Book Christ and the Jewish Law Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christ and the Jewish Law Classic Reprint written by Robert Mackintosh and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ and the Jewish Law The importance of our subject is very generally admitted by competent theologians. Holtzmann, in papers frequently referred to below, makes allusion to a late work of Bruno Bauer's, and speaks in that connection of "the high significance, which belongs to Jesus attitude towards the Law, in regard to His dignity as founder of a religion;" and Bassermann, the author of a brief but laborious commentary on Matt. v. 17-20, expresses himself as follows: "All admit the importance of this question," viz., the question how Jesus felt and taught regarding the Mosaic Law, "not only for a right understanding of the life and person of Jesus, but for a right understanding of the whole Christian religion. Rightly," he adds, "does Weisse call it a vital question for framing our conception of the Divine revelation made to us in Christ." Book Christ Our Life in Its Origin Law and End Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christ Our Life in Its Origin Law and End Classic Reprint written by Joseph Angus and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ Our Life in Its Origin, Law, and End In republishing the following work the American Baptist Publication Society has been influenced by several independent considerations. Its peculiar design, so far from giving it a limited local bearing, has given it a peculiarly broad and catholic character, adapted to intelligent minds in every region of the earth, in every condition of culture or of creed. It also imparts a comprehensiveness to its plans, and a freshness of view in its execution. Its general merit is sufficiently attested by the unanimous decision of the Committee - all of them members of the Church of England - after an examination of sixty-four manuscripts. Its Author, Dr. Angus, late Secretary of the Baptist Missionary Society, is now President of Stepney College, London. In the Editorial revision of the work for the American public, very few changes have been required or admitted. The style is distinguished by its clearness and classic beauty. Wherever any difference of judgment of sufficient moment occurred, the Editor has preferred to express it in the Notes. The Editor's Notes arc distinguished from those of the Author by the initials - J. N. B. For general reading, for the aid of the young theological student, for Bible Classes, and for Sabbath School Teachers in particular, this volume will be found a peculiar treasure. Christ, in his various interesting relations, is the centre, the soul, and the glory of the book. It is a book for the whole world - and especially so in these times of expanding knowledge, of commercial and missionary movement, and of almost universal transition to a new and better order of things. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Verily, Verily: The Amens of Christ Proceeding with his illustrations, Jesus shows that the law is tending to fulfilment when an inferior or temporary expression of the Divine will is replaced by a higher expression of it. The injunction to give a writing of divorcement was subordinate to the higher law that forbade the putting away of the wife; and by parity of reason all that was temporary and special in the command ments given to the Israelites had to be superseded by that higher expression of the will of God which Christ came to give. The Jews who flattered themselves that they were righteous because they had not forsworn themselves, were to learn that the use of oaths was itself Offensive to God. A Divine interpreter of the law is come among them, and he shows them that they have constantly misapprehended its scope. The Sermon on the Mount is an inspired commentary on the law, revealing its length and breadth, and showing that nothing less than [absolute perfection is required of those who would be called the children of God. Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father. Who is in heaven is perfect. At a later period we find our Lord varying the words of our text thus: Heaven and earth may pass away; my words shall not pass away. The law passes over into the words of Christ these are the final and complete expression of the Father's will, the new version of the Divine code. The law thus embodied is an essential part of the Gospel. It is only as we know the will of God that we know God; his character expresses itself in his requirements; and if any man turns his back on the law, or gives it the cold shoulder, he is so far turned away from God. A thing this to be considered by many who seem to have little solicitude for the doing of God's will, many to whom the commandments are grievous, and whose Bible is limited to the promises. I never knew you is what the Judge' will say to them; had they known him he would have acknowledged them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Law and the Gospel Gospel of the Blessed God, stated in simplicity and clear ness, in perfect accordance with the instructions of the Holy Scripture, and the Liturgy, Articles, and Homilies of the Protestant Episcopal Church. He humbly trusts that the Glorious Jesus whom he worships as his Lord and his God, -his Great God and Saviour, - will be still pleased to use this work for the manifestation of his glory, the bringing of the vessels of his mercy to an acknowledgment and obedience of the truth, and the guarding of his Church against the vital and dangerous errors which these days have again brought forth, all of which, the author believes, originate in an ignorance, or in confused views, of the relations of the Law and the Gospel to each other and to man. He has also in prepa ration, should his life be spared for their publication, two other works in connection with this; the one under the title of Christ is all, displaying these precious truths in the actual experience of mam - and the other under the title of The good Confession, exhibiting the outward manifestation of their influence and Operation in the Chris tian life. He humbly hopes, and for this end, begs the prayers of Christian friends, that the Glorious King of Zion will graciously accept his efforts in these books to proclaim the truth, to the promotion of his own glory, and the edifying of his Church. And committing his labours to Him, he would adore and glorify God, the Father, the Son, and the Holv Ghost, one Almighty, Gracious God, with thanksgivings and praise, for evermore. Amen. Book The Trial of Jesus Christ

Download or read book The Trial of Jesus Christ written by A. Taylor Innes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trial of Jesus Christ: A Legal Monograph Hence modern Jewish writers have referred to it without hesitation as including the code of criminal law in existence at the date of the high-priestship of Annas and Caiaphas. Of course this cannot be matter of demonstration in the case of all portions of a book which was not finally reduced to writing until centuries had passed. But the evidence shows that the development of the Mishna. In the direction of precaution against legal injustice or negli gence was exceptionally early and strong. Its earliest period coincided with the time of the Men of the Great Synagogue, stretching from the Return from the Captivity to about 220 b.c. Their work has been summed up in the lead ing aphorism of the Pifrké Aroth, which runs, Be cautious and Slow in judgment, send forth many disciples, and make a fence round the lone.1 And this age, which ih culcated caution in judicial action before all other things, was succeeded by the so-called age of the Sanhedrin, which for the next four hundred years worked out that caution in detail. Book Scientific Order and Law as Traced by the Method of Christ and Conceived to Be the Revealed Will of God Classic Reprint

Download or read book Scientific Order and Law as Traced by the Method of Christ and Conceived to Be the Revealed Will of God Classic Reprint written by John Coutts and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Order and Law, as Traced by the Method of Christ and Conceived to Be the Revealed Will of God The assumption that Law is to be conceived as the Will of God is one that religious people ought to be ready to accept without discussion; but sceptics, whilst agreeing that Law exists and can be proved to be in operation by the reason of man, would probably state that, in their opinion, it is an unproved assertion that law is the Will of God. Those who are religious believe in God, and thus it is easy for them to think of His Will as law; to the agnostic thinker the subject does not appear to be so simple; he might be willing to believe, but he demands intellectual proof, and he is not convinced that the proof he requires is to be found. The two classes of thinkers oppose each other; they cannot be brought to agree; they do not see any middle way of reconciliation; there is a dead-lock; and the result is hopeless antagonism. It is to be assumed that both parties are honest, true thinkers; and, being so, it is not to be expected that the position can be changed, unless new light is thrown upon the problems that they have so fully and carefully studied. So far as can be seen, both parties think that their foundations are secure and their superstructures safe; perhaps the admission of a possible doubt as to the foundations might do good; it is not a good sign when seekers after truth consider themselves to be infallible; or shut out from consideration other lines of thought that may be found useful. The series of books that suggest reconsideration of the problems raised by the agnostic theory of Evolution may be said to take this fresh departure; and thus foundation and superstructure are studied from a new standpoint. In the "Tree of Life" the Evolution theory is considered from the aspect of science, man, and revelation, and harmony discerned in the thought of The Seven Principles and the immanence of God in creation. In "Christ's Kingdom," the line of thought is that critics in dealing with the Scriptures fail in their efforts; they have no standard for their labours, and thus the result is anarchy: whilst a different line of study, as suggested by the Beatitudes, will indicate the way by which order may be found. In "The Spirit of Truth as revealed in Law " the thought is developed that throughout the Bible there is an ever-recurring order by which the Spirit reveals Christ as by a system of law, and this is conceived as His eightfold method of thought. Download or read book Wholly for God written by William Law and published by Martino Fine Books. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2012 Reprint of Original 1894 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Many have come to discover the writings of William Law through the publication of selections of his work edited by Andrew Murray. "A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life" (1728) deeply influenced the chief actors in the great Evangelical revival. John and Charles Wesley, George Whitefield, Henry Venn, Thomas Scott, and Thomas Adam all express their deep obligation to the author. "The Serious Call" also affected others deeply. Samuel Johnson, ] Gibbon, Lord Lyttelton and Bishop Home all spoke enthusiastically of its merits; and it is still the only work by which its author is popularly known. It has high merits of style, being lucid and pointed to a degree. Though not the most popular, perhaps the most interesting, original and suggestive of all Law's works are those he wrote in his later years, after he had become an enthusiastic admirer of Jacob Boehme, the Teutonic theosopher. From his earliest years, he had been deeply impressed with the piety, beauty and thoughtfulness of the writings of the Christian mystics. However, it was not till after his accidental meeting with the works of Boehme, about 1734, that pronounced mysticism appeared in his works.
