Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Doctrine? I personally believe that the church has done a poor job in teaching doctrine to the present generation. I was brought up as a young person in the 1960's and 70's. We had a weekly class that taught us the doctrine of the Christian faith. This is sadly missing from many churches of today. What do I mean by doctrine? W. T. Conner, in his seminal work, Christian Doctrine, defines doctrine this way: "Christian Doctrine is that line of study that undertakes to set out the teachings of the Christian religion, It is the organized exposition of the main doctrines of Christianity. It is the setting out in more or less complete and systematic form of the ideas necessary to the understanding of the Christian religion." He goes on to speak of the great need of doctrine. He describes 5 reasons for the necessity of Christian doctrine. (1) The Nature of Man Necessitates Doctrine. "Men will think about religion; and when a man thinks about religion, what he thinks is his religious doctrine. ...There can be no such thing as religion without some elements of doctrine." (2) New Testament Christianity Puts Large Emphasis on Teaching. (3) A Knowledge of the Truth is Necessary in the Christian Life. (4) A Knowledge of Truth is Necessary to Propagate the Gospel. (5) A Knowledge of Truth is Necessary to a Defense of the Gospel. Basically doctrine is what Christians believe about their religion. I have sought to give the main beliefs about the Christian religion in poetic form. I have also included Scripture passages to serve as a foundation to this teaching on biblical doctrine. This should be a help for people of all ages. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 gives us a wonderful framework on the importance of learning biblical truths and teaching them to the younger generation and also living by them. 4 "Israel, remember this! The LORD-and the LORD alone-is our God. 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6 Never forget these commands that I am giving you today. 7 Teach them to your children. Repeat them when you are at home and when you are away, when you are resting and when you are working. 8 Tie them on your arms and wear them on your foreheads as a reminder. 9 Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates.

Book excerpt: In January, 1987, at age 48, I was stricken with ulcerative colitis. I was gravely ill and on the brink of a major organ failure. All my intestines were severely inflamed because of a medication I had taken in order to treat ankylosing spondylitis. (A form of arthritis of the spine). I spent twelve days in a hospital due to my illness, and a couple nights after my release from the hospital I was in our spare bedroom praying that God would touch and heal me. And during that time of prayer I had an encounter with the Lord God, and that encounter was unlike anything I had ever experienced. I did not see God, nor did I hear His voice, but I felt the Lord's power and presence over-shadowing me in a way in which I go wanting for words in order to fully explain that experience. My encounter with God was similar to that of Job only in that God opened my mind and revealed unto me who I was, and who God the Father really is. The Holy Spirit revealed unto me the enormous sin of pride, and a need for me to repent and change my sinful attitude. Thank You, Lord, for Your eternal mercy! Soon after my spiritual awakening, I began to have thoughts come into my mind in a way that I had not ever experienced. The thoughts were Biblical truths and principles that were often formulated in rhyme, and they were occurring randomly day and night. But soon I realized I was forgetting the rhymes, sometimes within minutes of their occurrence, then I realized there was a necessity to quickly write my thought down; sometimes I would write them on a small piece of scratch paper. For the most part, but with a few exceptions, each page of this book contains rhymes and axioms in the order they initially came into my mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let's read the acrostic of Jesus together To help you to love him, so he is your treasure. We’ll read it, rap it, or sing it—it’s fun! Till Jesus comes back and his kingdom has come. He’s the Alpha and Omega, from A to Z; We pray you see from this book, "Jesus came for me!" The Acrostic of Jesus is fun to read over and over again, and a brilliant tool to help kids gain a greater understanding of Christ. Young readers will learn “Christology”—the study of Jesus. The more we learn about Jesus, the more reasons we have to love him! By giving children an alphabetical list of the names and attributes of Jesus written with a rhyming beat, Jonathan Gibson and Timothy Brindle make The Acrostic of Jesus fun to read and simple to memorize. Each characteristic, A to Z, weaves together a beautiful picture of who Jesus is and why he came to earth. Using the alphabet to teach about God has a rich history in the Bible, especially in the Psalms and Lamentations. Several of the psalms—notably Psalm 119—begin with letters of the Hebrew alphabet, forming an acrostic that spells out the entire alphabet. The authors make learning Christology easy and enjoyable. Their book shows Jesus as he is, not “just to know about him more in our brains, but to know him as the God of glory who reigns.” Illustrated by C. S. Fritz, The Acrostic of Jesus is the second in the series, An Acrostic Theology for Kids, introducing children ages five to eleven to systematic theology uniquely on their age level.

Book The Life of Christian Doctrine

Download or read book The Life of Christian Doctrine written by Mike Higton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-07-09 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lives of Christian churches are shaped by doctrinal theology. That is, they are shaped by practices in which ideas about God and God's ways with the world are developed, discussed and deployed. This book explores those practices, and asks why they matter for communities seeking to follow Jesus. Taking the example of the Church of England, this book highlights the embodied, affective and located reality of all doctrinal practices – and the biases and exclusions that mar them. It argues that doctrinal theology can in principle help the church know God better, even though doctrinal theologians do not know God better than their fellow believers. It claims that it can help the church to hear in Scripture challenges to its life, including to its doctrinal theology. It suggests that doctrinal disagreement is inevitable, but that a better quality of doctrinal disagreement is possible. And, finally, it argues that, by encouraging attention to voices that have previously been ignored, doctrinal theology can foster the ongoing discovery of God's surprising work.

The author seeks “to encourage and equip Christian faith communities to move beyond the decades-long stalemate over human sexuality and gender identity” because “Queer gifts emerge in Christian communities when lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people no longer feel compelled to justify their presence in those communities.” Useful in both seminary classrooms and in congregational settings, the book is a contribution to the still-emerging field of queer theology, translating the rigors of scholarly research into transforming proposals for faith communities.
