Keeping Judaism Alive After 100 Years in Exile A century after being expelled from Portugal, cryptoJews in Mexico, false converts to Christianity, could not speak of their beliefs for fear of becoming embroiled in the imprisonment, torture, and death in flames that characterized the Inquisition. Without written texts, the Jewish liturgy lost, clans of cryptoJews created a unique body of religious poetry, connecting them to the Laws of Moses, seeking redemption from sin, or hoping for an escape from their embittered lives. The Carvajal clan was led by Luis el Mozo, an alumbrado, a mystic, and his Judaizing sisters. Once discovered to be secretly practicing Judaism, years of suffering at the hands of the Inquisitors were meticulously recorded in the transcripts of their long demeaning trials. The Carvajal's friends, spouses, children and grandchildren were implicated as Judaizers, with many being reconciled by the Church to secular authorities to be burned alive at massive public ceremonies. The burning of Luis and his sisters was the main attraction for cheering crowds at the auto de fé of 1596 in Mexico City. The cruelty of the Inquisitors was matched by their attention to legal detail and testimonies made at trial. Buried within thousands of pages of transcripts, hiding in library special collections of rare books around the world are the only remnants of the religious poetry that sustained cryptoJews hiding in Mexico. Anthology uncovers these hidden treasures! Book excerpt: Two strands, one indigenous, the other imposed, pro-duce the poetic and cultural tensions that give form to the work of five contemporary Mexican poets -- All Chumacero, Efrain Huerta, Jaime Sabines, Ruben Bonifaz Nuno, and Rosario Castellanos. Although all five are significant figures, only Castellanos has yet been widely studied in the United States, primarily for her novels and her relations with the feminist movement. In spite of a number of rather basic differences in their work, these poets share and write within a complicated culture rooted in both the pre-Hispanic and the European traditions. Their poetry reflects this in its emphasis on death as a constant presence and in the echoes of both Aztec ritual poetry and European poetry. Although apparently very different formally and thematically, the five share a number of concerns. Each of them writes out of a contradictory inner tension; each is preoccupied with the effort to shape language as part of a personal voyage of discovery; each is haunted by death and seeks realization or plenitude through love of some kind. And each of them, ultimately, finds there is no escape. As Frank Dauster concludes, "The poetry of Mexico, like its people and its society, reflects the fusion of two worlds, and these complex poets of the double strand operate freely and imaginatively within it." Although addressed primarily to specialists in Latin American literature, The Double Strand also speaks to those interested in the complex interaction between two widely differing cultural heritages, and in the rich fusion this blending produces in Mexican letters.

"Now, I turned to my left and just as I straightened out the Toyota's path, I heard some popping sounds, sort of like firecrackers exploding in the distance. In that our windows were up, the sounds were not very distinguishable. However, for some strange reason, I reacted so quickly that it certainly was not a conscious forethought. My head went down as I bent over forward and slightly to my right, just in time to avoid having a bullet hit the back of my head, as it passed through the back glass. Then, in a split second, I realized why I had unconsciously reacted that way and... Poetry is, simply stated, just another modality of expression of ideas, feelings, opinions and visions. Like any other mode of expression, it can be useful, if produced by the mind of a skillful and perceptive person. However, the very best writers not only consult their mind, which is the lead part of the soul, but also are influenced by an enlivened human spirit. Some are endowed with a thin slice of divine creativity, that which can be used to produce a very good quality product and it will endure over time. It is my hope and desire that herein, there is some of the latter type, which is mentioned here. Professionally speaking, as an educator and psychologist, I hope that a degree of multifarious perceptions has been shown in the writings contained here in this book. As a result, Matt has a keen sense of the value of education, which he learned from his grandmother Mandy and other life experiences during the time he lived in Alabama. Matt's years as a child growing up in rural Alabama during 1930s-50s, at best was turbulent times for young African American boys, yet he rode horses with his "white friend", "J", a White kid that lived nearby at the time. Because of Matt's faith, taught to him by his grandmother Mandy, he was not afraid to take chances and try new things. At age 19 Matt went to work in Pensacola, Florida. Later that same year, he bought a 1939, pretty green Chevy. Matt was never deterred by life decisions, and still believes it is his faith that has brought him through many ordeals in his life. He has stepped out on "faith", and prevailed in turning what would have toppled the average big city kid; but not Matt, he turns negatives into positives, and perseveres as he gets up again, and again.
