transformation leaders Christy Whitman and Rebecca Grado reveal how when women try to claim power through a forceful "take no prisoners" approach it ultimately works against us and undermines our best efforts to create the life of our dreams. In fact, wielding Alpha Bitch force is ironically disempowering, because it introduces conflict, struggle, and competition into our personal and professional relationships, blocking women from creating the life we desire. How do you change from being a controlling, competitive, and disruptive Alpha Bitch to being an Empowered Female who is allowing, collaborative, and balanced? Enter the Laws of the Universe: • The Law of Attraction • The Law of Allowing • The Law of Pure Potentiality • The Law of Oneness • The Law of Balance and Harmony • The Law of Sufficiency and Abundance Taming the Alpha Bitch will show you how to use these laws to create freedom, joy, and abundance in your life. By using this knowledge, you put yourself in the ideal position for attracting those things you want with ease and effortlessness, not struggle and pain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How American race law provided a blueprint for Nazi Germany Nazism triumphed in Germany during the high era of Jim Crow laws in the United States. Did the American regime of racial oppression in any way inspire the Nazis? The unsettling answer is yes. In Hitler's American Model, James Whitman presents a detailed investigation of the American impact on the notorious Nuremberg Laws, the centerpiece anti-Jewish legislation of the Nazi regime. Contrary to those who have insisted that there was no meaningful connection between American and German racial repression, Whitman demonstrates that the Nazis took a real, sustained, significant, and revealing interest in American race policies. As Whitman shows, the Nuremberg Laws were crafted in an atmosphere of considerable attention to the precedents American race laws had to offer. German praise for American practices, already found in Hitler's Mein Kampf, was continuous throughout the early 1930s, and the most radical Nazi lawyers were eager advocates of the use of American models. But while Jim Crow segregation was one aspect of American law that appealed to Nazi radicals, it was not the most consequential one. Rather, both American citizenship and antimiscegenation laws proved directly relevant to the two principal Nuremberg Laws—the Citizenship Law and the Blood Law. Whitman looks at the ultimate, ugly irony that when Nazis rejected American practices, it was sometimes not because they found them too enlightened, but too harsh. Indelibly linking American race laws to the shaping of Nazi policies in Germany, Hitler's American Model upends understandings of America's influence on racist practices in the wider world.

Book A Skeptic s Guide to Writers Houses

Download or read book A Skeptic s Guide to Writers Houses written by Anne Trubek and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-07-11 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many ways to show our devotion to an author besides reading his or her works. Graves make for popular pilgrimage sites, but far more popular are writers' house museums. What is it we hope to accomplish by trekking to the home of a dead author? We may go in search of the point of inspiration, eager to stand on the very spot where our favorite literary characters first came to life—and find ourselves instead in the house where the author himself was conceived, or where she drew her last breath. Perhaps it is a place through which our writer passed only briefly, or maybe it really was a longtime home—now thoroughly remade as a decorator's show-house. In A Skeptic's Guide to Writers' Houses Anne Trubek takes a vexed, often funny, and always thoughtful tour of a goodly number of house museums across the nation. In Key West she visits the shamelessly ersatz shrine to a hard-living Ernest Hemingway, while meditating on his lost Cuban farm and the sterile Idaho house in which he committed suicide. In Hannibal, Missouri, she walks the fuzzy line between fact and fiction, as she visits the home of the young Samuel Clemens—and the purported haunts of Tom Sawyer, Becky Thatcher, and Injun' Joe. She hits literary pay-dirt in Concord, Massachusetts, the nineteenth-century mecca that gave home to Hawthorne, Emerson, and Thoreau—and yet could not accommodate a surprisingly complex Louisa May Alcott. She takes us along the trail of residences that Edgar Allan Poe left behind in the wake of his many failures and to the burned-out shell of a California house with which Jack London staked his claim on posterity. In Dayton, Ohio, a charismatic guide brings Paul Laurence Dunbar to compelling life for those few visitors willing to listen; in Cleveland, Trubek finds a moving remembrance of Charles Chesnutt in a house that no longer stands. Why is it that we visit writers' houses? Although admittedly skeptical about the stories these buildings tell us about their former inhabitants, Anne Trubek carries us along as she falls at least a little bit in love with each stop on her itinerary and finds in each some truth about literature, history, and contemporary America.
