Book Philosophical Idealism and Christian Belief

Download or read book Philosophical Idealism and Christian Belief written by Alan P.F. Sell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-09-01 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is now renewed and growing interest in post-Hegelian idealism, which was in its heyday at the end of the nineteenth century. This book is concerned with the religious and socio-ethical aspects in the writings of selected idealists. It addresses the question: was post-Hegelian philosophical idealism, in its friendliest guise, more a help than a hindrance to the expression of Christian convictions and the articulation of Christian doctrines? In pursuit of an answer, the author discusses the writings of seven British idealists who, if not in every case entirely doctrinally orthodox, were by no means unkindly disposed towards the Christian faith: T. H. Green, Edward Caird, J. R. Illingworth, Henry Jones, A. S. Pringle-Pattison, C. C. J. Webb, and A. E. Taylor. The book opens with an account of the formative intellectual influences upon the seven idealists and their consequent philosophical positions. There follow chapters on God, ethics and society, and Christian doctrine. The conclusion passes some positive and negative judgments upon post-Hegelian idealism in so far as it bears upon, or expresses, Christian belief. It also broaches the underlying question of the method of Christian thought vis ^ vis the general intellectual environment.

Book Idealism and Christian Philosophy

Download or read book Idealism and Christian Philosophy written by Steven B. Cowan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it comes to contemporary philosophical problems, metaphysical idealism-or Berkeleyan immaterialism-is not taken seriously by most philosophers, not to mention the typical Christian layperson. This state of affairs deserves some attempt at rectification, since Idealism has considerable explanatory power as a metaphysical thesis and provides numerous practical and theoretical benefits. Such thinkers as George Berkeley and Jonathan Edwards believed that Idealism is especially amenable to a Christian perspective, both because it provides a plausible way of conceptualizing the world from a theistic standpoint and because it effectively addresses skeptical challenges to the Christian faith. The contributors to this volume explore a variety of ways in which the case can be made for this claim, including potential solutions to philosophical problems related to the nature of time, the ontology of physical objects, the mind-body problem, and the nature of science.

From a pampered princess, to a wilderness in the sun, to a prison in the desert, to a place in the heart of every person she happens to meet. This is the story of her sojourn on the Earth. This is her struggle for freedom and survival. The Apache Indians call her Child of the Sun. Ruben Hawken called her wife and lover and the mother of my children. She's a loving nurturing spirit with the power to influence for good. She heals, that's what she does ... Myra is more then victorious but not without setbacks and hardship and the patience of Job. You've got to love Myra, can't help yourself ... Don't you find that just a little suspicious? I'm a cynic so I certainly do ... But what do I know? I can't seem to get past that ridiculous Nutsoid sign.

Book The Impact of Idealism Volume 4 Religion

Download or read book The Impact of Idealism Volume 4 Religion written by Nicholas Boyle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first study of its kind, The Impact of Idealism assesses the impact of classical German philosophy on science, religion and culture. This fourth volume explores German Idealism's impact on theology and religious ideas in the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries. With contributions from leading scholars, this collection not only demonstrates the vast range of Idealism's theological influence across different centuries, countries, continents, traditions and religions, but also, in doing so, provides fresh insight into the original ideas and themes with which Kant, Hegel, Fichte, Schelling and others were concerned. As well as tracing out the Idealist influence in the work of nineteenth- and twentieth-century theologians, philosophers of religion, and theological traditions, from Schleiermacher, to Karl Barth, to Radical Orthodoxy, the essays in this collection bring each debate up to date with a strong focus on Idealism's contemporary relevance.

Book Schelling versus Hegel

Download or read book Schelling versus Hegel written by John Laughland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In tracing Friedrich von Schelling's long philosophical development, John Laughland examines in particular his disentanglement from German idealism and his reaction, later in life, against Hegel. He argues that this story has relevance beyond the facts themselves and that it explains much about the direction philosophy took in the century between the French Revolution and the rise of Communism. Schelling's development turned principally on the related questions of human liberty and the creation. Following a sharp disagreement with his old friend Hegel over the Phenomenology in 1807, Schelling wrote a short but brilliant essay on human freedom in 1809, after which he never published another word. In the remaining decades of his life (d. 1854) Schelling developed in an increasingly conservative and Christian direction, preoccupied with the relationship between Christianity and metaphysics. In numerous lectures and unpublished works, he attacked what he saw as the hubris and artificiality of Hegelian rationalism. However the path against which Schelling warned was the one which philosophy finally took. Schelling was determined to show how philosophy (especially ontology) explained and was explained by Christianity, and that both had been damaged by modern rationalism. But Hegel’s Marxist epigones who attended his later lectures scoffed and Hegelianism triumphed. This is an elegantly written and engaging study in the history of ideas of a philosopher on the losing side.

Book IDEALISM Perfect Idealism Defined Within The Already But Not Yet

Download or read book IDEALISM Perfect Idealism Defined Within The Already But Not Yet written by donald perry and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-11-25 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This commentary on the book of Revelation is from a Reformed Orthodox Idealistic and Futuristic point of view. Previously I have wrestled with different Preterism and Redirectionalism views. However, once I fully understood salvation from the Reformed perspective the Lord saw fit to give me better understanding of the book of Revelation and Eschatology. Previously I was under the belief of OSAS Charles Stanley heresy. Concerning the eschatological perspective: We know that the Lord promised the seven churches in Revelation that He was coming to them, and that the faithful churches would remain. Thus His word was fulfilled. Yet, the resurrection change of 1 Cor. 15 for the living did not happen as far as they could tell. This means that the second coming is now in the present idealistically while we wait. Therefore, we sanctify ourselves and the church for when He shall appear. When He comes He will make an end of sin, our sin nature forever, and pain and death will end

Book British Idealism A History

Download or read book British Idealism A History written by W. J. Mander and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-05-12 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W. J. Mander presents the first ever synoptic history of British Idealism, the philosophical school which dominated English-language philosophy from the 1860s through to the early years of the following century. Offering detailed examination of the origins, growth, development, and decline of this mode of thinking, British Idealism: A History restores to its proper place this now almost wholly forgotten period of philosophical history. Through clear explanation of its characteristic concepts and doctrines, and paying close attention to the published works of its philosophers, the volume provides a full-length history of this vital school for those wishing to fill a gap in their knowledge of the history of British Philosophy, while its detailed notes and bibliography will guide the more dedicated scholar who wishes to examine further their distinctive brand of philosophy. By covering all major philosophers involved in the movement (not merely the most famous ones like Bradley, Green, McTaggart, and Bosanquet but the lesser known figures like the Caird brothers, Henry Jones, A.S.Pringle-Pattison, and R.B.Haldane) and by looking at all branches of philosophy (not just the familiar topics of ethics, political thought, and metaphysics but also the less well documented work on logic, religion, aesthetics, and the history of philosophy), British Idealism: A History brings out the movement's complex living pattern of unity and difference; something which other more superficial accounts have tended to obscure.
