Book The Path of Labor Theme

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Path of Labor; Theme: Christianity and the World's Workers Those who labored with such desire and earnestness for the selection of a theme for the textbooks for 1918-1919, that should present not only a vital but a paramount issue to the church at this time when only great realities and issues claim serious thought, chose better than they knew when they elected Christianity and the World's Workers. It is generally conceded that the most decisive single factor in the world contest today is that of Labor. That there is always danger of over emphasis by any group having the power in the body politic is axiomatic. It becomes therefore even more important now than when the theme was suggested (nearly two years ago) for our church constituency to address itself to such a study of economic relationships as shall open the way for a more complete understanding of the fundamental rights and facts involved, that a basis of thinking may be attained whereby the mutual welfare of all society may be advanced along the line of a Christian democracy. "Christian" because the body of influence set in motion by Christ is the greatest spiritual force in the life of humanity, and upon it depends the world's hope for redemption from oppression, injustice and war. At the outset of our thinking on this theme we might profitably seek a definition of the term "Christianity," for this word which calls so inspiringly to millions of people carries a sinister reminder of pogroms and persecutions to millions of others. The Rev. Dr. Charles Jefferson of New York City, says: "Christianity is a large word, and it cannot be defined in a sentence for the reason that it is used in different meanings by different persons, and also by the same person on different occasions, and for different purposes. Book The Church and Labor Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Church and Labor Classic Reprint written by Charles Stelzle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and Labor When the writing of this book was first considered, it was a question as to whether the discussion should deal with methods of work or with the spirit of the Church and Labor. It was decided that the latter is of greater importance, hence this selection of the treatment of the subject. It is frankly acknowledged that better things might truthfully have been said about the Church and worse things about Labor, but there is already considerable literature telling about what the Church has done and what La bor has left undone, especially when the question is discussed from the viewpoint of the Church. This book is written largely from the standpoint of Labor. An attempt is made to present the spirit which under lies the labor movement, and to show that. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Union, or the Divided Church Made One And here it will be permitted by the reader, and will be suflicient for the writer, to assume, that the oneness intended is, at least, a union of affection. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye love one another. Every instance of division, therefore, which ia capacitates Christians for reciprocating sincere expressions Of Christian love with any part of the Church, is an unequivocal breach Of this great law Of unity. Let the subject Of differ ence be ever so trivial in itself, and the breach apparently ever so narrow, still, if it reach down to the heart, it is schism: or let it embrace ever so many particulars, and some Of them even of considerable importance, still if it leave the heart entire, and allow a visible interchange of Christian offices, the sin is absent. The law of Christ on the subject sis-se definite, that we can lay our finger, so to speak, on the very point where the sin of schism begins; and, by comparing the existing state of the Christian Church with the express requirements of that law, we can determine, with all the'exactness of a chemical analysis, the places and the de grees in which it exists.
