Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers for War Time: Christianity and War Great britain is engaged in a war from which, as we believe, there was offered to our nation no honourable way of escape. The desire of all who love their country is to serve it in the hour of its need, and so to live and labour that those who have fallen in its service may not have died in vain. While this may suffice to make immediate duty clear, the war remains in the deepest sense a challenge to Christian thought. The present bitter struggle between nations which for centuries have borne the Christian name indicates some deep-seated failure to understand the principles of Christ and to apply them to human affairs. This series of papers embodies an attempt to reach, by common thought, discussion and prayer, a truer understanding of the meaning of Christianity and of the mission of the Church to the individual, to society and to the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Duty at Home in Time of War What ought to be the Christian's attitude to wards war in general? This question must be exercising many hearts of earnest Christians to day, men and women who have taken Christ as the Master not only of their outward life, but also of the very springs of their soul, in heart and mind and will. Our Lord has taught us to be meek and gentle, to quench the ames of anger, to be ready to forgive. He says to us, Love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you; that ye may be sons of your Father which is in heaven. And He teaches us, Resist not him that is evil. Book Christianity and the War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christianity and the War Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and the War We give our own experience on the subject under consideration in the belief that it reflects the experience of a large number in the Christian community, and this with-5 out much regard to sectarian relations. We suddenly find ourselves without any matured principles to guide us in the most trying crisis in the history of the nation and we can recall instances in which, with more or less of explicitness, we have committed ourselves to a policy which a severe test assures us to be wholly inadequate. Hence the change of conviction and, to a much greater extent, of feeling which has come over us. We are free to confess that We have been in the habit of over-estimating the civilization of the age and the country in which we live. Years ago we learned from Gibbon what might be expected of barbarians. But we indulged the hope that the Goths and Vandals belonged only to the early time. We did not expect that an Alaric could come from the land that had given birth to a Washington. The humilia-a ting fact of slavery, of property in man, was indeed before us; and a class of teachers insisted with tolerably severe logic, that a man who would appropriate to his own use the unpaid toil of another, could scruple at nothing. But we had personal acquaintances among slave-holders, and knew that such. An inference, however conclusive as a matter of logic, was not just in point of fact. We could give the names of slave-holders who, aside from what is involved in the fact of being slave-holders, would neither lie, nor steal, nor do an inhuman act. Book Christianity and War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christianity and War Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and War But nobody in all the world feels the load of such questions like the ministers of Christ and the preachers of His gospel. Be assured, my Friend, that the Christian people and their ministers in Serbia "live not by bread alone," but also search sincerely and painfully for the answers to the above questions. On that account allow me both as a minister of the gospel and as an eye-witness of the war to give the same answer to you that I have given to my Serbian flock, impelled as I am by the same spiritual needs as all religious men of the Old and New Worlds. Where is Christianity? That is the first question. My answer is: Only there where suffering is. If I say that, I do not mean unmerited suffering only, but merited suffering too. For all suffering purifies and ennobles. Suffering for righteousness is always suffering caused by others and suffering for unrighteousness is always suffering caused by ourselves. The righteous man always suffers, either for those who have lived before him, or for those who will live after him. The cause of a good man's suffering lies outside him; the cause of a bad man's suffering lies within him. Just as suffering strengthens the good man in his goodness, so it weakens the bad man in his badness. The man who never suffered either in soul or in body was never a Christian man. The history of Christianity is the history of suffering in all its myriad forms. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Call of a World Task in War Time, Vol. 1: The Demands Which Are Being Made in These War Years for a New Expression of International Christianity Foremost among the profound and urgent messages which God is uttering to His Church in this awful hour, is the clarion call for reality in religion. To that call let us direct our first attention. We are moving into the new world order through blood and fire. It was little more than yesterday that an in uential New York daily wrote thus of the pros peets of universal peace: It was nearer last year than it was the year before; it is nearer this year than it was last year; it is nearer now, today, than it was on the first day of the present year, and, with an advancing step, that has never gone backward, through all these years, the prophecy is safe and beautiful that we are marching swiftly into the vast open of universal peace. Book The Christian Man the Church and the War Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian Man the Church and the War Classic Reprint written by Robert E. Speer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Man, the Church and the War There are three difierent courses open to the Christian man to-day. One is to throw his Christian idealism overboard, and post pone his effort to adjust religion to life until the war is over. A second is to hold fast to his Christian idealism and to repudiate the real world he is living in. The third is to take Paul's counsel and seek to behave as a citizen in a manner worthy of the Gospel, be lieving that his present duty is to be a Chris tian not in some other world but in this one, and that this duty can be done in the highest loyalty both to humanity and to Christ. This little book is an attempt at a statement of this third course. If the attempt is not a success, neither is life. This book was released on 2017-02-21 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What the Bible Teaches About War and the Christian's Attitude in the Present Crisis But the conquest of Canaan is only partially completed under Joshua, and hence war continues even into David's time. And here again is it often incited by God, who sometimes indicates the plan of warfare, gives signal instances of His presence and favor, and regards with jealousy ascription of the victory to any other than Himself. He teaches my hands to war, says David, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms. Thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle; thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me. Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O Lord, among the nations, and sing praises unto thy name. (ps. 39, And so the history continues as every reader of the Old Testament is aware. It is largely a recital of the wars in which Jehovah is the aggressor, either on behalf of His people Israel, or against them when their conduct requires punishment.
