Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Government and the Sabbath The teaching of this little book is designed to be fundamental. It should result in advantage to the Individual, the Family, the Church, the State and the Nation. Its purpose is to present to the mind of the consecrated worker, the larger mean ing of the petition in the Lord's Prayer, - Thy Kingdom Come. Its philosophy is, -that. It is the aggregate of all right teaching in the past, together with the pouring out of the vials of God's wrath, that has procured for us all that is desirable in our present civilization: and, it will require the aggregate of all right teaching in the future, together with the pouring out of the re mainder of God's wrath, to usher in the King dom of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Itsbelief is, that, if all professing Christians, in true loyalty to Christ, would immediately accept its teaching, and in every sphere of human life and activity, act accordingly: the world would at once be dazzled, with the first gush of the re splendent light of the dawn of the Millennial day. The purified - united Church of Christ, - is the great angel, that has the power to bind Satan in our great country, within the brief time-limit of any given period of twelve months. Let him that readeth say, amen so it shall be. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives on the Sabbath presents in point-counterpoint form the four most common views of the Sabbath commandment that have arisen throughout church history, representing the major positions held among Christians today. Skip MacCarty (Andrews University) defends the Seventh-day view which argues the fourth commandment is a moral law of God requiring us to keep the seventh day (Saturday) holy. It must therefore remain the day of rest and worship for Christians. Jospeh A Pipa (Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary) backs the Christian Sabbath view which reasons that ever since the resurrection of Christ, the one day in seven to be kept holy is the first day of the week. Craig L. Blomberg (Denver Seminary) supports the Fulfillment view which says that since Christ has brought the true Sabbath rest into the present, the Sabbath commands of the Old Testament are no longer binding on believers. Charles P. Arand (Concordia Seminary) upholds the Lutheran view that the Sabbath commandment was given to Jews alone and does not concern Christians. Rest and worship are still required but not tied to a particular day.

Book The Christian Sabbath

Download or read book The Christian Sabbath written by Terry L. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There can be no doubt that a seismic shift has taken place within the English-speaking world over the last sixty years regarding what used to be referred to as 'the Christian Sabbath.' What was considered to be a day of rest, worship and holy activity is now just like any other day of the week -- one for the shopping mall, the sports stadium, or for some selfindulgent 'me-time.' What has led to this transformation? Or, more importantly, how ought we to think of the first day of the week? Were our forefathers correct in their understanding of 'the Lord's Day' or 'the Christian Sabbath'? And what did the Lord Jesus Christ mean when he said that 'the Sabbath was made for man' and that he was 'Lord of the Sabbath'? Terry Johnson investigates these questions and the issues raised by them. He draws out the teaching of Scripture and illustrates it from the writings of many of the great teachers of the Christian church. He then sets out practical recommendations to help today's Christians experience the benefits and blessings of the special day God has given us.

Book excerpt: Elegant, passionate, and filled with the love of God's creation, Abraham Joshua Heschel's The Sabbath has been hailed as a classic of Jewish spirituality ever since its original publication--and has been read by thousands of people seeking meaning in modern life. In this brief yet profound meditation on the meaning of the Seventh Day, Heschel, one of the most widely respected religious leaders of the twentieth century, introduced the influential idea of an 'architecture of holiness" that appears not in space but in time. Judaism, he argues, is a religion of time: it finds meaning not in space and the materials things that fill it but in time and the eternity that imbues it, so that 'the Sabbaths are our great catherdrals.'
