Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Apologetics of the Second Century: In Their Relation to Modern Thought The delay in the publication of this little work needs apology; it is due to the illness of the author, and his return to a bookless land. I wish to express my thanks to the Rev. Canon J. R. Wilford, B.D., of College House, Christchurch, without whose help it would have been, hard to overcome the latter difficulty ; also to the Rev. H. C. Money, of Christ Church, Glasgow, who has kindly consented to read the proofs; also to the Rev. J. O. F. Murray, D.D., Master of Selwyn College, Cambridge, and to the Rev. Professor V. II. Stanton, D.D., Regius Professor of Divinity, for kindly and practical sympathy. The book itself docs not in any sense claim to be a learned book; it is only the product of elementary theological training combined with a sympathetic reading of the literature of the period-which is not large. The title, "Apologetics" rather than "Apologists," left it open to treat the subject in a general manner: and it has only been possible to make a few scattered remarks on what is a vast field of knowledge. • Pages : 204 pages

Download or read book Athenagoras written by Leslie William Barnard and published by Editions Beauchesne. This book was released on 1972 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Athenagoras, the late-second-century apologist, was almost unknown in Christian antiquity and has not attracted much attention from modern scholars. This study examines systematically what is known of his life, his works, his background in Greek philosophy and in the Biblical and Christian tradition. His doctrines of God, of the Logos-Son, the Holy Spirit and the Trinity are discussed as is his doctrine of Creation and of man. His knowlege of the Church and liturgy is shown to be more extensive than has beensometimes thought. Finally his strong emphasis on the Christian life and his witness to the moral goodness found among Christians from all classes of society are shown to be convincing proofs of the difference Christianity has made by its coming into the Graeco-Roman world. The author argues that the value of Athenagoras' work lies in his sensitivity to the intellectual currents of his time which he sought to adapt to the service of the Christian faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid a revival of apologetics, “few things could be more useful than an acquaintance with how Christian faith was defended down through the ages,” say the editors in their introduction to this two-part anthology. “Access to both historical and contemporary texts gives us fresh insight into how our fathers in the faith responded to the questions facing them.” Volume 2 in this one-of-a-kind resource takes a sweeping look at apologetics from the Reformation to the present. Readings from twenty-six apologists, including Martin Luther, John Calvin, Blaise Pascal, Jonathan Edwards, Søren Kierkegaard, Francis Schaeffer, Alvin Plantinga, and William Lane Craig are included. With editorial commentary and questions for reflection, Christian Apologetics Past and Present will prove a valuable text for students as well as a unique resource for those interested in defending the faith.

Book Ancient Apologetic Exegesis

Download or read book Ancient Apologetic Exegesis written by Stuart E Parsons and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2015-07-30 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a radical new approach to second-century theology, 'Ancient Apologetic Exegesis' examines the work of Saint Theophilus of Antioch, with a full understanding of the man and his times. The second century is often dismissed by theologians, despite a near-living memory of Jesus and his apostles from only a generation or two prior, but Stuart E. Parsons shows that a distinctive biblical exegesis was used by those second-century apologists who challenged Greco-Roman pagan religionists. Currentliterature misunderstands second-century exegetical approaches, but by looking behind anachronistic views of ancient genre, literacy, and rhetoric, we can rediscover a forgotten form of early Christian exegesis.

Book Defending and Defining the Faith

Download or read book Defending and Defining the Faith written by D.H. Williams and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Early Christian Apologetics, D.H. Williams offers a comprehensive presentation of Christian apologetic literature from the second to the fifth century, considering each writer within the intellectual context of the day. Williams argues that most apologies were not directed at a pagan readership. In most cases, he says, ancient apologetics had a double object: to instruct the Christian and to persuade weak Christians or non-Christians who were sympathetic to Christian claims. Traditionally, scholars of apologetics have focused on the context of persecution in the pre-Constantinian period. By following the links in the intellectual trajectory up though the early fifth century, Williams prompts deeper reflection on the process of Christian self-definition in late antiquity. Taken cumulatively, he finds, apologetic literature was in fact integral to the formation of the Christian identity in the Roman world.
