Book excerpt: From the author of the acclaimed Simply Christian and Surprised by Hope comes a book that addresses the question that has plagued humans for centuries—what is our purpose? As Christians, what are we to do with that ambiguous time between baptism and the funeral? It's easy to become preoccupied with who gets into heaven; the real challenge is how we are going to live in the here and now. Wright dispels the common misconception that Christian living is nothing more than a checklist of dos and don'ts. Nor is it a prescription to "follow your heart" wherever it may lead. Instead, After You Believe reveals the Bible's call for a revolution—a transformation of character that takes us beyond our earthly pursuit of money, sex, and power into a virtuous state of living that allows us to reflect God and live more worshipful, fulfilling lives. We are all spiritual seekers, intuitively knowing there is more to life than we suspect. This is a book for anyone who is hoping there is something more while we're here on Earth. There is. We are being called to join the revolution, and Wright insightfully encourages readers to find new purpose and clarity by taking us on an eye-opening journey through key biblical passages that promise to radically alter the work of the church and the direction of our lives.

Book Christian Aspects of Faith and Duty Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christian Aspects of Faith and Duty Classic Reprint written by John James Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Aspects of Faith and Duty This volume will sufficiently commend itself to those who read it. But the publisher has thought that a brief introduction of it to the American public would aid its circulation. Having fallen in with an English copy of the work during my summer vacation, from which I received great instruction and delight, it was with peculiar satisfaction that I found it in process of republication on my return to New-York. We have seen nothing from Mr. Tayler's pen before, justifying the enthusiasm with which his English brethren are accustomed to speak of him. But we understand from this volume, how full his claims are to the respect and admiration of the denomination he adorns. It is not so much as sermons, but rather as essays upon the most immediately and permanently interesting topics of Christian thought, that we value these discourses. While treating the general subject of practical religion, they grapple with the very questions that are now agitating the mind of the religious world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Last Series of Christian Aspects of Faith and Duty: Discourses I have at length yielded to the often-expressed wish of several friends that I would publish another volume of my father's Sermons. The only consideration that has deterred me from doing so hitherto, has been the recollection of his own words, constantly repeated to those who urged him to publish more, that he would have entirely to re-write every Sermon, to put it into, a shape in which he would think fit to offer it to the public. As this cannot be done now, I can but hope that the reader will remember the writer's opinion, and kindly overlook anything in the style or expression that may seem to be more suitable for delivery than for publica tion. Book Faith and Reason

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard Swinburne
  • Publisher : Clarendon Press
  • Release : 2005-09-29
  • ISBN : 0191536288
  • Pages : 287 pages

Download or read book Faith and Reason written by Richard Swinburne and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2005-09-29 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Swinburne presents a new edition of the final volume of his acclaimed trilogy on philosophical theology. Faith and Reason is a self-standing examination of the implications for religious faith of Swinburne's famous arguments about the coherence of theism and the existence of God. By practising a particular religion, a person seeks to achieve some or all of three goals - that he worships and obeys God, gains salvation for himself, and helps others to attain their salvation. But not all religions commend worship, and different religions have different conceptions of salvation. Faced with these differences, Richard Swinburne argues that we should practice that religion which has the best goals and is more probably true than the creeds of other religions. He proposes criteria by which to determine the probabilities of different religious creeds, and he argues that, while requiring total commitment, faith does not demand fully convinced belief. While maintaining the same structure and conclusions as the original classic, this second edition has been substantially rewritten, both in order to relate its ideas more closely to those of classical theologians and philosophers and to respond to more recent views. In particular he discusses, and ultimately rejects, the view of Alvin Plantinga that the 'warrant' of a belief depends on the process which produced it, and John Hick's contention that all religions offer valid paths to salvation.
